Anderson wrote:
Years from now, when people are still reading Ellison’s fine stories, no one will care about this settlement agreement or what Don MacPherson said (and doesn’t understand) about it.

You may very well be right, but I don't agree that I don't understand the ins and outs of the settlement and U.S. legal system. That aside, though, the editorial is primarily about how the industry and fans may perceive the settlement and the actions of the parties involved.

I like reading Don MacPherson's reviews, but that editorial was really pretty silly. He showed that he knows very little about the American legal system, the nature of settlements, and the details of the Ellison/Groth lawsuit. Years from now, when people are still reading Ellison's fine stories, no one will care about this settlement agreement or what Don MacPherson said (and doesn't understand) about it.

Great writer in his time, but his sell-by date would've been ... when? Maybe during Bush the Less Stupid's administration, at the very latest?

The site's been experiencing higher-than-normal traffic the last couple of days, so that might explain occasional downtimes. It's been fine all day today, as far as I can tell.

The page is down again.

I used to be a huge fan of Ellison but now I'd just assume go to the BMV and listen to people fume in line. Thankfully he's still got his body of work.

Heh, I read that book a couple of months ago (The Gerber and Goodwin interviews are worth reading, but the Moore piece is far too short.) without realizing the lawsuit centered around its contents. The impression I got was that Mr. Ellison appeared to be a man who wouldn't hesitate to cop to his own failings, so long as it meant he could spend paragraphs lambasting and denigrating others who committed the same sins as he - dropping a couple of pebbles on his shoe so that he could cast stones with a clean conscience, as it were.

Now I'm half-expecting to see him in the 741 shelves of my local library tearing his interview out of their copies.

Is it just me that the site won't load for, or has the Internet itself gotten tired of news of that old crank clogging up its pipes and begun to rebel?

Angry, angry dude.

I imagine him to be like George Costanza, walking around and shouting, "EVERYONE'S alwyas SCREWIN' me!"

To be fair, I'm assuming it's a response from Mr. Ellison. I've contacted the webmaster of his site to try to verify, but he has responded to other commentaries on the subject on other blogs as well (such as Heidi MacDonald's The Beat).

Thanks for the links, though, Brian!

Huh.

I like Harlan Ellison and all, but what a pain in the ass to have to BE Harlan Ellison all the time.

I see the lawsuit as Harlan Ellison trying to do attack dog-y style Harlan Ellison things.

And ten years too late at that. Groth accusing Ellison of not paying his legal bills (if false) - yeah, I can see how that might hurt his career.

Calling Ellison a "famous comics dilettante" ain't gonna hurt his career none. Also "Duh."
