League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: I liked the comic and the movie. Two very different things, but I liked them both.

Sorry, folks, but I’ve got to come to the defense of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but was disappointed when I read the comic. Maybe if I’d read the comic first…. nah, probably not.

I disagree with From Hell, it sucked as an adaptation of the comic but on it’s own merit it wasn’t a bad movie.

The less said about the league movie the better.

Like all adaptations, it will be good to those who never read the source material and mercilessly scrutinized by those that did.

I guess you never saw “From Hell” or “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”.

Hey, with all the talk awhile back about how The Watchmen should be a 12-part HBO series, don’t you think it would be nice to do it as a series of 12 animated episodes? If the first few discs do well, maybe they’ll consider something like this. Especially as a ‘definitive version’ after the two-hour Hollywood version comes out.

I’m with stealthwise, I don’t expect it too be as good (let alone better) than the comic but it shouldn’t be too hard to make an entertaining flick out of it, especially with the talent involved. And with those broad panels New Frontier already has a kind of a movie feel to it.

It should be good, I loved the story.
It took me back to pre-Crisis days and entertained me, and added some insight into the characters. It was fun.

Certainly precedent is not on its side — there have oodles of these direct-to-dvd animated releases lately, both as comic book projects and as tie-ins to major motion pictures, with a handful of standalones as well. Almost all have sucked, with the notable exception of the big-budget The Animatrix and, of course, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

But all of the Marvel movies have been disappointing, with only isolated moments of coolness to recommend them. I’m encouraged — as is everyone — by Timm and Cooke’s involvement, as well as the strength of the original storyline, but even great animators like those two stumble every now and then.

Mostly it’s the economics that concern me — these animated features tend to have smallish budgets and wind up with merely TV-quality animation and short running times, and that’s a big impediment to being great. None of what I’ve seen with Superman: Doomsday, for instance, convinces me that it’ll look any better than the average episode of Justice League Unlimited, and I don’t think it’ll have animation team that was able to stretch the dollar
so far the way that show team did.

I’m cautiously optimistic, but I’m not expecting greatness from any of these projects. I’m definitely not writing New Frontier off, though, and I’d love to be proven hideously, terribly wrong.

I think Bruce Timm has earned unconditional trust by this point. If these three flicks are all bombs maybe we can start to doubt a little, but until then, Make Mine Timm.

I hope it is, but I would’ve loved to have seen this in volumes, like the books.
But hey, I’m not the one in charge of things. I do look forward to it.
