Amazing Spider-Man #544 "One More Day" Part 1 - Review
- by Brian Cronin
- in Comic Reviews
This week marks the beginning of Marvel's "One More Day" storyline, the story that will be the end of writer J. Michael Straczynski's almost EIGHT year run on Amazing Spider-Man, the return of Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Joe Quesada, to sequential artwork, and is about a 92% certainty to be the end of the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.
So, with all this hype - how was it?
Well, it wasn't great.

First off, I was quite impressed with Quesada's artwork, for the most part. Was it a bit too stylized at times? Sure. Was said stylized artwork a bit of a detriment to some of the quieter, more somber scenes? Yeah.
But he more than made up for it with the power and dynamism of his artwork.
Here are some sample pages:

That is some strong action right there, and really, that was the clear highlight of the first part of the storyline, which had more plot progression than the previous issues of Back in Black, but mostly because this is the first time that the story was really ALLOWED to progress.
In retrospect, it probably wasn't a great idea to let loose that Aunt May's situation really wasn't going to change all through Back in Black, now was it?
In any event, at the end of last issue, Straczynski had this big thing about how Peter was now officially a criminal, because he abducted Aunt May from the hospital they were at, because the police were figuring out who he was (and in the resulting escape, he knocked out a cop). That particular story aspect seemed to basically be dropped in this issue, which was a bit strange, as that left Back in Black basically without a point.
A doctor tells Peter that unless he can raise some quick cash, Aunt May is in even bigger trouble than one would imagine a person in a coma would be in. So Peter decides to confront Iron Man, which is the main battle of the issue.
It was handled well enough, although it was kinda silly to expect the reader to even slightly think that Iron Man was not going to help Aunt May.
But then, fight's over, Aunt May gets some help, and Peter just...goes off.
That's it.
Not even, "I'm off to see Dr. Strange" or anything like that. He just takes off.
After a storyline in Back in Black where things basically held in a holding pattern for this big storyline, this was a bit light on plot. At least it DID move things forward. However, I think the story clearly reads as though it was originally intended to be released, on a weekly schedule. In that case, it is more reasonable to have a light plot for the first issue, as things will pick up quickly in the next issue.
With that weekly schedule now becoming a MONTHLY schedule, it reads a bit loose for a first part of a "MAJOR STORYLINE" (term trademarked, all rights reserved).
But Quesada's art sure looked nice, and the story DID progress a bit!
Overall, though, unless you really like Quesada's artwork, or if you're one of those fellows who cast a ballot in the Top 100 Marvel and DC characters vote for "Anyone who punches the **** out of Iron Man" (real vote), then this issue is quite skippable.
Not Recommended.

Hmmm, that art looks okay, but I'm really not keen on the inks. Who is that, Danny Miki? Palmiotti should give up writing sub-standard comic books and go back to being Joey Q's tracer. They fit well.

Ironicly enough last night I was looking at the cover Joey Q did for X-Factor #13 and after looking at that and this art work.I really am growing to dislike his style. His art just seem to be getting worse as time goes on and almost all the male characters he draws their faces look like Matt Murdoch's from his run with Kevin Smith on DD. Atleast,JMS is finally leaving Spider-Man maybe after he's gone I can finally come back to reading Spidey's main book(after more than a decade of crap(not just JMS'though)). Of course,if the next writer is just as bad I'll just have to stick with his Marvel Adventures book

And so begins what could easily be my last arc on the title.

Jed, I, too, was ready to blame Miki for the changes in the style, but at the end of the issue, they show a page from pencils to inks, and Miki really doesn't do that heavy of an inking job.

"But then, fight’s over, Aunt May gets some help, and Peter just…goes off.
That’s it.
Not even, “I’m off to see Dr. Strange†or anything like that. He just takes off. "
I'm a little confused, Peter clearly told the Doctor about how all sorts of things are possible "in his world" and we previously saw him going to a super-colleague for help. What more do you need?
You only know about Dr. Strange from the previews and bringing in that knowledge, is kind of cheating.
My beef, is the extra price of this issue for so little extra. The story was a tad longer, but when they add bio pages and call it extra content I always feel a little ripped off because I already buy most of the handbooks.

Definitely not a fan of Quesada's art.

