It might be a conflict of interests, but I don’t think BOOM! Studios counts as a competitor.

All due respect to the parties involved, but does anyone else find it inappropriate that the EIC of a publisher (Waid) will be doing freelance work for a competitor?

It doesn’t seem right to me.

“excellent technically but soulless” is kind of the inverse criticism of Morrison, even his best work is not technically excellent and I’ve always found him to be embarassingly forthright about his own feelings

A few notes…
I’ve actually found the coverage of the convention pretty maddening. I mean, you have Didio and all these major DC writers up there and nobody asks any decent questions. All people care about is “is Krypto coming back”. How about “Sooooo, Paul Dini and Grant Morrison, how linked are Countdown and Final Crisis? Do we need to buy the first to understand the latter?” Or, “Dan Didio, how many other Countdown tie-ins can we expect over the coming year and what’s the point?” Or how about “Grant, how long do you intend to remain on Batman?” I believe the Final Crisis artist, in his interview Friday at Newsarama, indicated Morrison was trying hard to just write a good story, continuity be damned. So it makes me think that Countdown is pretty much a pointless waste of money and I’ll get all I need from Morrison’s project. It would have been nice to see this discussed somewhere.
Also, Waid’s absence at any of DC’s panels make me question how long he’ll remain on Brave and the Bold and Flash. I know he emphasized his new BOOM! position allows him to continue his freelance work, but still, it was a glaring absence. I’d love for someone to have asked Didio how long Waid will continue those projects and what’s in store for the two books.
Or how about “Is Richard Donner going to continue on Action Comics with Geoff Johns?”
Really, other than Morrison on Final Crisis, there was really a lot of “non-news” from DC, and part of that is the fault of the fans asking the questions and the so called “news sites” covering the event.
We could have learned a ton more had the right questions been asked.

My heart sunk at two things: One, Grant Morrison on ‘Final Crisis’–sorry to the GoaC fans, but I really think that DC lately has brought out the worst in him, and I kind of suspect that this will wind up being a bit of a trainwreck (mind you, I suspected that from the beginning, but Morrison’s name does not fill me with hope right now like it does some of you.)

And two, the Doctor Who comic announcement. Some might be surprised at this, as I have made it pretty clear in the past that I’m a tremendous Doctor Who fan–but it’s exactly because I’m a tremendous Doctor Who fan that I’m concerned. Specifically, I’m enough of a tremendous Doctor Who fan to immediately recognize the name Gary Russell–he’s a pretty good editor who unfortunately also believes himself to be a good writer, and…well, isn’t. He wrote what was considered one of the worst Doctor Who novels (Divided Loyalties), as well as some other fairly terrible books and audio plays. This is not who I’d have picked to write the comic. (Paul Cornell would probably top the list, for the curious.)

Mind you, I already think Morrison is overrated (excellent technically, but so stuck in a soulless, detached metafiction rut it’s scary), but add to the fact that Dan Didio remains the grand architect and that he has to tie this story into what the other writers at DC are doing (most of whom are horrendous) and I still have no faith in Final Crisis.

What I find exciting about the DC Heroes collection is that it’s an actual, physical collection that you can walk into the bookstore and pick up. And let’s face it, unless you have a huge monitor, it’s still easier to read a book than to repeatedly scroll up and down on your computer screen.

I’ve been hoping for months that someone would collect the stories in print. I figured the ideal time would be simultaneous with the DVD, but at this stage I don’t think that’s likely to happen.

“I can’t top what Geoff did in Infinite Crisis,” Morrison said before revealing that Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth, would be on the last page of “Final Crisis” and Anthro, the First Boy, would be on the first.

Sounds like he already did.

This was a lot of fun to go through, so why aren’t there any this year?

“The Twelve” does sound great. I liked the idea even more when it was called “Watchmen.”

Yet another reason for me to avoid anything JMS is involved with.

I've been waiting for The Twelve to be announced for what feels like years now. And, I'll continue to wait--for the trades, which are sure to be far, far cheaper than picking up a twelve issue maxi-series. Ba is completely outdoing himself with those Casanova covers, man. Amazing work. That series can't return fast enough. The Next Issue Project is probably the greatest concept ever to hit Image. I hope the execution is as strong as the idea. The art on Stumptown looks goddamn gorgeous. I may have to pick that book up. But, the best news has to be The Lion of Rora. Gage and Trippe on the same story? It's like they created it just for me! Oh, and Winick and Churchill could prove to be the worst creative team DC has ever seen. Lagoon Boy deserves better.
