Snark Free Corner for 7/2

Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!

Enjoy!

GREAT FIRST APPEARANCES

Marvel Superheroes was an interesting concept for a comic book. One new story plus two classic reprints.

Sounds like the successful Archie digest format, doesn't it?

In any event, #18 is the first appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and it is a good comic.

Of course, you wouldn't know it by the cover, for while Gene Colan's interior art is quite good, his designs could use a little work. I think every single character looks ridiculous (and it comes as no surprise that all but one of the characters went through SIGNIFICANT redesign work in future appearances).

In any event, except for the designs, every other aspect of the comic is awesome.

If a comic writer ever needed a primer on how to create an entirely new hero concept in an entirely new comic universe all in ONE issue - this story by Arnold Drake is the one.

The basic concept is this, an evil alien race named the Badoon is conquering the Milky Way Galaxy in the 31th Century.

Teaming up to stop them is a man from Jupiter, a man from Pluto, a man from Centauri IV and an Earthman born 1000 years ago.

If that's not a super cool sounding team, then I don't know what IS.

Meanwhile, Drake must have been reading some science articles recently, because he tried to work in extra little science-based riffs. Like Charlie-27's body, like all people from Jupiter, has become massive due to the atmosphere of Jupiter.

Likewise, Martinex, the man from Pluto, also has undergone body changes like the rest of his people (and I just LOVE the way that Drake doesn't just say "he shoots fire out of one hand and ice out of the other," but instead tries to give a detailed scientific reason for WHY it works like that, which is actually pretty funny).

Vance Astro was placed into cyrogenic stasis to go on an interstellar flight. When he arrived at his destination 1000 years later, he was greeted by other Earth people, as someone had discovered a quicker way of space travel 800 years earlier!

How trippy is that?!?

Yondu is a member of the species found on the planet Astro landed on. When his people were slaughtered by the Badooon, he went with Astro to Earth, which is where all four men met up together and decided to band together.

What a cool concept.

What great art (except for the costumes).

And Drake also throws in great little touches, like the simmering racial prejudice between the people from the different planet colonies (apparantly Jupiter-folk don't like Pluto-folk) and the weird relationship between Vance and Yondu. Also, Drake uses cool science-fiction terms like "radio-jump," "space-migration" and "space-militia."

This was great as it was not just a great SETUP issue, but a good issue period.

And then the reprints are just BONUS (which is good, as they were not particularly good)!!

Very cool comic.

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn't something obvious like "They all have prices!" "They all have logos!" "They all feature a man!" etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

SNARK FREE CHALLENGE

If all the original Challengers of the Unknown got into a fight, who would win it?

THE COVER GAME

This week's game is as follows...

Find me a cover featuring the original Challengers of the Unknown (Ace Morgan; Professor Haley; Red Ryan; Rocky Davis).

Sounds simple enough?

But here's the catch - the comic must have been published after 1982 (or, in other words, published within the last 25 years).

For example (and you can't use this one!), this Adventures of Superman cover...

And remember, only one cover per commenter!

Good luck!

WHO IS IT?

Remember, tell me who it is and what number clue gave it away!

Nikki of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Mercury was the giveaway, but she was actually the first female to come to mind since you mentioned the Guardians.

Vance Astro has to be the coolest superhero name ever.

Another little bit of awesome--that wasn't the first appearance of the Badoon. They actually showed up in Silver Surfer (Volume 1), as an absolutely terrifying race of alien conquerors who were going to enslave the human race without breaking a sweat. Their cloaking devices meant the entire Badoon armada could hover right overhead and we wouldn't even know until they started bombarding us. They were, in every way, bad dudes.

Except that the Surfer could see through their cloaking devices, and put paid to the armada and the invasion. They went flying off, swearing grim revenge against the Earth, even if it took them centuries...

And in 'Guardians of the Galaxy', we see them in the midst of enacting that revenge, centuries later. Neat, huh?

Nikki on clue 2, but I was primed by the discussion of The Guardians of the Galaxy.

I have a greater love for the Guardians of the Galaxy than anything in comics I think.

It's really the one property that I'd be ok with if they just rebooted and streamlined it. Because the base idea is just that good.

There's no real reason not to, no matter how much as I dig the idea of a 1000 year old Simon Williams running around with a beard and calling himself Hollywood.

Cover challenge - well, two of those issues tell the story of someone turning to vigilantism after the murder of a loved one, and finding and punishing the murderer. Not sure if or how the Challangers issue would fit that theme, though!

All three covers are totally awesome.

I'm going to guess that all three comics feature an execution scene.

Kirby drew this awesome DC Comics Presents cover featuring the original Chals.

there are some covers that have the challs in the corner with 3,949,282 other people, but i'm going to take the easy road:

http://challengersoftheunknown.com/COTUV201.jpg

Covers: All 3 stories are told as flashbacks?

Cover theme game: All three have a doctor on them. Doc Samson, Prof. Haley, and Dr. Thomas Wayne (Batman's dad). I know, I know, it's semantics, but a professor is a doctor, ya know...

Too much of a stretch?

Who would win in a Challengers fight? Rocky of course! The man took on a giant ape and kicked its ass. Although Ace would be the last to fall.

I wanted to say Doctors, but sterg said it already.

in the 31th Century

Oddly enough, I'm coming up on my 31th birthday.

Prof.

He'd destroy them all with science!

SCIENCE!

Brian, that' so weird, I was thinking of that issue of the Hulk with Crazy Eights this weekend. I totally remembered the cover but forgot about the warning that the Hulk didn't appear in the issue. I must have been 12 when I bought it but it was a great story especially the part about how she wanted her name to be Infinity or something like that.

Challengers of the Unknown (v2) #7 (of 8)

Cover challenge: It's obvious! The Hulk does not appear in any of those comics!

I don't think the Hulk has ever been in Cliff Clavin's kitchen, either...

Here's a Challengers cover that barely makes the deadline: Adventure Comics (Digest) #493 from late 1982.

Cover challenge: It’s obvious! The Hulk does not appear in any of those comics!

Nope. He's that old lady on the Batman cover in disquise. You can tell from her dialog. "WHY MUST PUNY HUMANS HOUND MISS BEATRICE! MISS BEATRICE HATES PUNY HUMANS, AND MISS BEATRICE WILL SMASH! Then Miss Beatrice will go have a nice cup of metamucil and watch Matlock."

That can't be Hulk!

Hulk's love for matlock can never be stated aloud or all universes everywhere are destroyed, as learned in defenders 16!

Cover Theme: each has a Leslie on the cover.
Leslie Thompkins, Leslie Ann Shappe (Crazy Eight), Leslie "Rocky" Davis
