Something new
I’m doing something sort of new on another site. Yes, I easily betray the fine folk at this here blog!
So Jake of Ye Olde Comick Booke Blogge also works for Atomic Comics here in the Basin of the Sun. He’s been working on putting their blog together, and he asked me to contribute a weekly column. I have to believe it’s because he knows me personally and not because, you know, I’m any good. We were thinking about what to do, and we decided to do what I do with the back issues I find, but subject a random new comic to the same scrutiny. Someone suggested I do this a while back, so here it is!
Every week I’ll link to the column but not tell you which book I’m reviewing. I’m just evil that way. I will, however, give you a clue: I will quote a portion of dialogue or narration from the book and let you try to figure it out. I can have some fun with this, right?
The inaugural one is a bit goofy, as I picked a book none of you (including me) have ever had the guts to buy, but you’ve always been curious about it! But does it work if it’s the first comic you have ever bought? Ah, that’s the rub, ain’t it? Here’s the sample of writing from the book:
“It is very refreshing to be in the company of those who worship you for being the goddess you are.”
Do you dare click on the link? DO YOU DARE?!?!?!?

I read some of the earlier issues.
Wasn’t too impressed.

I happen to read this book every month it is released. Also Jim does not color the books. Holly letters and colors.

Sorry, Bungle – I thought Holly just lettered it. Whoops!

Tarot is pretty much a vehicle for Balent’s two big interest, hot women and wicca/witchcraft. And I can dig that. It’s what I call ‘fantastic crap that is beautifully drawn and every now and then turns out a decent story’. Kind of like Dawn, but without trying so hard to be deep and meaningful. I pick it up every now and then and have a few of the trades…

You….you… JUDAS!!!
…oh, hell, who am I kidding? If I ever got an offer like that I’d lunge at it like a hungry bass. I just don’t know how you and Cronin manage to produce so much. It’s all I can do to get one column out a week. Cronin we know is really some sort of alien AI, but you have a wife and children and stuff. When do you sleep?
Anyway, it was a fun first entry. Trying not to spoil the surprise for those who have yet to click the link, I think the artist in question really is trying to carry on the good-girl-art softcore tradition, or something. I’m pretty sure that’s on purpose. He’s just not nearly as good at drawing that sort of thing or constructing the oops-I’m-NAKED! moments as, say, Howard Chaykin or Alberto Vargas or the other guys that are interested in that particular… um… ‘school’ I guess you’d call it?
Something that doesn’t come up that often is that said artist, as it happens, is a very nice fellow. Of course it has no bearing on a review of the work, but I did want to mention it. Met him a couple of times at shows and he’s always surrounded by women, oddly enough. Maybe all that New Age Wiccan empowerment stuff is enough to placate the ladies who would otherwise be outraged and horrified at his work. Nevertheless, it always makes me chuckle…. I’d think a guy that seems to always have that many females around him would eventually learn how to draw one.

The guys at my comic book store who have met him also say he’s a swell guy, Greg. Apparently living in his mountain stronghold doesn’t screw with his personality too much!
You forget I have no job. I mean, the kids raise themselves, don’t they? I leave food lying around on the ground for them, don’t I? So I have plenty of time for this stuff!

I opened the link in a computer cluster where I currently am and got a few dodgy looks, thank you sir!
Yeah you’re right though, I would never pick that up incase the mother saw it and went into one.
Although I did like the surprise randomness that came with the link, especially since I thought it was something Disney related judging by the quote. I couldn;t have been further from the correct answer if I tried!
