Now THAT'S a Teaser Poster
- by Brian Cronin
- in General
DC flopped with their first two teaser posters for Countdown, but they've now released the teaser poster for Final Crisis, and they went to the man, JG Jones, to make it happen - and it works really well.
It's amazing to me what you can do with computer coloring nowadays. Look at the image - then look at the image from a couple of feet back - it looks like they're all in silhouette, doesn't it?
Very cool.
Great job by Jones.

I mostly like it. The Big Three look good, and suitably dramatic, and really stand out against the background.
My biggest complaint, though, is that Hal Jordan looks like a tiny paraplegic.

Why is Wonder Woman wearing heels again? George Perez got her (and us, I thought) over that impracticality 20 years ago.

It's a shame DC wastes J.G. Jones on advertisements for things that will suck.

Here's the thing, I like the composition of the characters, but when you mix it with the backgrounds...
"Look, everyone, the very heavens are tearing themselves apart...uh...right behind us! What shall we do?"
"POSE OFF!"
I especially love Batman's buffalo stance. Word.

The Flash looks like he's trying to make it in time to be in the picture. Seriously, does he always have to be running?

It's dramatic and a heck of a lot easier on the eyes, but I sort of like having some questions raised in a teaser poster.
All I have here is "Uh, wait, Hawkman's supposed to be important again?"

Theres an image that's demanding to be photoshopped.

It's far less silly than Countdown's poster and all those "secrets" behind everybody's damn position, but it's not that effective to me.
And Superman's cape looks tiny.
Just saying..

"Final Crisis" - is that a promise...?

Flash, Hal, and Hawkman look a little colorformy.

It's a cool image -- JG Jones can do no (or very little) wrong -- but pretty boring as a teaser.
Not that I care -- I've sworn off DC until Countdown/Final Crisis is all done and over with and they've gotten their act back together.

What exactly is it teasing? There will be crisis and deaths?
How novel.

Wow, we are getting another crisis... well lets hope it's gonna be really good, and actually resolve the stories that lead up to it, unlike the other one. Am I right?

Hey, maybe Busiek will do it like the one crisis event in astro city.
Two page spread and done.

I'll admit it's a better teaser than the two godawful Countdown ones, but come on, Final Crisis? Do they expect us to believe that? And then in 5 or 10 years when there have been 5 or 10 more crises, how stupid will this look?

Good call!
I don't think colorform art is necessarily a BAD thing - it is just that it very easily CAN look really bad.
I think Jones pulls it off here, but you're definitely on the money with the colorform comment.

Actually, I'm not sure either a) why this work by Jones is supposed to be considered really good or b)that it even is all that good.
I found it rather the opposite side of the world from striking. The poses look kind of silly. There's no great compositional aspect to it. It doesn't tease anything. It actually kinda seems a bit silly.
And there are at least ten covers per month from DC (as seen in Judging Books by Covers...) that far outstrip this piece in terms of either art or craft or concept or design or dynamism. So yeah. not a fan.

It pretty much looks like he did the big three and then was asked to add the other three, and had to just put them where they'd fit without modifying the original composition. The big 3 actually look like the composition was intentional, while the rest could be anywhere on the page.

Not a bad teaser. Kind of generic, though. A few heroes in poses. Not terribly exciting (but at least you know what it means, unlike the Countdown ones).
Still, I'm not really expecting much from Final Crisis. So far it seems to lack the key ingredients for a good Crisis:
- There aren't any major titles that need or are even susceptible to rebooting. Hell, most of DC's big were just rebooted within the last couple years.
- There's nothing that needs fixing. The original Crisis undid the multiverse and streamlined the DCU, Zero Hour theoretically fixed varying timelines and theoretically streamlined the DCU, and Infinite Crisis theoretically fixed the pervasive darkness of the DCU and made it more fun again while simultaneously restoring the multiverse. What's left for Final Crisis to do?
-They're bringing in Kurt Busiek to write it, whereas the earlier Crises used the biggest names DC had at the time (Wolfman for CoIE, Johns for IC).
- Most importantly, there's no Flash to kill. Bart just died and Wally just got back. The only one that would leave on the chopping block is Jay, and I can't see DC killing the original Flash.
No, I'm willing to bet right here and now that, at least in terms of major lasting repercussions, Final Crisis will be more on par with Invasion or Millenium, maybe Legends if it tries hard enough.
Let's all just hope it's not the next Bloodlines.

Wow. Stealthwise had such a big yawn, it broke through the page. Awesome.

Stealthwise's yawn burying itself inside the internet is more exciting than 99% of DC's output the last 5 years.

No, that teaser does nothing for me.
It's flat and dull and doesn't even make me curious as to what's happening.
I'd say it's better than the others (especially the Mary Marvel one) but diarrhea is better than a bloody stool, but it's still diarrhea.

Final Crisis?
More like final bullet in my brain for looking and caring about this shit.
I'm glad that the 2 books I read aren't affected by this tripe. Still better than the nasty looking EVS and Jimenez teasers.

Yes Flash must always run and Superman must always look pissed off. Do these people ever smile? No wonder I don't wanna be around them anymore. Seriously. Oh and death is the new holo-foil-chromo cover.
Can we remove DiDio yet?

I would point out that Busiek is a "big name"; in fact, I think you could make a pretty reasonable argument that he's the biggest-name writer in the industry who would actually consent to doing a big crossover right now. (Possible exceptions being Waid and Morrison.) But I do think he's a more well-known and well-respected writer than Geoff Johns--not only does he have some high-profile runs on big series to his name (Avengers, Superman, Marvels) and JLA/Avengers under his belt, he's also got serious indie-cred with 'Astro City'.
Wolfman at the time of 'Crisis', that's debatable...certainly, he was the biggest name in DC's stable of writers, but that's not entirely the same thing as being the biggest name in the industry. DC used 'Crisis' to lure in big name writers, but at the time it was written, 'Teen Titans' was really their only big seller.
But the main point is, Busiek is far from being a consolation prize...in fact, the only thing interesting me even remotely in the project right now is the attachment of his name to it.

And I thought Martian Manhunter was in the "big seven" instead of Hawkman ???

Out of curiosity,
What waulifies this as a "teaser?" It doesn't really seem to be teasing anything. I'd call this a promotional image. the previous teasers had hints towards story events, this we just get some heros teaming up, that always freaking team up in a pose with a photoshop filtered background.

That all depends on which Kurt Buseik we get.
If we get the Kurt Buseik who wrote Marvels, Astro City, Secret Identity and Arrowsmith then I'm all over this.
If (as seems more likely) we get the Kurt Buseik who wrote Avengers Forever, JLA: Syndicate Rules and The Power Company then I'm not so interested

Looks like they prolly have more names to scratch of DiDio's kill-list.

I liked the Power Company and Syndicate Rules! And Avengers Forever...OK, yes, it's basically fanwank on a twelve-issue scale, but it's better in trade form than it was when it was a monthly comic coming out every nine months.
