Whoa! I never realised the troubles in Ireland had such a simple explanation! There's a lot of story in this for one issue, so I'm not surprised the plot resorts to Deus Ex Machina in places. Great detective work to suss out the creators.

Cheers

Well, that's the thing. Plenty of people make fun of that style of dress now. I'll never understand people who dress in a way that's "trendy", but ugly.

Just wait. In twenty years, everyone will be making fun of the clothes people are wearing now. "Can you believe that people wore pants that hung down so low that their shorts were showing?"

Oh... almost forgot...

that shirt he's wearing there...?

Yeah... I had one like that too.

A little "V" cut into the neck and that was your collar.

Materials varies of course, depending on the season, but spring and summer clothes were a material that was was some weird nylon/poly blend and looked, folded and felt like nothing else.

Light but voluminous.

Don't get me started on the day-glo and pastel colors that were in then.

That was hard for me to go through, being a fan of darker shades, myself.

:-)

Apodaca,

Actually, I think I had a jacket that looked a LOT like that back then.

The jackets ended right at the waist.

1980's clothing (well, heck almost EVERYTHING in the 80's) was inspired by the 1940's style a bit.

A famous joke is that the 80's were like the 40's, but with cocaine (I however, did not partake of any, BTW).

Oh, and the collar isn't designed any differently than most collars today.

We just wore them "up".

I kinda miss wearing my collars up.
Ah...the 80's... good times.

;-)

I liked this issue.

The origin of the ROse was a highlight of Web.
Probably the best issue they did--other than the Kraven's Last Hunt--but that spanned all 3 Spidey titles at the time.

No way, man. Aside from her spandex pants, those are imaginary comic book clothes. The jackets don't look like any kind of material I've ever seen used for clothing, Peter's shirt has a Batman Beyond-esque collar, or lack thereof, and I think his jacket is tucked into his pants.

Dan Apodaca: They are wearing '80s clothes.

Dan Larkin: I believe she was laid off during DeFalco's second run on Amazing. After Onslaught trashed the Bugle building, Jonah had to make a lot of cutbacks.

Ah, Roxxon. They even have their own on-staff supervillain to beat up pesky heroes snooping around. Anyone else remember Sunturion?

I have to say, the portrayal of things in Northern Ireland sounds pretty lame. Rather than address the real conflict, they just created a random terrorist group with ties to the British government. I can't help but wonder if the original story had it straight up IRA vs. Orangemen, and they had to change it to avoid controversy. (That would explain the dual writing credit, as well as the second writer being Shooter.)

You know, I've been reading Marvel for almost 20 years now, and it wasn't until Brubaker's Cap that I first saw the name Roxxon. I went to the OHOTMU Appendix and I was absolutely floored that Roxxon's had like a hundred appearances/mentions since '75, all scattered throughout a host of Marvel titles. Somehow, I managed to avoid every single random comic manifestation of the Roxxon behemoth. How is that even possible? A statistician's nightmare! Anyone else run into something like this, a character or concept you think is relatively new and turns out to be omnipresent everywhere you aren't?

I think that this is the first issue you've reviewed here that I bought when it first came out. (#15 was my first issue).

That list of credits you linked to is enormously sad. Apart from a seven issue run by David Michelinie (14-20), Web of Spider-Man didn't hold onto a regular writer for longer than five issues until issue #50. The same is true for most of the artists, and running down the list I notice Vince Colletta's name showing up quite a bit.

From my entire run of the book, I remember the introduction of Humbug, the origin of the Rose, and editor Jim Salicrup appearing as a lingerie photographer in the Cult of Love storyline. That's it.

And meanwhile, Ultimate Power has managed to pack a full issue's worth of plot into just six issues of traced art! I'm glad comics are so much better than they used to be.

The thing that gets me is how much seems to happen in this one issue. This would be a six issue arc in Amazing these days.
