Good luck, Will. They're very hard to find! I'm glad you're enjoying the series. I'll keep writing them as long as I have comics!

Thank you for writing these! I would not have checked out Doom Patrol, and I'm trying to find these comics (not having too much luck, oh well). Keep it up, really good stuff!

^But Flex was on the cover of DP Musclebound

Hmm.... I guess when he said it "might" only mean that that it didn't even mean that much. Or maybe I misremembered and he actually said they wouldn't be able to name him on a cover

Flex Mentallo... best. comic. ever. It eclipses even the mighty Watchmen, for me, but you *do* need to be a hardcore comics nerd to fully love it, I guess.

Reading this comic gave me some kind of bizarre high. Flex Mentallo ate my brain and changed my life. I will forever adore it. It deserves a trade collection.

I really enjoyed reading this piece. Primarily because I've never been able to understand the appeal of the series and it's very interesting to see what someone who does makes of it. For me, it's one of Morrison's least satisfying works and I think the reason is that it's just too meta. Althought it probably doesn't help that I have little knowledge of (or interest in) American comics of the sixties. I'd never even heard of Doom Patrol before Grant started writing it.

Reading this did make me see it as a bit of a "greatest hits" compilation of all Grant's favourite themes but, unlike yourself, I think most of them are handled better elsewhere. That's not to say there aren't things to like - the sequence where the two realities merge is pretty spectacular (if reminiscent of the end of JLA) and "being clever's a fine thing son, but sometime's a boy's just got to get out and meet some girls" is a classic line - just that too much else seems like a reheat of better things.

The astronaut is all a bit Barbelith. The stuff about children and their view of the world is done far better in The Invisibles. The questions of what are reality and identity have been big parts of just about everything he's done and again I prefer the way they're dealt with in The Invisibles and Kill Your Boyfriend respectively.
"A cannonball fires but once. Words can detonate across centuries."

Finally, it usually sells for substantially less on e-bay.co.uk, even allowing for the exchange rate.

Oh, the art is pretty good though.

Charles Atlas's company took DC to court for stealing his origin for Flex Mentallo, but from what I gather, DC actually won the case - but then made some kind of gentleman's agreement.

A few years later a DC bod said that the outcome of all that might just mean that Flex Mentallo can't appear on the cover of any TPBs - and I believe since then they have released Doom Patrol trades featuring the character.

By now I imagine they could release a reprint if they wanted to, but they might have to either bury it in a Doom Patrol TPB or just not mention him or show a picture of him on the cover. I'm sure it's nothing they can't work around. IIRC the story in teh Flex Mentallo miniseries is actually called After the Fact.

The big legal issue was between DC and Charles Atlas. DC may have had some problems with Morrison, but I didn't find anything about it in my very brief Google search about the lawsuit.

I remember a legal problem between DC and Morrisson that made this series never being collected.

Am i right or my memory is playing tricks on me?

Yup, Morrison's DP is the greatest long-form story in comics history. I've been saying that for years. Followed by Nexus 1-55 (plus the magazines and Next Nexus mini).

"As for Doom Patrol being the “greatest long-form story in comics history,” wtf are you smoking?"

Apparently the same thing I am, because I totally agree with that. Amazing run of comics.

I still have my Flex issues and I remember just being blown away when I first read them back when they came out. I'm also holding out hope that if reprinted Flex's DP issues, then they'll eventually get to the Flex mini-series (not to mention the last DP trade to collect #58-63 and the Doom Force special).

I'll read it when they reprint it, which will likely be sometime soon. Hell, they collected Sebastien O, and DC is finally getting on the old Hellblazer trades, so I'm not worried. They just like to space out what they reprint, and Morrison is always a draw outside of the direct sales market.

I remember this series when it first came out.
It was my first look at Quitely.

I do so wish that Morrison and Case would do another 45 issue run of Doom Patrol. The first run made Morrison's run on X-men and JLA look like child's play by comparison.

I love Flex Mentallo. Only the first two issues made it to the newsagent distribution in this country so I had to search all over the place for the other two issues - but I managed it without paying extra for them!

Mental series which I didn't fully understand, but somehow it doesn't really matter. It's also some of Frank Quitely's best work

"Prepare to become fictional."

That may be the best single line in comics history.
