Sad news

Mike Wieringo has died.  Wow.  I don't have much to say.  That's just really sad.  There's a lot more about Ringo at the link, if for some reason you've been living in a hole and don't know much about his work.  My sympathies to his family, obviously.  It's a big loss to comics.

That's really quite sad.

I can't say I was a huge fan of his, but I did read his run on FF with Mark Waid, and always though his art had a fun, fresh look to it.

Geez, he was so young.

holy crap... that just ruined my day.

Very sad news.

I, like many others, I'm sure, first discovered Mike's work through his run on the Flash, a real high point in mainstream comics in the 90s, IMO.

My thoughts are with Mike's friends and family right now.

Goodbye Mike, and thanks for all the cool stuff.

Oh geez. That sucks.

Mike was a brilliant artist, a nice guy, and a reason to love comics. He drew some of my favorite issues and runs of all time, and he did it with a stylistic flair and gorgeous linework. I was glad to write a piece on him... I just wish I'd written a far better one. I'd assumed he'd be around for years to come.

My thoughts go to his family, friends, and the industry in which he produced fantastic work. This loss is gut-wrenching; he was far too young. I'm certain he'll be forever missed. I know *I'll* forever miss him and his work.

Rest in peace, Ringo.

I don't even know what to say. He was so young...

He will truly be missed.

The artist of TELLOS and FANTASTIC FOUR will definitely be missed.

Not just by many fans across the nation, but also by those who worked with him.

May he rest in peace.

I've always been a fan especially his work on Spider-boy and The Flash.

This is terrible news. Ringo was a legend in my opinion. RIP

Very sudden, very sad. I had to check to see if he was as young as I thought he was. 44 is no age to die. God bless to him and his family.

I admit I first saw 'Ringo's art on Fantastic Four, rather than on Flash like most people did, but I loved it immediately. I know he took some hits for having a "cartoony" style, but sometimes that's what a book needs, and he was completely unabashed about it -- as he should have been. I loved the variant cover he did for Lions, Tigers, and Bears...it was just the perfect tone for the material. And his blog was so personal...he just seemed like such a great guy to know. The industry needs more great guys like Mike Wieringo, not fewer.

Oh man. That is really sad news.

Rats. We lost a good 'un, and there aren't so many of those out there that we can afford it.

This hit me like a sledgehammer and has not stopped hurting ever since.
Both the real and the fictional world will be a bit bleaker, a little sadder for having lost him.
Ringo! was a great artist and a wonderful human being, he'll be forever remembered and sorely missed by all who shared his passion for the medium.
My deepest regards go out to his friends and family.
And for Mike himself (wherever you are):
You will not be forgotten.

My deepest sympathies go out to Mike's friends and family, at what must be a very difficult time for them.

This is tremendously sad and so unexpected. Wieringo was one of the absolute best contemporary comic book artists. It's a huge tragedy to lose an artist like that, and an even bigger tragedy to lose a man so early in his life and so suddenly.

My deepest condolences to Mike's family, friends and peers in the industry.

This is stunning, horrible news.

My condolences to his family.

Really upsetting. The guy was at the top of his game too. And Image has that massive Tellos hardcover coming out in a week or two.

If not for Ringo and Mark Waid's run on the Flash, I would not love superhero comics the way I do now. If not for that run of the Flash, I'm not sure I would've been open to discovering what comics had to offer beyond superheroes. I didn't know the man and obviously can't feel the same loss his family will, and yet his loss is is truly depressing and devastating to me. Ringo formed much of the basis of what I like in comic art and what I expect it to be. Losing him is just not fair.

You can keep your fishlips and your nine cheekbones in one face - Ringo was easily one of my favorite artists, and I was really bummed when I heard the word earlier today.

When was the last time a high-profile guy like this died? One who was still working, I mean? Dave Cockrum's death was huge, but he'd been sick for a while and not working. Mike was in the middle of some book for Marvel, and died suddenly...

Oh... fuck.

That's just really, really sad. He was a really nice guy too, at least, in the online conversations I've read with him, and by all other accounts.

This is really harsh news. RIP Ringo.

That's really too bad. I was quite fond of Mike Wieringo's smooth style and expressive faces. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Know that he was talented and original. He shall be missed.

This is so sad. Condolences to Mike's family and friends, and to the whole comics community, for losing such a staggeringly talented artist at such a young age. This isn't fair at all.

I liken this to the passing of Mike Parobeck: a young, hugely talented, yet underappreciated artist dies before his time. I will continue to read and love his work, and pine for what might have been.
Rest easy Ringo.

Sad, and freaky in a way...
