Great review, Tim.

As an aside-- I picked up a copy of your book at NYComic-con and read it a few months back. It was great stuff!

I thought it was appropriate that Batman #666 came out the same day Iron Fist #7 did because they are both doing a similar thing: using an event from another time to expand the mythology of the present. The difference with Morrison's issue is that he uses a story from the future while Brubaker and Fraction use the more traditional device of a legend from the past.

I give a bit more of an extensive review on my blog.

Had to read it three times and re-reference issues 664 and 665, but I enjoyed Batman 666. One reason is I feel like I got my money's worth. Instead of blowing threw it in a few minutes, I had to take time to read it, then re-read it, then skim it.
It does feel like we missed an issue since we never see the Bruce Wayne Batman's fight with the third Batman.
I have a question for the other readers...
So are we to assume that these three Batmen sought to replace Bruce Wayne while he was away. The first two were cops, correct (the one who shot the Joker and the Bane Batman)? If anything, I think that's what throws the story. I was lead to believe we'd be seeing some sort of clash between Batman and Gotham cops who were dressing like him and trying to "take over the franchise" so to speak. Then all of a sudden we're thrust into the future in this issue for the story arc's climax.
Now, to be fair to Grant, Batman clashing with rogue cops sounds kind of boring, so I actually preferred this was how he decided to wrap-up this storyline.
But I'm also wondering if Morrison will pick up some threads from this in future issues. I mean, it took him about five or so issues to clear up who the guy dressed like Batman who shot the Joker was. Maybe we'll see the "third Batman" in modern times.
Oh, and for all you Batman fanatics out there - So is there an actual Golden or Silver Age Batman story where he mets three future versions of himself? Since Grant's using the "League of Heroes" who whatver the name is in the coming arc, I'm trying to figure out if there is some actual history behind the current arc and the "Black Casebook".

It doesn’t seem fair that you didn’t read the last four All-Star Batman’s and yet you question why everyone thinks they are terrible.

Now, now. We don't really wish to scar the man for life, do we?

Seriously...I've read summaries @ various sites, and I agree with Greg's assessment above. Undeniably lovely art aside, this is just an incredibly bad comic, to the point of obviously demonstrating contempt for its audience. I fully appreciate the so-bad-it's-good' pop culture principle, but the unabashed love for this stuff strikes me as a wee bit masochistic.

Gotham is in a mess, but it's still standing. It isn't destroyed yet. The image of Gotham in flames is only in reflection when ACB is in the pool.

Damian is standing before the three Batghosts, but that doesn't mean he isn't one of them. In fact, he says that the third is the worst. Why is it the worst? Easy-- it's the biological son of the Bat.

Another touch-- compare Damian's hairdo on that page in 665 to the outline of the shadowed Bat that he's standing right next to. Unless Damian is Wolverine's son, they appear to match.

Plus, the key is that the third Batman sold his soul, which Damian has already done, and destroyed Gotham, which happens on Damian's say-so. His line at the end confirms this.

"The Demon Batman is Damian, not the Anti-Christ Batman."

This is quite possible; I could be looking at it in the wrong way. However, in issue #665 you can see Damian standing before the three Batmen ghosts, which suggests that it is not him. Plus, Bruce states the third one "destroyed Gotham." Given the mess Gotham seems to be in as seen in #666, I am thinking Gotham was already destroyed (in a way) before Damian kills the anti-Christ Batman.

Re: Batman #666

In his run to date, Morrison has presented three Batmen who are haunting Bruce Wayne. These are versions of hismelf. The killer Batman with a gun first appeared in Morrison's first issue. The Beastial Batman was the Bane-type Batman from the previous issues. The Demon Batman is the anti-Christ Batman in this issue. In #665, Bruce states: "The third sold his soul to devil and destroyed Gotham." In this issue we learn that the Demon Batman is returning for a second time when Damian kills him, so this issue assumes that Bruce Wayne failed the first time around.

I'm with DubipR--Warren Ellis is much more mellow in person than you'd expect from his Internet and prose persona. He says pretty much the same things he says when you read his stuff, but his intonation and body language have a certain intangible quality to them that puts you at your ease. He was very nice, signed my copy of 'Orbiter', and chatted briefly about the 'Constantine' movie. Oh, and at his panel he told an absolutely hilarious story about the genesis of 'Crooked Little Vein'. See if you can get him to tell it. :)

I'd check out Carey's x-men, but quite frankly, Marvel's cross over happy editor's have scared me off.

Which makes the only Big Two superhero books I currently read (in trade) She-Hulk and Blue Beetle (and whenever a Ultimate HC comes out I consider it, but I think I've dropped U. Spidey).
I'd be reading Busiek's Action Comics, cause that first trade was awesome, but nothing else has come out since.
What's that about?

I'm in the same boat as you about Batman, Greg. Maybe it'll read better in trade, but as a monthly, I felt like I had missed a crossover or a www.futurebatmaninhell.com website or something. I had a better grasp of what Morrison was doing on a re-read, but there's still too much a sense of overshooting in medias res. What's really needed is some sort of warning, like a big cover blurb saying "You'll Shit Your Pants At This SATANIC Fantasy!" or a credits-page indica trumpeting it as a stand-alone. It's like Morrison wrote the story fully expecting the cover or some other design element to clue the reader in, but editorial forgot to put it in.

I think I'm just about one or two more good issues of X-MEN away from really getting excited about this again. Carey's first issue or so was full of potential, but the stories floundered there for a while. But the past two, especially this one, show Carey starting to pull his threads together wonderfully. If he can keep this up (and if the solid-but-so-far-without-much-point Endangered Species doesn't fall flat), Messiah Complex could be quite something. Not that I think it will -- I've been saying "[upcoming event] could be quite something" for a decade now with the X-universe, with mostly junk to show for it -- but Carey and Bru at least act like they've been planning stuff. Now if only they could get artists without distracting tics....

Agreed. I love sports references, so "Fuck the heck" is gold to me. :)

I just want to chime in to agree that Fuck the Heck is an awesome catchphrase. I've been saying it all week.

Other than that, I thought that this was the most fun issue of Batman in Morrison's run so far.

Morrison’s Batman is probably the worst thing he’s written since… er… a very long time ago.

Yes, it has been a while since WildCATs shipped.

Funky, Jack Cross was one of Ellis's failed series he launched through DC a few years ago. It was basically a watered down Desolation Jones with Gary Erskine on art and at least one instance of X-Ray vision/bullet time in every issue.

It ran for 4 issues, claimed that another storyline was coming, then nothing more was heard until Ellis announced the series had been cancelled on his myspace page.
