On Uncanny...eh...

The ONE soilders are supposed to be rather trained and disciplined, and not go off half cocked and start a war on behalf of the United States. (He fired unprovoked on the Queen of Wakanada) Now _THAT_ would be a story worth following up on. We won't see it, mind you.

Greg--

Thanks for taking the time to check out the book! Just want to point out that this is the first issue of ten, not three or four - seems strange to believe I'd lay everything out so baldly from the start... Still, definitly appreciate the support in spite of the fact that it's not a preferred genre for you. Hope to hear more of your thoughts as the book continues.

And definitly check out Dark Tower - Tom's right about the fourth book basis, but I would definitly recommend finishing all of the books first. It's not necessary but it definitly adds even more depth to the experience.

Personally, I was interpreting "arcanium" as one of those fake comic book elements (perhaps of a mystical bent) and the title "et in arcanium ergo" as something like "and I work in arcanium". Seems to fit a Metal Men comic, especially a chapter involving mystical Atlantean armored guys. And it also fits the "heathen metal" that the sorcerer dude is trying to do something with (exactly what, I'm not entirely sure).

I'm starting to wonder if Pak maybe didn't front-load WWHulk too much and is sort of drifting into ridiculousness to keep the adrenaline rushing. Hulk taking down Black Bolt? Unexpected, but cool. Hulk thrashing Iron Man? Titanic. Hulk smash the Avengers? Woo-hoo! But Hulk out-raging Dr. Strange on the astral plane and somehow breaking Stephen's hands? How is that supposed to work? Did Hulk so overpower Strange's mind that he created phantom cripple? And to what point for the story? So an already supposedly-all-powerful Sorcerer Supreme is forced to become an even-more-all-powerful magical demigod that most people haven't even heard of in order to beat a Hulk with absolutely no defense against magic whatsoever? Of all the fights Pak had to make Hulk pick (excluding Xavier), Strange was the one he probably shouldn't have spent two issues dwelling on (why not have Hulk/Strange be the fight that takes place off-panel and let Hulk/Bolt be the big throwdown?). I know it's a big dumb smash-em-up thing, but Pak had been doing it pretty smart until now.

You know what would be cool? If, once all these "Based on ideas by Grant Morrison" titles are cancelled (and sadly, I'm afraid they will be), DC were to put them all in the same book. Either as an anthology title with the creative teams intact, or as an actual team with Grant himself at the helm. The Atom and Metal Men are probably DC's highest-profile properties that will never in a million years support their own titles, but together? Maybe toss in some other too-weird-or-cultish-for-the-mainsteam guys like the Challs or Sea Devils? If the new Outsiders made it this long, these guys should be cake.

Brubaker seems to get Xavier better than anyone since Lobdell (yes, SCOTT Lobdell). Chuck's always been willing to walk dangerously close to the abuse-of-power line, often doing uncomfortably not-right things in not-wrong-either manner; nice to see that Bru gets that.

Speaking of Uncanny, is anyone else a little weirded-out by how Storm's face is looking these days? In theory, I applaud the idea of making her appear more ethnically African (though isn't she like 3rd generation Afro-Causasian?) and not just like a white woman painted brown, but she looks...well, ugly in both Uncanny and FF. Storm's supposed to have an alien beauty, not look like an alien.

Welcome to Tranquility was good, but the reference to Robert Kirkman bothered me. I don't know why exactly, it just irked me.

Great issue though.

I should point out one thing about the Dark Tower series.

The first series is based on the fourth book of the Stephen King book series but, the second series of the Marvel adaptation will go further than that depicted in the book series.

Apparently, Marvel is planning something like a 30 issues series set in the character's past that wasn't covered in the book series.

I guess we're heading into the heart of darkness!

Besides, it's a gorgeous piece of art. How can you not beat that! Wait for the trade or hardcover if you want.

"It’s almost as dumb a name as Mr. Fantastic. Give the lady a good superhero name, please!"
People have tried, thats how we got Warbird and Binary. I think Ms. Marvel is for the best.

A couple of asides:
Ross has been chasing the Hulk for years and has come as close if not closer than anyone else to stopping him when he is on a rampage. Yeah it was futile, but he was the best man for the job.
-and-
Larocca draws terrible Sentinels. You wouldn't even know they were Sentinels unless it was mentioned in the story.

Judging by how long it took for the 303 trade to come out, I'm guessing we'll see a Chronicles of Wormwood trade some time in early 2009.

Greg,

Read the fourth Dark Tower book and you should be set for the mini-series, from what I've heard.

And Welcome to Tranquility is quite good, yeah.

Shark-Man!?!? AWESOME

You know, even with Sleepwalker and the Nextwave incarnation of Machine Man on the cover, I *still* won't buy Ms. Marvel. It's just that bland.

I'm enjoying the World War Hulk series so far. Have a review of the first three issues up on my site.

I was going to try out Faker, now not so sure. Eh, maybe I'll wait for the trade as well.

As much as I enjoyed The Red Star, the book of the week was definitely Jonah Hex. Hex, Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla in a done-in-one issue. You should've gone with that!

Probably the DCU's best comic on the market right now.

Phew - too many comics! I haven't been reading the Dark Tower because I haven't read the books yet (I read the first three, but not the rest) and I don't want it to be spoilt. SPOILT, I say! I'd rather read the books than the comics.
