See, I knew Flash would suck.

Also: I don't have to shut up. Hurrah for Spidey/FF!

Yeah, the last story in The Spirit is a clearly a parody of Frank Miller's style, which is an appropriate thing to do with Miller slated to direct the movie adaptation -- and grim 'n gritty it up, according to interviews.

There's some pretty funny lines of dialogue in it, really, although the Palmiotti story was definitely the strongest.

Rebis: The silent pages were fine. I didn't have a problem with them. I meant the manner in which Bart died, and the reasoning behind it. That's why I wrote that it was "hollow."

Ahhh, well. Hindsight is always 20/20, isn't it? (Well, most days.) As one of the people who recommended "The Flash" ... well ... what can we say? Would you laugh at me if I told you that I actually didn't think they'd kill Bart? Because, really, I didn't. And the three issues preceding it (the only ones I got of this run, since that craptacular OYL #1 reboot) were really good. And, honestly Greg, I do think that, given the greated DC editorial directive to kill poor Bart, Guggenheim did a fine job. I don't think those silent pages of some of his loved ones finding out the news were "absolutely hollow" at all; in four issues, Guggenheim made me care about and empathize with Bart, a character I was previously indifferent too. So there's that.

But do I agree overall about how depressing it is to watch the big publishers advance this bizarre agenda of "let's keep killing characters!"? Yes I do.

But, look, Greg! Here's hope on the horizon! You love Catwoman (so do I and about 53 other valiant readers) and now, after many months, your consistent championing of the title is paying off! People want to buy it! Hey hey, word of mouth! Woo-hoo! I agree that the One Year Later jump is a great point at which to start. (Although the Boris-and-Natasha revenge story that just wrapped up makes me want to go back and find the pre-OYL issues where she first took them down. I think it also involved Angle Man and a few other villains whom she double-crossed?) Anyway, I'm pretty sure DC put out a trade of the earliest OYL issues, so you could start with that, and move forward from that point. Good stuff with the Film Freak, Holly taking over the Catwoman role, and the paternity of Selina's kid. Oh, and the recent arc about Calculator getting Catwoman to steal one of Luthor's possessions was also really great. I love this comic.

FGJ: That's a good point about the Wasteland trade. The early issues are intriguing, but it takes a while for Johnston to build up steam. Each issue is better than the last, which is not a bad way to grow a book.

Oh, and I officially will not give you crap about Moon Knight because you're not trying to defend it anymore--I will, however, give the book some crap about noticing the sales plummet when they weren't bannering it as a tie-in to something and slapping a great big 'The Initiative' banner across the top when it was minimally connected.

But I don't care, because my primary buying for the book is done and I don't have to buy everything Marvel and DC are producing!!!!!!!!!!!!! So long, 'Countdown'! Bye-bye, 'Endangered Species'! Kiss off, 'World War Hulk!' 'Annihilation: Conquest'...I actually really liked this. I might keep up with it just for fun. (Oh, and my crazy prediction is that we're meant to think the voice Quasar is hearing is Epoch, the patron of the various Protectors of the Universe, but in a big twist, it'll be Wendell Vaughn.)

I got the Wasteland trade.

I wasn't as thrilled with it as I'd thought I would be (damn preconceived expectations), and it sure could have used some text pieces at the back (damn your love of single issue readers Johnston!), but I'll be back for more.
It's got enough to make me think it's going to great, a courtesy I haven't been able to extend to too many 'Big Two' books recently.
(Man am I glad I didn't keep going with Checkmate. Otherwise I'd have to read about a crossover with a team I hate, hate, hate, despite only having encountered them once before in an other crossover. Just drrop the book Greg - you may think you enjoy it, but it hurts your soul. Just re-read Queen & Country, Paul Crocker is so much more fun and evil than The Wall).

Bryan and Frank: Well, Pfeifer started writing the book on #44, but the early issues are kind of uneven. They do feature nice Pete Woods art, though. The book really started getting good with #53, which is the beginning of One Year Later. Pfeifer really did well with the jump, and the few issues right after that are quite good, and they have been since then.

Sean: It gets its own review, because it's so bad!

...If you’re one of those whiners who claims to love old-time superheroics ...

*raises hand*

I certainly am, and I was first in line for Spider-Man/Fantastic Four. It is simply great fun. Which, by the way, is what we whiners liked so much about old-time superheroics.

That and, you know, um... knowing who was in the book. Wikipedia? Jesus H. Christ.

All right, I'll take the challenge: I'm gonna go to a comic book show this weekend; what issues of "Catwoman" should I keep my eye out for in Pfeifer's run?

THe thing about Meltzer is, Doctor Light aside, he's an excellent supervillain writer. Check out any of the non-Light villain material in Identity Crisis and in his first arc of JLA.

Give the guy a revived Secret Society of Super-Villains comic for the fans, let him go nuts, and keep him away from megaplotlines. And then transport me to that other Earth where he's not a famous novelist and DC wouldn't rather have him do shock crap stories and crossovers instead of SSOSV.

But Greg... the minutes that it took you to read the Flash. The time that I've cost you.

And the intelligence points, after reading something so pointless and inane. The BRAINPOWER...

I'm right there with you on the Spirit. Kind of enjoy the first part, really liked the second, and couldn't tell what was going on in the third. Ah well, at least they did get decent talent to fill in, which gives me hope that DC will keep it going for a while as their high art book to replace Solo. I said give Palmioti and Bernet the whole issue the next time Cooke needs a break.

I've been enjoying the Warhammer 40k, and thought the new one was decent, but then again, I am a fan of the table-top game, and I gave the same gaurded recommendation that it's for fans of the game.

I discovered the reason I disliked the JLA/JSA crossover: There was no antagonist. Plus it was basically five issues of prologue for Countdown.

And yes, Wasteland was especially good this week.
