I'd heard that 'Defenders' was cancelled to make way for X-Factor, too, but common sense tells me that if Defenders was doing any kind of business by that point, they either wouldn't have moved those characters out, or they would have kept the book going without them. I'd have to assume, on the existing evidence, that the writing was on the wall for the series and that editorial's idea for a title featuring the original X-Men was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Yes!! This was always one of my favorite runs of any comic ever, in large part because of the reasons you just outlined. (At its absolute best when it was a matrimonial thing, with Walt pulling artist duty.) I loved the way Louise Simonson completely and utterly said "yup, these are some damn stupid ideas" and then dealt with them... and in the process was able to keep Cyclops as one of my favorite characters of all time. (And yes, I know that I'm the only one.)

TF_loki: to be fair, I didn't read much of the post PAD stuff, but I wonder if it's that he ran them as a government team, as opposed to a superteam that "worked" for the government. PAD had Havok pull out a checkbook to pay off mercenary Random, rather than get into a big fight with him. stuff like that.

I've never read the early issues, but I have to say that the gov't incarnation of X-FACTOR was (along with SAVAGE DRAGON) one of my favorite comics for a couple of years in the early 90s. Until they killed Madrox in #100, the Madrox-hatin' badgers.
