I missed Gen13 when it first came out, but from what I’ve heard it sort of sounds like Banzai Girls from your description. So what I want to know is what made Gen13 so polpular when this comic isn’t liked by anyone? Is it because it was so over the top while this is just exploitive?

Gen13 wasn't as exploitive as Banzai Girls, and it actually had plot, stories and characters.
Nothing brilliant mind you, but for the target audience of teenage boys, it was enough.
It was also funny, and better drawn.

Ellis doesn't seem to like Penance much himself, judging by the "broken toy in a world he was never made for" line in the most recent Thunderbolts. Sadly, it's a pretty accurate assessment of what happened when Marvel insisted on attaching a goofy character like Speedball to yet another "angst, death, 'n' mutilation" saga.

The new villain in X-FACTOR, The Isolationist, appeared in one panel - in shadow - in Peter David's last issue of his original run on the book baack in the '90s (# 88, I think). He was on Genosha talking about genocide with one of the country's genegenieers. So this is him tying up a long-forgotten loose-end.

That's fine, sir. Humor is a tough thing to really express without some context, so I figured the jokes should just speak for themselves. I was just pointing out some of the things that annoyed me about it. I SHOULD have been a bit more positive, you're right.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but since you started the review with "not bad" and then went on to detail everything you didn't like on it, it hadn't sound like you had enjoyed it that much.

I mean, you didn't give even a passing, non-spoilerish mention of P-Cat or the Origami martial arts battle, which I thought were the best thing on the book. Your comment here was a far more positive review of that book than the original!

I didn't mean to be harsh, just got a bit depressed that a book I saw as a breath of fresh air at Marvel among the sea of angst-filled "event" books appeared to have been heavily criticized over a couple of nits.

But, again, I apologize for my faulty judgement.

Best,
Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

You're weird, Pedro. First of all, I can easily get a lot of non Marvel/DC stuff, just not some of the bigger collections, like the Uncle Scrooge stuff, which I still haven't seen around. My store carries plenty of smaller publishers, but they don't order some stuff unless the customer wants it. They carry most of Dark Horse and Image, and some of the smaller stuff.

As for the Deadpool/GLI thing - where did you get the impression that I didn't think it was funny? I thought it was very funny, but I was just pointing out one small joke I didn't like. The entire Penance thing was hilarious (including P-Cat), but I was just wondering why Marvel allowed it. There were a few jokes that didn't work for me (the continuity thing, and I hate fart jokes), but like I said, for the most part, it worked for me. I would say that the 3 out of 4 ratio I wrote about is about where it falls for me. If you're doing a slapstick comic and I like 75% of the jokes, that's pretty darned good.

I'm sad that I don't get humor. That must be why I love dark and disturbing comics like She-Hulk, Scurvy Dogs, The Middleman, and the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League. I hope you keep recommending funny stuff, though! Man, I don't get ONE JOKE in X-Factor and suddenly I have no sense of humor. That's harsh, sir!

It gets increasingly difficult to recommend new comics to you Greg. First you are unable to buy many things out of the regular Marvel/DC output dut to your comic shop policies. That's understandable. But now it seems that you definitely can't "get" the humor stuff, judging by your reaction to Deadpool/GLI and X-Factor.

You won't see me recommending the Nth way-too-serious-fot-its-own-good super-hero book, man. Not at all! I'll get back to the occasional european book in the hopes that you someday are able to buy it.

>Chip - yeah, I got issue #1 yesterday, when I picked up #3. Issue #1 was very >good, but I figured it was a little late in the game to review it.
>It’s not that I didn’t like #3, it’s just that I thought it could have been handled in >fewer pages. I’m sure it will fit in well with the rest of the series, but maybe I >was spoiled by the action in the first two issues. Either way, I’m on board!

That's cool man. I was just giving you a hard time. I'm glad you are on board. The action comes back in a big way with issue 4 and 5. Just you wait.

I asked about issue 1 - not cause I was trying to get a review - I just wanted to make sure you got one. I give out pdfs to reviewers I "know." Drop me an email and I will get you one for issue 4.

Honestly, I thought Spawn #169 was one of the weakest issues Hine has written since coming on board, but that might partially be because I stopped reading the series around issue #25 and only started again once Hine took over and thus had no idea who any of the characters in it were aside from Spawn.

I do have to say, if you're looking to get a feel for Hine's run, the previous 3-issue arc featuring the Violator was a lot better, but even it still felt weirdly anticlimactic in the end.

And as for the dissing of Penance….Fabian made Speedball into the character that was loved and then raped by Warren Ellis, and he was fired off Thunderbolts so Ellis could rape more of his characters….

That it wasn't Ellis who created Penance has been pointed out, but please don't let that get in the way of your critiques. I never tire of hearing "rape" used as a verb to describe a comic book story someone didn't like.

BANZAI GIRLS strikes me as the sort of concept and approach that's wasted on a non-adult title. If you're gonna release spank material, why be coy about it?

Chip - yeah, I got issue #1 yesterday, when I picked up #3. Issue #1 was very good, but I figured it was a little late in the game to review it.

It's not that I didn't like #3, it's just that I thought it could have been handled in fewer pages. I'm sure it will fit in well with the rest of the series, but maybe I was spoiled by the action in the first two issues. Either way, I'm on board!

Matt: The Middleman is a comedic espionage comic. The title character works for a shadowy department of the government who takes care of the weird stuff. He recruits a young woman as his partner, and she gets to comment on the absurdity of it all. It's extremely funny and very exciting, and features cool art by Les McClaine. The two mini-series have been released in trades, and a third trade (skipping the mini) has been solicited and should be out later in the summer. It's a hoot.

I like issue 3 of Left On Mission. It add depth to characters. I can feel the stress that Eric is under.
