Snark Free Corner for 8/6
Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!
Enjoy!
COOL COMIC THING
One of the coolest things in comics is the whole idea of mismatched duos.
It is always fun to look back at "classic" duos and realize how their partnerships really didn't make too much sense at the time, only in retrospect.
Like Green Lantern and Green Arrow.
They were in the Justice League together for years without the two being an actual pair, until Denny O'Neil figured they'd make a good team.
![]()
And you know what, he was right!!
Green Arrow and Green Lantern at least had the "Green" thing going - Blue Beetle and Booster Gold really had NOTHING in common when they were on the Justice League together, except for the fact that they were both pretty much broke.

That, in and of itself, was enough to throw the two men together, but their friendship and amusing banter made the "Blue and Gold" team a real treat for readers.
Like Green Arrow and Green Lantern, Fire and Ice have the name connection, but before Keith Giffen and JM DeMatteis added them to the Justice League (basically because they needed SOME female characters, and the DC Universe was sadly pretty sparse at the time), they were merely background Global Guardian characters.

Under Giffen and DeMatteis, this pairing of the free-spirited Fire with the old-fashioned Ice made quite the impression with fans.
Over at Marvel, you don't get much more mismatched than Beast and Wonder Man, but the two bonded over the fact that they were both single male Avengers, and soon they had a very strong bond, strained only by the fact that Beast is sorta needed in the X-Men titles...

Otherwise, I bet the two would be paired up more often. Heck, they even had their own MINI-SERIES together!!
Mismatched duos - a cool comic thing.
Name some other neat mismatched comic book duos!
COVER THEME GAME
As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn't something obvious like "They all have prices!" "They all have logos!" "They all feature a man!" etc.
In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.
Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

SNARK FREE CHALLENGE
What two current disparate heroes do you think would make a good mismatched duo?
THE COVER GAME
This week's game is as follows...
Find me a cover that features Aquaman on the cover as the sole Justice Leaguer present, but is not one of Aquaman's actual comic books (or a comic starring Aquaman, like Showcase or Adventure Comics).
Floating heads don't count!
For example (and you can't use this one!), this Justice League of America cover fits....

Remember, only one cover per commenter!
Good luck!

Y'know, more than anything actually RELATING to mismatched duos, today's Snark-Free Corner makes me think "God, I love Maguire's Black Canary." As patently ridiculous as that costume is, Maguire made it work perfectly and that cover was forever burned into my preadolescent brain.

Timber Wolf and Blok of the Legion of Superheroes were a cool mismatched duo.
T-Wolf being a dumb jock and Blok a wise old philosopher, they had one of my favourite comic book friendships ever.

The bestest of all mismatched duos, of course...Power Man and Iron Fist! Absolutely splenderiffic.
I know it'll never really get to the point where it's a "duo", because he's got too many books to star in, but I really like the way that the new Blue Beetle interacts with Batman when they team up. They have a nice dynamic.
As for good potential duos...Justice and the Vision, if the Vision ever gets out of his current continuity hell. (Actually, the phrase "if (insert character name here) ever gets out of his/her current continuity hell" would occur frequently in any duos I might suggest, so I'll bow out here.)

Maybe I missed the point, because you were looking for moslty comedy duos (or in the case of GL/GA, unintentional comedy), but I always thought Batman and Superman were a mismatched duo. I think it was Miller who said something along the lines of "Batman is a man who thinks chaos is the norm and it is his duty to enforce order. Superman believes that order is the norm. These two people would not get along."

I LOVE the Timber Wolf/Blok interaction. It's my single favorite thing from that era of the LSH, and that's saying a lot.
I think I'd really enjoy a current Firestorm/Blue Beetle pairing myself.

Yes, I do think that Superman and Batman are a classic example of a mismatched duo--in fact, they're so classic that we overlook them. (I also think it's neat that over in 'PS238', Captain Clarinet and Moon Shadow are starting to develop a "World's Finest" sort of dynamic. One of the many many neat things about PS238.)

What constitutes "mismatched"?
I can't see it with Fire + Ice or Blue + Gold. At least with GL+GA there were on massively different power levels.
The same applies with Superman + Batman, but then anyone who teams up with Batman is going to be massively outclassed.

I think Batman and Superman were only a mismatched duo after Miller's interpretation of their relationship became the norm. Before that, they were pretty similar in terms of personality and disposition.

Green Lantern (Hal) and The Flash (Barry). Not so much as the super heroes, but rather in their secret identities. Barry being the uber-dull police scientist in love with (then married to) Iris West and the ladies man Hal. Their interactions were always more the hilights of the team-ups than their super-antics.

