Help me buy my comics this week!
- by Greg Burgas

Plus: a challenge for you, the fine readers!
Okay, so this week comics will be delayed in the United States (the only country that matters, if you really think about it) a day by Independence Day, so I will be heading to the store on Thursday. So here's the shipping list, and here's my shopping list:
All Star Superman #8
Detective #834
Faker #1
Outsiders #49
Silverfish HC
Welcome to Tranquility #8
Dynamo 5 #5
Invincible vol. 8
Ant-Man #10
Uncanny X-Men #488
Black Diamond #2 (which I just received in the mail, so I'll review it before Thursday to give you an idea about it)
Empty Chamber #2 (boy, I hope this comes out)
Chronicles of Wormwood #5
Into the Dust #1
So peruse the list and hit me with your recommendations! As usual, there are some things I'm not getting because I either already own it in singles or I'm waiting for the trade. I would recommend the Batman Ego thing, if only for Selina's Big Score, which is excellent. I buy Y: The Last Man in trades, so don't recommend that. I already have the Union Jack comic, but the trade is definitely worth it. Gage is quite the hot writer these days, it seems. I also recommend The Damned in trade - it's a good book.
And then there's my challenge to you, the reader. Robert over at Ye Olde Comick Booke Blogge has been doing some interesting posts about "independent" comics because it's Independence Day on the Fourth (which he has dubbed "Independents' Day"). He attempts to define "independent comics" here, and his "manifesto" is here. He and Jake also list some of their favorite comics that fall outside the "mainstream." Robert, by the way, is the guy who works at my comic book shoppe whose balls I'm often busting in my weekly posts, but he's a very cool guy, and he makes some good points, especially with regard to the guy who was complaining that there aren't any good comics anymore. Poppycock! So my challenge to you is simple: This week, pick up a comic you've never read before. The only other criterion: it can't be a property owned by Marvel or DC. That doesn't mean it can't be published by them, but it can't be owned by them (yes, there'sa distinction). That means no big-time superheroes. Most of the readers of this here blog have a very eclectic reading list, which is most excellent, but there's always room for another comic in your life, right?
So give me your recommendation, and tell me what you're going to buy that is outside your comfort zone. And always remember: there are plenty of excellent comics that don't feature speedy superheroes getting kicked to death!

You totally have to pick up Tales from the Clit. I hear it's a literary masterpiece.
In seriousness, oh, I dunno... Pirates vs. Ninjas? Nothing's leaping out at me.

The only country that matters because you're american and only read american stuff, therefore, there's no point in knowing the status on other countries, or because you think only american comics actually matter?
Hopefully, the first one, since I've only began enjoying this great site, and I'd be bummed to have to stop just because of this comment.
Keep up the good work.

Lucas, Lucas, Lucas. There is a third possibility: I'm absolutely joking. And you didn't suggest anything! Boo!

Union Jack: London Falling
Great mini with great art. Also features Union Jack (SPOILER[but not really because it happens on the first page or so])finally killing the last vampire in England. Took him bloody long enough.

I don't care if it's vapid, overexposed, and the last issue of a mini-series. It involves Bruce Campbell!
Army of Darkness vs Marvel Zombies #5.
If having Ash disembowel the MU is wrong, than I don't wanna be write.
@Lucas:
Calm down.
@Bill Reed:
Am I tastless enough to make a reference to the Clit Commander? Yes, yes I am.

It's not only a literary masterpiece, but a cliterary masterpiece.
Sorry for not thinking of that pun earlier. But it needed to be said.
I hear the center spread is a labial fold-out.
(I will stop now.)

I'm going to suggest All-New Atom. It's a very fun, quirky book. Not very similar to Irredeemable Ant-Man, but just as good. This is a pretty easy issue to jump in on, too, as the new Atom begins his journey to find Ray Palmer, the old Atom.
As for a book outside my comfort zone, I dunno. I guess I'll choose when I get there. If I do it at all (and since my list is already pretty big this week, I may not).

There's always the Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born # 6 or
Ultimate Power # 6.
Go figure.

That list of independent comics from the guy at your shop...
I'm almost awed.
That is by far the worst list of it's kind that has ever been. Almost certainly the worst list of it's kind that ever will be. It is to shitty list-making what Beethoven's fifth is to music. The absolute apex of the art-form.
I wonder if he knows that there are independent comics that aren't produced by huge corporations? You figure that if you work at a comic shop for a while someone would tell you that, or you'd kind of figure it out on your own.
But I shouldn't judge. It's possible there's a law banning good comics in Phoenix. (I wouldn't put it past them.)
Alright, I'm exaggerating. But half his list is freaking DC comics. There really are more indepented and more better comics than Ex Machina out there.
And I guess I could read his manifesto before commenting on his (really very poor) taste.
But I'm 99% sure that it will just fill me with aggravation and distemper.

