Scott Shaw learned about the cancellation not from DC, but from a poster on his message board who'd read the news online. On the plus side, he subsequently stated that he's been reassured that the books will be published, once certain business issues are resolved.

I'm extremely annoyed about the cancellation of SSOSV and Suicide Squad and especially Jonah hex volume 2. If I recall correctly they're being replaced by more Superman, Worlds Finest and JLA showcases. That seems to suggest that DC want to concentrate on what it would percieve as their more mainstream output rather than the more off the wall stuff, which is a pity because the more outrageous showcases have been my favourites so far.
I hope someone clears up the reasons for the schedule change soon in any case

I was actually going to buy my first two Showcase collections based on those solicits: Suicide Squad (even though, yes, I already own them â€” a rare case of doubling up, not only for my own convenience, but because I'd lend out a Showcase version of SS but not the individual issues) and also Secret Society of Super-Villains. Alas.

I'm royally pissed about Suicide Squad getting cancelled, and I hope that it is either:

A.) Going to be resolicited.

B.) Was cancelled for a color collection instead.

Though I suspect it's more A than B. As long I get it in some capacity...

So their basically cancelling the Showcases collecting those comics that are available for less than a dollar an issue anyway? Except for Atomic Nights, maybe?

I don't think any of this was terrible material - And Suicide Squad was quite good. But I'd much rather see more expensive material from the sixties, fifties, and forties showcased.

I suspect a lot of interest in the Captain Carrot Showcase comes both from the upcoming Final Ark mini-series with Bill Morrison, and the simple fact that most Captain Carrot back issues have been allowed to fall into extremely poor shape. After all, it's not a series that's worth any money, even to its most die-hard fans. As a result, getting readable (let alone non-yellowed, undamaged) copies of any issue is growing increasingly difficult. While probably the least technically proficient of the Showcases canceled, I would say it's also the one where the material is most in need of being preserved via reprint.

I was going to buy all of those. Actually, I probably pre-ordered them all through my local store.
Why? Because I love the bizarre 70's and '80s stuff that DC occasionally has the good sense to collect, and these collections looked to be truly interesting. That, and they'd fill gaps in my collection. I have the Suicide Squad, but I wouldn't mind having it in Showcase format.

I was disappointed to see these cancelled, as the replacements aren't nearly as intriguing, with the exception of the Sgt Rock volume.

We'll just have to see if DC can find something else to make us happy.

Well, they're not downsizing the Showcases since each canceled volume is being replaced. We'll still get 2 a month for the rest of 2007. About the Archives, someone on the DC Message Boards who claims to be "in the know" says that there will be an Archive in February and that DC is currently evaluating their output of collected editions due to Archives, Showcases, Omnibuses and Chronicles. We'll see.

I am surprised to hear so much disappointment in the Captain Carrot collection, as I would not have expected much demand for it, the SSOV or the Great Disaster things (I read all of these in their originals, BTW, unless TGD was going to include the initial STRANGE ADVENTURES Knights series---the 70s reprints only there, but that's close enough for jazz---and not just the HERCULES UNBOUND issues). The Suicide Squad was an excellent comic on the other hand, and deserves a better, i.e., color, format. Speaking of that, perhaps somebody here can inform me on one point: I did once flip through a copy of ESSENTIAL DR. STRANGE VOL. 1, and it looked to me as if Marvel simply skipped the colorist stage, rather than add shading, etc., to make up for the lack. Was that an isolated incident, or do they all look like that? And what of DC's SHOWCASE collections, in that department? (I live WAY out in the boonies, and have for a few years now)

Along with this Showcase news, the slowdown in DC's Archive program has led to rumors of its cancellation. They seem to be reexamining and possibly downsizing their rerelease program. Does anyone have any facts about the situation?

I hear a lot of people saying that it's due to the royalties, but I had figured that they had worked things out when they solicited these collections to begin with. I believe Jonah Hex vol. 2 was also axed.

This is not a good thing. It may have something to do with the publication rights for the creators. As a STAUNCH DC fan, it makes me concerned that other publishers may capitalize on things like this.

Tom - Yes, it was to be the Ostrander/McDonnell series. And I was to be first in line to buy it.

Also Captain Carrot. I am not pleased by this development.
