Thoughts on Baltimore Comic-Con News
- by Brian Cronin
- in Thoughts on
Both Marvel and DC had some interesting news at Baltimore Comic-Con (click here for Marvel's news and click here for DC's news), so let's take a look.
First off, the COOLEST news by far - Grant Morrison is staying on All Star Superman after Frank Quitely leaves! He's going to be doing a series of one-shot stories with different artists.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwesome.
Dwayne McDuffie is apparently bringing Firestorm to the Justice League. I don't mind this, as it is basically the same thing that Gerry Conway did with the character back when he was on the title, and it worked out well enough back then (and to be frank, Jason is probably a bit more interesting than Ronnie).
Secret Invasion is a cool name for the Marvel Skrull crossover.
Ant-Man being added to Avengers: Initiative is a good idea. Isn't it funny to hear on the same day of a DC canceled solo hero being added to a team book AND a Marvel canceled solo hero being added to a team book? Weird.
Chuck Dixon back on Robin? That is good news. He never should have left in the first place (although I would probably have left, too, if I was in the same situation)!
Good take on Tony Stark by Tom Brevoort - "I think Iron Man's a more fascinating character. The thing that's always made Tony Stark special is that he's a guy who, when he believes in what he's doing, will go against everyone else. What makes him heroic is that he does it, he carry that weight for the greater good." Sure DOES sound like the same dude who did Armor Wars, no?
CB Cebulski's talent search is still on - check it out at his blog here.
Peter Tomasi on Green Lantern Corps AND Nightwing? Wow, they sure are showing some confidence in Tomasi, eh? I mean, he's been Morrison's editor, so I trust the guy, but this is like going from 0 to 60 in 10 seconds.
Great line by Ron Marz here -
An audience member thanked the panel for making Kyle Rayner Parallax because he hated the character so much. "You know he's not real, right?" Marz said. "I made him up."
Marz also gets bonus points for saying the book he'd like to see given the Absolute treatment was All Star Superman.
Dan Didio becoming the editor on Teen Titans is really weird.
Hmmm...not as much news as I first thought, I think I was just so excited over the "more Morrison on All Star Superman" news that I didn't note how fairly blah the rest of the news was
(the Dixon on Robin news was cool, though!).
What do you folks think of the convention news?

Wait, Didio's editing Titans directly? FUCK. No chance of that book being any fun now.

Also, you forgot (or maybe just haven't seen yet) Aragones on The Spirit.

am i the only one who would rather have rucka back on nightwing and tomosi on robin?
while i generally liked rucka work in the bat books, his nightwing was the best. his robin seemed like an after thought to this (even though it came first).

The original Firestorm was Conway's pet character, and the beginning of the end on that volume of JLA. Not saying there weren't any great stories after that point, but he was always the first character added to the team that I never really felt belonged there. Maybe it was just that he was the first new character not voted in by fans, or maybe it was his complicated concept (when all the other characters were fairly simple), but I've always put him on the same end of the scale as the Detroit League, Nuklon, and Bloodwynd, to name some more extreme examples. The "what are these people doing here?" end.
That said, I don't really care if McDuffie wants to add him to his League, since the last 6 or 7 years have killed any interest I had in the Justice League (and I had a lot!).

Sadly, I've read through all the various coverages and transcripts of the DC and Marvel panels and the only news that actually excited me was the confirmation from DC that BLUE BEETLE is doing well enough and has enough support from DC Editorial to stay around for the foreseeable future. I'm glad to hear that.
I am interested in seeing Firestorm on JLA, and Aragones on SPIRIT could be really cool too. I'd still like to know who the artist is though...
Didio as the editor on Teen Titans is a bit weird to me too. The book is okay, but what about it causes the EiC to personally want to edit it? And why does that worry me...?

Can someone confirm that Warren Ellis is exclusive to Marvel? - that doesn't make sense since he's doing Black
Summer and Doktor Sleepless for Avatar.
- if there's a clause that allows him to work for
Avatar, why wouldn't the same clause allow him
to finish off Planetary and continue with
Desolation Jones?
My life-long dream of seeing Morrison re-team with Richard Case to do a another volume of Vertigo's DOOM PATROL has been crushed and destroyed.
I'm SOOOO depressed with DC that EX MACHINA and 100 BULLETS will probably be my last titles from them. Anything else is hardly worthwhile reading.

