This was such a great dynamic that it was easily carried over into the movies.

Mismatched pairs: Here's an early one that I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet: Hawkman and Atom. At one point, presumably when sales figures on both of their individual books were low (the same reason that Power Man and Iron Fist became a team), DC combined them in one title that only lasted seven issues before it was cancelled. In my opinion, this is the ultimate mismatched pair: it's difficult to even show both characters in action in the same panel. Hawkman requires long-range shots to show him effectively, and obviously Atom requires extreme close-ups.

I'd also give props to Katana and Halo in Batman and the Outsiders, although both characters were created for the same book (though their friendship did seem highly unlikely at first). Nowadays Katana seems like a second-rate Elektra clone without Halo around to make it a super-powered maternal verison Lone Wolf and Cub.

Nowadays, I'd love to pair up Supergirl with someone like Black Canary or Zatanna or someone. Maybe the annoying teenage bubblehead thing that I hate about the current Supergirl might change through regular pairings with a mature superheroine (oh, decent writers would help, and artists...)

Anyway, yeah, I think of Spider-Man and the Human Torch as being the quintessential mismatched pairs and one of Marvel's most fun hero friendships. Pity the two characters haven't hung out much in recent years.

Characters who could be a good mismatched duo? Wolverine and Spider-Man, but they doing it for years 3 times a week. They're the punchline of NA.
Brad Meltzer developed something between Red Arrow and Hawkgirl, probably intended for a romantic relationship, but I can see them arguing in the middle of a fight. Love/hate duo.
Amadeus Cho and Rick Jones, helping Hulk and fighting for his affection at the same time.

Back in the Claremont days, Wolverine and Nightcrawler...that they'd pal around and bet six packs with each other on their games of tag was great!

Human Torch and Spider-Man - One's the golden boy celebrity of the rich and famous superhero set basically doing good because they have nothing else to do, the other's the poster boy for outlaw down on their luck doing right because it's right.
