Speaking as a Midwesterner (North Dakota), I can say that a lot of kids around here still go to summer camp. I never did, but a lot of my friends went every year.

This story does not have to be awful.

Oh, I agree the execution could've been improved some (the chicken-clucking thing is henious) but the basic outlines are entirely typical of the genre. Sadly, yes, the traditional story does involve the smitten girl acting like a complete moron right up until the 'bad boy' does something either illegal or life-threatening.

This is why I love this blog. Screw Countdown and World War Hulk and all that-- we've got Archie Comics to review!

Keep being awesome, Mr. Cronin.

But PLENTY of Archie's group of writers could tell this story well.

Dan Parent, Kathleen Webb, Barbara Slate, Craig Boldman.

This story does not have to be awful.

If anyone's interested in the new-look Riverdale gang (except, weirdly enough, Mr.Weatherbee) here are samples from scans_daily:

http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/3644990.html

I agree that the guys turned out well, or at least more imaginatively, than the girls. The only big flaw in the Archie redesign is that - as the SD gang points out - in Riverdale 'freckles' apparently = 'nasty skin condition'.

As for the story...yes, well, don't want to say I told you so, but...:) Seriously, the Archie comics just don't do the kind of wha-oh! whacky! cutting-edge innovation changing that story up would require.

One problem with the token minority characters in the Archie stories is that they remain just that. They have no real strong, distinguishing personalities-- not even archetypical ones. They're all just "nice" people who fit in and have an eccentric hobby. The creators are afraid to give them any kind of negative personality traits, for fear of reproach.

The strongest characters in Riverdale are those that have negative personality traits-- Reggie is an egotist and a jerk, Moose is a big dumb jock. If Raj Patel had a Reggie-style personality, it would make a lot of people angry, i.e.: "why is the Indian guy the villain?"

If Jughead Jones was black instead of white, there would be so much flak-- really, Jughead is a white Steppen Fetchit: lazy, shiftless, always eating. And let's be thankful Dilton isn't the Asian kid!

I'm not saying that I want to see a black character with those kind of personality traits-- but that in trying to be "diverse" and "with-it" without offending anyone, the end result is bland characterizations-- just another token minority character, which is, in its own way, just as offensive.

Yeah, I was gonna say, "The Indian kid is into filmmaking? Does he do inappropriate production numbers?"

Also, do kids really still go to summer camp? I thought that was one of those things that fell out of vogue that's still perpetrated by "family" entertainment produced by out-of-touch Boomers.

So his parents are a doctor and a scientist, and his hobby is filmmaking? That seems kind of stereotyped.