Tom- Yes. Ellis can finish Planetary and continue Desolation Jones under his Marvel contract. He sent an email out today confirming Desolation Jones's continuation. Planetary's last issue has been in the pipeline for a while.

That was me, regarding Ellis.
I'd like to add, less anonymously, that the idea of Aragones on the Spirit is a complete and very welcome surprise. I may stick with that book yet.

More Morrison Superman is awesome, especially done-in-ones with rotating artists. It sounds like the sort of thing that will work to Morrison's strengths perfectly.
Dixon on Robin might be enough to get me picking up that book again, too. The rest of the announcements were kinda meh, but c'mon- this is roughly the one millionth convention from the last few months, and there's still more announcements to come anyway.

Are we talking about Sergio Aragones of Groo on the Spirit? If so - interesting match-up there.
Well, let's add Desolation Jones and Planetary to 100 Bullets and Ex Machina list.

Yep, that's the one. He's just writing- no announcement about the artist yet.

Ellis's comments seem to indicate that Dan DiDio has absolutely no idea how Wildstorm works to start with.

Is Zezelj still the artist on Jones?
Tom Fitzpatrick

To Astheimer:
I sure hope so!!!
At least 'til the end of the story arc (which is # 12, I think).

"Ellis’s comments seem to indicate that Dan DiDio has absolutely no idea how Wildstorm works to start with."
What comments would those be, Dave?

Did I read correctly (elsewhere) that John Severin will be the regular artist on Sergio Aragones' Batlash? That combination is easily my favorite news of the con!

Severin is indeed the Bat Lash artist, but that's not NEW news. In fact, he was announced as the book's artist last December.

Actually, looking back through the report of the DC Panel, I'll add that I'm also excited at the potential return of James Robinson and Starman. A new mini or graphic novel would be awesome. And I would totally shill out the money for an Absolute Edition...

Ellis's comments are here. Rereading them, I realize that he said DiDio actually had no idea what the specifics of his deal with Marvel was. However, given how they've handled the WSU for the past year, it's not too much of a stretch to guess that somebody at DC is clueless as to how to handle the line.

I presume you meant Dixon instead of Rucka, right?
In which case, I totally agree with you, but if I can't have that, I'd gladly settle for this.

By the by, may I add my amusement at how "exclusive contract" has basically come to mean "you can't work for Marvel" if you are at DC and "you can't work for DC" if you are at Marvel.
It seems like basically everything else is wide open!
Brian Cronin

Yeah, it DOES sound pretty darn weird, doesn't it?
Perhaps he just feels a bit detached from the comic line, and when an opening arose at Teen Titans, he thought it would be fun to fill it himself.
Brian Cronin

Absolutely!
It should be so cool - I bet we see one from Cam Stewart!!

Thats basically what it has always meant.

I have no desire to read Jonah Hex but I can't wait for Bat Lash.
I'd rather see Nicieza or maybe Weir and Defillips on Nightwing but it could be a lot worse.

Don't under-estimate Aragones-- He has done a lot more in comics than just Groo, even though that may be what he is most famous for.
He did co-create Bat Lash after all, and worked on a number of Western comics for DC in the late 60s or early 70s.

Just announced: the Titans East oneshot will lead to a new Titans series starring Nightwing, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy. Shooter back on the Legion, Aragones back on Bat Lash, Dixon back on Robin, the '80s Titans reformed... everything old really is new again.

But as Ellis says in the post, it's not Dido's job to know about Wildstorm - it's got an entirely different editorial team.
He'd probably be as clueless about Vertigo and Minx and anything to do with Manga publishing as well - it's not his department.

Wow, that is amazing - is Wolfman going to be writing the Titans series? That would cinch it right there!
Rohan Williams
September 11, 2007 at 5:57 am
Actually, people seem to be assuming Winnick will write the Titans series, because he's doing the Titans East one-shot.
But with Tomasi replacing Wolfman on Nightwing, it would seem to work out schedule-wise, and he's also just coming off writing the screenplay for the Judas Contract animated movie, so it's not like he'd really need to jog his memory of the characters. If they really wanted the fanboy dollar- and why the heck else would they field that roster- they'd get Wolfman, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.
Interesting and irrelevant story, re: Marv Wolfman that you may or may not already know. He ran a fanzine with Gene Simmons when they were kids (or so Gene's said in interviews, anyway)!

Incidentally, if that Titans series is successful, I wonder if Donna and Wally will join the team after events in their own 'lives' slow down a bit?