This week is huge. I dont think I'm going to have enough money to go "outside my comfort zone", though I might pick up Faker...does that count?
Anyway, I'm getting: Atom, Uncanny X-men, Countdown (I'm stupid), Dynamo 5, Action, Detective, Black Canary (I cant say no to my favorite character...unless she's written by Winnick), American Virgin, Jonah Hex, Tranquility, and Y the last man.
I think it's time to start dropping stuff again.
Anyway get THE ATOM, get THE ATOM, get THE ATOM I cannot say that enough, it is amazing. And if not that, either Jonah Hex or American Virgin, two more amazing books.

Our tastes appear to differ quite a bit but based on the first issue I would recommend New Warriors #2.
Oh, and I think Thor is worth a shot from what I've seen.

Since it's the US independence day (wow, that reminds me a really crappy movie), I won't be recommending you a foreign comic.
USAGI YOJIMBO VOL 21 is the best of the bunch. As is the series, since we are at that. Smartly written samurai comic with an anthropomorphical animal cast (don't let this fool you, the series is VERY sophisticated!).
If you can't find anything besides Marvel and DC in your shop, you could do much worse than buy the Jeff Parker godness that is MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE. A reprint series with two Jeff Parker books under a single cover! Fun for the whole family!
Best,
Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

Is the Rex Libris TP coming out? I saw it on the Savage Critic's shipping list but don't see it on diamonds.
Clearly (if it is actually in the stores) it's the only purchase that you need to make this week. Check it out if you haven't already, or burn in hell, your choice.
ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN #1 left me sorta interested but that may have been because it was free. So #2 is a sorta, maybe, depends if I buy lunch or go hungry.
Other than that? Faker and Silverfish you already plan on buying and I think you said you were buying Scalped in trades, so look out for Rex Libris or suffer the wrath of the world's mightiest librarian.

New Avengers / Transformers!!
Will it suck? Probably.
Will it also rule? ABSOLUTELY!

I agree with everyone recommending Atom. That, Blue Beetle and Brave & Bold are the three best DCU titles by far at the moment.
But for something different, try Following Cerebus. It's truly unique - equal parts the best general-interest magazine with a comics focus you can imagine and forum for Dave Sim's deeply disturbed worldview, and you never know which is going to dominate the issue. But it's never less than interesting.

Of the books I'm getting, I'd recommend trying out Thor. It's Olivier Coipel's first work in what seems like eons and from interviews I've read, JMS has done a ton of research for it.
I can't give a shout out to the other books as they are either ending (Fallen Son) or mid-story (Ultimate Power, but take a gander at the Greg Land cheesecake cover which will probably drive all the females out of the store in disgust).

MarkAndrew: He does get quite a bit of far more independent stuff than that, but his list was basically designed to lure hard-core superhero people away from regular superhero stuff. Crawl before you walk, that sort of thing. I agree, his list isn't great, but it's certainly a start.
And Stuart, I'm way ahead of you. I buy Rex Libris in single issues. I know the trade is supposed to come out soon, but if it's not on Diamond's list, it's probably not showing up this week. Of course, that's only a "probably," because it might slip in there!
Hmmm ... I bought the first trade of the Atom and was unimpressed. It was okay, but nothing to make me want to snap up the rest. Maybe I'll have to give it another try. We shall see.

Greg, as I mentioned on the message board, I got drunk the other night and ended up spending a small fortune on comics, mostly independent.
So I'm excusing myself from the challenge (and looking forward to spending spending saturday or sunday afternoon reading Exit Wounds. I'd have started already, but the interior art and the beautiful packaging have me convinced that it should be given special treatment and read in one sitting, with no other distractions.
That said Three Strikes had me so hooked from just reading on the bus/train that I finished it standing up in a corner whilst my girlfriend finished cleaning up at her work, but I get the feeling the two books are different beasts.)
In the spirit of independence, I recommend picking up the trade for either: Supermarket, Conan (from Dark Horse, volume 1 or 3 were the best), something from Andi Watson, or Nowheresville by Mark Ricketts and published by Image (http://www.handbuzzer.lurid.com/nowheresville/index.html),
you'll love it - Tales Of Ordinary Madness meets Altmans Long Goodbye.

ATOM! ATOM!! ATOM!!! (Can't believe you haven't been reading Atom.)
Otherwise, get Black Canary #1, which, unfortunately, is NOT being written by Gail Simone, but Tony Bedard isn't a bad writer.
Joss Whedon's Runaways #27. Should be a good read as were his last two issues. Much faster with the pacing than he is on Astonishing, Whedon has been doing interesting things with the kids.
Finally, as Y The Last Man comes to a close, shouldn't you be there for the final few issues? It's been a great ride til now, and the ending will hopefully be worth it.

I can see that. Those are the books that most superhero fans read for Indy Cred.
And I guess I agree with them in theory, since I'm not regularly buying any Marvel or DC comics. (ALthough I did buy an issue of Scooby Doo 'cause it had a Pirate Cover.)
But, by and large his list strikes me as (A) not independent and, barring Lone Ranger and Mouse Guard (which I haven't read) and Astro City (which I really like) ....
not substantially better written than your average Superman or Spider-man comics.
Also: The other dude calls Daredevil an independent comic. D-A-R-E-D-E-V-I-L.

Outside my comfort zone? Maybe I'll buy X-Men or something then.
Am I too late to suggest 2000AD? Thought so.