That's my point, Ian. The only reason we have any reason to look forward to next issue is because we already KNOW about the Dr. Strange connection. Otherwise, the ending of this issue was simply, "Yeah, I'm going to go try SOMEthing else." That's not a great cliffhanger (although the drawing of Spidey swinging off was nice).
And yeah, the "extra" content was absurd.

Quesada's art reminds me a bit of Luke Ross's. You remember when Luke Ross was drawing Spider-Man just after the Clone Business?
_That_ was awesome.

It was rather underwhelming, but then this title has been that way since Back In Black started. Which I fully blame on editorial.

Quesada's art is really damned fugly.

What I don't understand is why, if he knows that he hasn't been able to meet a MONTHLY deadline in a decade, did Joe Quesada schedule himself for a weekly series across all of the Spider-Man titles? Was it just pure ego or what?
I'd ask him about it at a convention, but he'd probably just bring up the same old tired soundbyte that Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen were late too. Then I'd point out that nothing Quesada has ever been involved with will ever be even close to those titles and be ejected from said 'con.

What really impresses me is that the Editor-in-Chief (you know, the guy who is supposed to make things run smoothly) will be pretty much delaying one of the top Marvel franchises Big Relaunch just because he wanted to do the work by himself instead of assigning another artist. Marvel is gonna lose A LOT of money on that.
A more cynical poster could suggest that he is eying the fat royalties that such a hyped storyline will generate, particularly now, when we can be sure that it will be reprinted in TPB format for all eternity...
I don't care either way, but I sure want see J. Michael Strangler out of Spider-Man (and Thor, and Marvel, and COMICS! Go back to Hollywood, Straitor, it even PAYS more, for dog's sake!) as soon as possible. And knowing that the only thing separating me from a much-desired Dan Slott Spider-Man is the EiC slowness doesn't make it any easier.

I just wish I could actually be excited about "Brand New Day." I feel like an abuse victim at this point...even WITH Dan Slott's involvement, I'm actually dreading what's going to come next!
And the whole Spider-Man/Iron Man confrontation only reinforces the point I made in the FNSM review I wrote a coupla weeks back...it's just so contrived. I mean, why go to Stark, even if Peter thinks Tony should share some of the blame?
I guess it just wouldn't have been as "exciting" for him to turn to Danny Rand and go, "hey uh...a little help?" and the worst thing Danny does is strike his checkwriting stance.
Sigh...

If they wanted to do this weekly, why not get John Romita Jr.? Not only is he lighnting fast, he also drew a good portion of JMS's run and would therefore give a nice sense of closure.

I really liked your review. I pretty much agree with everything your saying. Hopefully things pick up for the next part of the story.

Most of the heat on this project comes FROM Quesada's attachment to it.

I would say most comes from all the hoopla around it, if it will mean an end to Peter and MJ's marriage and/or the (third!) death of Aunt May. Quesada could be far away from it and it would STILL be a "hot" project.

Hopping onto the artwork-hating bandwagon here with real alacrity. It's so clunkily stylised (in that top panel
the 'dramatic shadows' look more like Peter's mascara is running) that it feels more like lousy Batman art than lousy Spider-Man art.

Wow, that panel of Peter doing his elvis impression rules.
What a sack of crap. Joey Q finally gets his long-desired wish to get rid of Mary Jane, and he does it in the one way the readers can't argue away...
He clusterf'd the whole comic line to hell with the Civil War fest, turning the whole comic line into a "more realistic and gritty and EXTREME" crap tub of Red State/Blue State arguments...
and now he can use this "magic spell undo" as a reboot to RetCon the Civil War out of existence. Thereby regaining the readership who left when he turned a fascist drunk in a soup can into the Head of All Superheroes, murdering the icon of The Good America, Cap.
Who's gonna argue that?
And at the same time, he gets to undo MJ.

This was by far one of the most lacking and overrated issues I've seen in a while. Not only did the story contain very little significance to the arc as a whole, but I also had to pay extra for a "Spidey Biography" at the end. As he was swinging off at the end I kept asking myself, "This must be some kinda joke, and if not then that is the crappiest ending I've read in a looooong time." I'm a big Spidey fan, but this one gets a thumbs down.
