For musicians, I'd say you'd have to step back from the specifics of visual art. There's a couple good sections on creativity in general. Especially the existential step by step as to WHY we create art (altruism or selfishness).

Side note: reading this thread gave me a good chuckle. Again.

Back to thread: I've got the script for this story in development, but believe me, I'm on your side as to what was wrong with this book and hope to fix it in the live action film/pilot.

(Notice how many contractions I used!!)

"It’s essential reading for anyone in art, comics or any other creative field."

I find 'Understanding Comics' to be completely inessential for people entering into music.

With all due respect, Mr. Hoffer ... if you are in fact the man who wrote this book, then you probably aren't familiar with UNDERSTANDING COMICS either. That's just my admittedly ignorant opinion, of course.

Please enlighten us as to the "more glaringly obvious" problems that were missed. I thought most of the glaringly obvious ones were pointed out pretty well, leaving only the horribly-impossible-to-miss ones underexplained.

Still, you've gotten a comic published and I haven't. So kudos to you, Mr. Hoffer. Too bad it was this one.

Nice commentary guys. Cute. You missed some more glaringly obvious problems, but that's okay. You probably aren't familiar with "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud. It's essential reading for anyone in art, comics or any other creative field.

Can't believe I left those uncontracted sentences in there! lol

"I mean, with regard to the art, why does everyone have such a big head????"

See, this is in Image Comics' "realism" phase. They were often criticized for having characters whose (individual) breasts are bigger than their heads. Solution? Make the heads bigger! Realism achieved!

What about the cover logo itself? I thought the title was "Detective Five" from looking at the logo, even though that didn't seem quite right either.

But going to a rave with her mum?
Do they both pop pills and then spend the night on opposite sides of the rooms, or swap boyfriends or what???

I skipped commenting on the rave aspect of the comic, because I thought that just spoke for itself. When that's the first thing you read about a comic, the future does not bode well!

We also have no idea why the group is called “Objective Five.” What is the fifth objective? What are the first four?

Objective 5: Stop evil viruses an' stuff.
Objective 4: Go to raves!
Objective 3: Look sexy!
Objective 2: Do not using grammar real any.
Objective 1: Scare people away from comics forverer.

Perhaps the spread page is an after-effect of something she used on her way to the rave? ? It certainly looks like a bad trip.

Ears of an 80-year-old, indeed. And why do her pants look really shiny, as if they were made of plastic, in the next panel?

Take a look at both Alexis and Lark:

Which is which? You can’t tell, can you?

God, sometimes I can't believe you. The mom is obviously the one on the left, because her HAIR is LONGER, duh! The other one hasn't had time for her hair to grow that long, so she must be the daughter. Sheesh! It's like you don't even understand basics anatomy! That's science!

(Christ. I think this book made me sterile.)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go hurtle towards the nearest retirement home...

ps: I can forgive the huge head on the little kid because, well, little kids have big heads. But why does he have the ears of an 80-year-old man?
