The Jewish stereotype in the second strip is so disgusting it's almost hilarious.

Even worse than the exaggerated lips of the black child in the third strip.

Like Connor, I always thought the Yellow Kid was some yellow peril stereotype as well.

"but how in the hell did they work the Yellow Kid into Blade" The recent (excellent) Blade series took a lot of time looking at his history and his origin. All of this took place around the turn of the century. Good choice Bill. I'm sure I wouldn't 'get' The Yellow Kid if I read it today, but its importance is unparalleled. As for the Family Circus in 2107, yeah I'm sure we'll still be subjected to it but will Dolly still be borderline retarded?

Yes! Comic strip week wouldn't have been right without the first instance of color. I'm surprised no one's run with the text on t-shirt concept; it'd be a great, easy way for a mute character to communicate, similar to Awesome Andy's chalkboard or Emoticon's mask (not that he's mute, but you know).

Thanks, ks. Yes, I just discovered the existence of Mr. Oldbuck today in researching this column. Seems neat, but I haven't delved into it. The Yellow Kid, though, definitely provoked comics fever.

And Michael, apparently the Yellow Kid is a Nosferatu-y creature who fought Blade. Yes. Haven't read it, though-- heard it through the grapevine.

Conor-- sure you're not thinking of the Yellow Claw? Heh.

Bill, you really handled yourself well under all the criticism this week.The Yellow Kid is a great way to end the week. I am still wondering about Dilbert and Mutts, but hey, it's your column. Have you ever heard of the Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck? It was printed in the states in the 1840's and could be considered the actual start of the medium rather than the Yellow Kid. Their are articles about it, I recommend looking for it, it is very interesting.
