Ultimates Vol. 3 #1 Cover – Off To a Pretty Good Start

I know nothing about the contents of the book and whether it sounds good or not, but just based on the cover, that’s some impressive work on the part of Joe Madureira.

That reminds me…when’s the next issue of Battle Chasers coming out?…and First post!

Who’s the blond dude with the gun? Hawkeye?

So, Scarlet Witch and Iron Man are getting costume changes that make them look like their 616 counterparts?

An is that suppossed to be Valkyrie with the sword?

And I want an ending to Battle Chasers!!!

Blond dude with gun seems to have a bullseye on his forehead.

Do we have a projected release date for a first issue? Or will we just get random bits of art?

I think the symbol on A. Nonymous Blond Guy looks like an Ultimate’s take Hawkeye’s 616 cowl.

I’m glad they’re taking a stab at undoing some of the damage that the Ultimate Avengers ‘toon did to Black Panther.

Um, wait, did the final issue of volume 2 ever come out? No, seriously, I don’t ever remember seeing it.

The contents sound horrendous, but I’ll definitely be buying it anyway for that sweet art. Good job by Joe Mad.

This all looks nice and all but WOLVERINE AND SPIDER-MAN?! I am ok with them in the New Avengers, because of their long histories as being prominent heroes in those universes. But Ultimate Wolverine is an assassin, and Spider-Man is 16!
A lot of the designs show off Mad’s affinity for video games, for good and bad: Valkyre looks cool in a Gauntlet way, but Hawkeye’s Metal Gear looks is a little lame and excessive for the character and Black Panther’s silver claws needlessly make him look like a Soul Caliber reject.

“Um, wait, did the final issue of volume 2 ever come out? No, seriously, I don’t ever remember seeing it.”

Yep, it finally came out a few months back.

As far as the other comment about Wolverine and Spider-Man being on the team… with Wolverine being an assassin, it makes perfect sense for him to be on the Ultimates. The team is more hardcore than the 616 Avengers, so assassins, sharpshooters and the like, provided that they’re up to the task, definitely have a place on the team.

And yeah, Spidey is only 16, but they’ve been exploring his “relationship” with SHIELD and Nick Fury slowly over the course of the series, and a recent solicitation I saw seems to indicate that Spidey will be working for SHIELD in some capacity. Even if it’s just a throw-away story, it may serve towards having him eventually join the Ultimates.

I’m excited by the line-up. Sort of a mix between New Avengers (pre-CW) and the more classic Avengers rosters we’ve seen through the years. And though I usually detest Joe Mad’s work, this image looks nice. Jeph Loeb is hit or miss for me, but I’m intrigued enough to pick this up.

What’s wrong with Wolverine’s head? I know there are a lot of bad ways to draw Wolverine, but this is just kind of icky.

Heh… I should have noted in my previous comment that though I think this image looks nice, Joe Mad still can’t draw a decent Wolverine…

Really? This looks promising? Really? What a depressing piece of art. It looks like they’ve taken everything unique about the Ultimates (new costumes, classic line-up) and junked it. I pretty much gave up on the whole Marvel Universe when they put Wolverine and Spider-Man on the Avengers. (Or, put another way, Marvel gave up on the Marvel Universe when they put Wolverine and Spider-Man on the Avengers.) Looks like it’s time to give up on the Ultimate Universe too.

Spider-Man and Wolverine could just be guest-starring. Loeb loves cramming as many popular guest stars as he can in everything he writes.

Not overly impressed. Mad’s art just doesn’t seem to shine. I don’t know if it’s the coloring or the fact that Ultimate Cap looks like he put on a lot of weight.

Wolverine being on the Ultimates makes far more sense than him being on the New Avengers, in that it actually makes a kind of sense.

It’s still annoying. But not nearly as annoying as 616 Iron Man recruiting him because what their team really lacks is a low-powered serial killer.

Yuck. Whatever shred of curiosity might have driven me to pick up this book has been totally eradicated by that ugly, bland, regressive picture.

Neat!

I hope the insides are as good as the cover.

If Ultimates isn’t my favorite book of the last decade, it’s certainly my favorite not written by Alan Moore or Grant Morrison.

And it’d make me happy if it continues to be worth buying.

“embiggen”…?

Anyway….

Sold!!

Goodness. Even if I didn’t really care for the stories at least Hitch’s art was nice. Joe Mad…nope.

Not sure when Mad is going to have time for this as the video game he is working on is still a year away from release.

Granted he probably did more of the preliminary/design work for it, but from the interview I read he seems very involved.

“Hey, a new Ultima- wait, this was the Jeph Loeb thing.”

This isn’t a teaser image: it’s the plot synopsis for Jeph Loeb’s “script”. “See, EVERYBODY is running around looking cool, and it’ll be a huge epic, and you will know it’s epic because it has lots of characters and I’ll write “This is the most extreme anything that has ever happened!”

Jeph Loeb is writing it so I never had high expectations. This does nothing to change them.

Usually I’m the kind of guy saying people should take it easy and wait until they’ve actually read it before the judge.

This time though, I’m putting my judging-hat on; Ultimates just went down the drain. This sucks donkey-balls. Change can be good but this looks like a completely different title. Actually, it looks like art for a Marvel videogame by Capcom. Joe Mad seemed to me like a very weird choice for this title when it was announced and this completely confirms my suspicion, he’s an awful fit for Ultimates.

this line up reminds me of WildC.A.T.s

Capt = Spartan
Hawkeye = Grifter
Valkyrie = Zealot
Wolverine = Warblade
Scarlet Witch = Voodoo

Hey, come on, people – this is Jeph Loeb were talking about! I fully expect this to have all quality, imagination, and finely honed plotting we’ve come to expect from the writer of Superman/Batman or Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America.

My inner 14 year old thinks this looks bad ass.

I can’t judge something before it’s released, but for what it’s worth, I’m getting that same sinking feeling about this that I got around the time Grant Morrison’s “New X-Men” was ending and the hype was beginning on the next wave of X-titles.

I’m mostly annoyed that after Bryan Hitch went to the trouble of visually reinventing these characters to be as modern and realistic as possible, now we have Scarlet Witch wearing that goofy headdress from the 1960s and Hawkeye looking like a stowaway from a random ’90s Image comic.

Yeah, I’m gonna pass on this.

Look at it this way. At least the Millar/Hitch masterpiece won’t be tainted by a crappy continuation, because this will be so far removed we can just completely discount it.

Yeah I’m not thrilled with Spider-Man and Wolverine either, but they do both have histories in the Ultimate books with Fury. I hope it’s just a short stunt and not their introduction into the team, or that will be lame.

Of course, it’ll probably be lame anyway, because – even though I don’t entirely hate his work like every other commenter apparently does – it doesn’t seem up his alley at all.
