Would "Fed up" be a valid reason? "You people suck. Save yourselves for a change." Of course, now that I say it, I'm hard-pressed to think of an example that quit and stayed quit.

By the way, Michael -- I've read some but not all of that big Eclipso crossover you mention, and was generally unimpressed. I don't think I've ever bothered to go back and reexamine the parts that are in my collection since I first read them. So either I never read the bit with Will Payton dying or else I've managed to blot out the memories.

I have a full run of James Robinson's "Starman" title -- but it's been a long time since I actually bothered to go back and read it. I just vaguely remembered that Jack eventually found Will; I didn't remember details (if they were provided) on just how the heck Will ended up in that predicament in the first place! I'll make corrections to that bit before I post this material anywhere else, though, now that you've brought that to my attention.

Lorendiac, I was able to read you GeoCities writings.

They're quite good. Althogh you may need to update your "died just to make the event dramatic" to include Kon-El who died in place of Dan Didio's choice of Nightwing for Infinite Crisis. Unless he counts as a new category: Died because we don't have the rights anymore.

I suggest getting either a LiveJournal or Blogspot account though to host them. Both I believe are without bandwidth limits. Otherwise there's always MySpace too.

I have another Reason to Quit the Superhero Racket:

To Help People. In the Golden Age, the JSA quit being superheroes for a while to enlist in the armed forces, because they thought they could do more good as soldiers than they were doing as superheroes.

And Green Arrow has quit (or at least scaled it way back) briefly a couple of times to run for mayor, hasn't he?

Superman's powers faded away at the end of 'Infinite Crisis' because his final battle with Superboy Prime took place under a red sun, and he drained his solar batteries in the fight. It took a year to recharge them to the point where he could be, well, super again. (Although they came back abruptly, not gradually, because on a subconsicous level he was refusing to use them, enjoying the simple human life he was living while his powers were gone.)

Ian -- in case you were wondering, I never had the slightest intention of hiding my own biases when I asked those rhetorical questions that you quoted. I think the work "trashing" was, in fact, deliberately meant as a strong hint at the ironic tone I had in mind as I wrote that bit.

After all, what good is an axe that never gets any grinding? :)

Okay, let's talk about the GeoCities thing first. I've been using the same free account on GeoCities for years and never had any real trouble with it. But just now, after seeing Michael's comment about the limits, I logged in over there and looked at the available data.

So far today, 821 pageviews have been refused, it says. Ouch! I didn't know how many people would actually try to follow those links to my older lists when Brian Cronin was kind enough to post this one on his blog, and I didn't know how many people it would take to exceed whatever the limits were for a free site. The data transfer limit was never a red-hot issue in my life before.

Before I next ask Brian to post something of mine, I'll make some sort of alternate arrangements regarding the location of any other archived material I want to link to at the bottom. At this moment I don't know what those arrangements will be, but I'll explore my options now that the problem has reared its ugly head. :(

I might could suggest one or two more, which someone smarter than myself will surely demonstrate already overlap with the existing categories.

<B>"14." Mission Accomplished</B> -- In this case, the hero in question was only in the game for a very specific reason, i.e., to see the defeat of a particular foe or to achieve a very specific task. Their mission completed, the hero then has no further reason for, well, heroing.

To take the only solid example I can come up with, Marvel's vampire hunters Frank Drake and Blade basically vanished from the scene after Doctor Strange v.2 #62, in which they helped Doc destroy all the world's vampires with a magical spell. It took quite a long time for another writer to come up with the angle that they were now more generic "occult investigators"...and by that point, writers had figured out a way of restoring vampires over in Strange's latest title.

I suppose this could be taken as overlapping with the retirements of some of the more WWII-specific heroes, and thus might merely be a more rarefied species of "Burnout" or "Quitting Your Job."

<B>"15." Off the Leash</B> -- This applies very specifically to heroes who weren't, well, really heroes at all, but rather villains operating under some form of coercion or towards some secret, villainous goal. The Kurt Busiek version of the Thunderbolts, or at least Zemo and the Fixer, would qualify here; so too might certain characters in Mike Carey's ongoing X-Men run, whose names I will omit so as to avoid spoilers.

It may be that this category doesn't entirely belong, as it applies primarily to characters who aren't quite heroes in the first place.

I offer these not as necessary additions or correctives, but in the spirit of the continuing conversation Lorendiac's lists mean to initiate and sustain.

To be nitpicky, the Will Payton Starman was originally out of action because he was dead, following the big Eclipso crossover that year, where he blew up to save the day.

It was only years later when he was retconned into being alive and imprisoned. :>

Not sure if you'd consider it MIA, or Imprisoned, or a combo of both, but there's also, "I'm still doing it, just somewhere else." See Hulk recently on another planet, and various other heroes who went to another planet, dimension, and/or time, meanwhile dropping out of normal continuity.

"After all, what’s more important? Being absolutely self-consistent within your shared fictional universe? Or trashing “continuity” in favor of telling any sensational story you happen to feel like telling this week"

Well I think using the word "trashing" makes your opinion on that debate apparent.

That aside I liked it. A comprehensive and interesting break-down of 'retirement'. Excellent examples too, even if some of them included some personal axe-grinding.