Cover game: Dolphin, Aquaman, and Bronze Tiger all went on missions as part of the Justice League Task Force during its "Mission Impossible" era (Aquaman in the first story, Bronze Tiger in the KnightQuest tie-in where Gypsy stood around for two issues and didn't speak, and Dolphin in Peter David's extremely weird women and reasonable facsimiles only two-parter).

GREEN GOBLIN (Phil Urich) on the first clue.
I kept expecting the next clue to prove me wrong, but each one just added to the rarity of my knowing who you were referring to.
hahha
I almost never have a clue for that game.
------
Superman & Batman are mismatched heroes that are a "team" more often than not (although, they have been portrayed on occasion - and rightfully so, that they really should NOT get along).

Like Chad and Sanctum, I got Green Goblin on #1, and was surprised when the rest of the clues bore that out. I'm sad to say that's the first time ever I've gotten a "Who Is It?" I don't know why ol' Phil was the first to come to mind; maybe that Loners mini-series is having more of an impact on us than we think.

Quantum and Woody, of course! (Granted, they were designed to be a mismatched pair).
Back in the Claremont days, Wolverine and Nightcrawler...that they'd pal around and bet six packs with each other on their games of tag was great!
Human Torch and Spider-Man - One's the golden boy celebrity of the rich and famous superhero set basically doing good because they have nothing else to do, the other's the poster boy for outlaw down on their luck doing right because it's right.

Who Is It? Phil Urich AKA Green Goblin. Thought it was him with #1 (don't know many characters using the name of a former supervillain other than him), the lack of super-powers and him being a former superhero helped too, #4 assured it and #5 deffinitely nailed it.
[QUOTE]GREEN GOBLIN (Phil Urich) on the first clue.

Same here.

What about Cable and Deadpool? Until recently they were THE mismatched duo.
-------------
Characters who could be a good mismatched duo? Wolverine and Spider-Man, but they doing it for years 3 times a week. They're the punchline of NA.
Brad Meltzer developed something between Red Arrow and Hawkgirl, probably intended for a romantic relationship, but I can see them arguing in the middle of a fight. Love/hate duo.
Amadeus Cho and Rick Jones, helping Hulk and fighting for his affection at the same time.

Cable and Deadpool were a great pair. Their friendship dynamic was fantastic. Another weird one - Wolverine and Kitty Pryde. For that matter, Kitty Pryde and Colossus - have two power sets been that drastically different? Brute force and complete evasion? One I'd love to see - Deadpool and Batman. How long do you think it would take for Batman to break his "no killing" rule? Five seconds?

Kind of evocative of Army of Darkness, no?

I think it's hilarious that Dale Gunn is on that Justice League cover. I'm sure that helped sell a lot of extra copies to all the Dale Gunn-loving youngsters of the '80s.
Anyway, yeah, I think of Spider-Man and the Human Torch as being the quintessential mismatched pairs and one of Marvel's most fun hero friendships. Pity the two characters haven't hung out much in recent years.

Favourite mismatched pair has to be Cyborg and Changelling...always my favourite thing in the Wolfman/Perez glory days of the New Teen Titans.
I'd also give props to Katana and Halo in Batman and the Outsiders, although both characters were created for the same book (though their friendship did seem highly unlikely at first). Nowadays Katana seems like a second-rate Elektra clone without Halo around to make it a super-powered maternal verison Lone Wolf and Cub.
Nowadays, I'd love to pair up Supergirl with someone like Black Canary or Zatanna or someone. Maybe the annoying teenage bubblehead thing that I hate about the current Supergirl might change through regular pairings with a mature superheroine (oh, decent writers would help, and artists...)

Cover game: Adventures of the DC Universe #6 http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=60683&zoom=4
Mismatched pairs: Here's an early one that I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet: Hawkman and Atom. At one point, presumably when sales figures on both of their individual books were low (the same reason that Power Man and Iron Fist became a team), DC combined them in one title that only lasted seven issues before it was cancelled. In my opinion, this is the ultimate mismatched pair: it's difficult to even show both characters in action in the same panel. Hawkman requires long-range shots to show him effectively, and obviously Atom requires extreme close-ups.

As far as mismatched mutants go, I've always thought that the Wolverine/Cyclops pairings throughout the years have been great fun, with the thing tying them together being that they both loved the same woman.
This was such a great dynamic that it was easily carried over into the movies.
Next up is Wolverine and Kitty Pryde. Sweet, teenaged suburban girl hangs with fatal, old, smoking killing machine. They have adventures. In Japan.
