Thats what I thought. He was a cop in the Ultimate U and in the movie, but not in the original incarnation.

During Slott's run on She-Hulk he presented the great idea of WHY Thanos was obsessed with death... and then proceeded to take it away in the next issue. Granted Thanos' obsession doesn't really need explanation, but I thought it helped a bit to show us how powerful his motivation is. (not to mention it added something interesting to Starfox)

Whoever wrote that description on the Punisher got some stuff wrong, he was never a cop in the 616 universe.

If you don't think Thanos was ever a threat, then I suggest you pick up the trades of the Infinity Gauntlet & Infinity war. I advise trying to read the Silver Surfer stories preceeding the series. Also, there was a major cosmic war against Thanos involving Captain Marvel & The Avengers in the early 80's I'm not sure of the storyline title, or if it's in one trade, but it's worth liiking in to. No, he's pretty much always been a big threat.

Who's Iron fist?

I haven't seen Thanos that much but he always seemed like a bit of a wannabe to me. Built up as a big threat, but not really up to the task.

Finally, some sanity returns to the Marvel list. Castle and Thanos would both have been in my next 5-10. The main reason Thanos miss is that no one other than Starlin really seems to know what to do with him (same reason Warlock didn't make my top 10). Walters and Frost are both great characters, too.

I thought the Punisher was a marine who had just planned on becoming a cop. Regardless, its still good to see such a complex character make it into the upper half of the list.

If memory serves, Jae Lee did some awesome art with Iron Fist in the NAMOR series.

I forgot about She-Hulk. She was a member if the FF during the years I had a subscription to the title. Fun stuff.

Really interesting group, this. I also had thought the Punisher would be higher, but on reflection...he's about where he should be. This is a strong character but not one who is, nor should be, universally admired.

I didn't vote for Emma, but personally I liked her best in Generation X. Where, among other qualities, she usually wore proper clothes. Admittedly a lot of the time when I say 'proper clothes' I mean 'like Emma Peel, but bleached', but that's half the awesome.

Agreed.Objective disagreement is one thing.But "Those characters sux" type comments really are worthless. Personally,I think Emma's been top notch in material like Astonishing. Iron Fist's new series is one of the best books Marvel is putting out now.And I'm not even a big fan. Thanos works as either a driven villain or anti-hero of sorts.

If yyou think your picks are all that, and someone elses aint, then tour the glories and virtues of yout picks. Don't spout endless nonsence of "yours sucks". Obviously, you feel that way, else you'd have voted for mine. If your picks are that much better, then explain why. Convince the rest of the world why your picks are great. Engage in intelligent dialogue rahter than imbecilic, unjustified hate.

State you case, then provide the evidence.

Unless it's about Gambit. He just plain sucks.

Iron fist? I have never read one issue featuring Iron Fist that didn't suck butt.
She-hulk? What kind of b-list fest is this?
White Queen-take her out of her slut costume and nobody cares.
Thanos was cool--once.

Out of curiousity, what's the break-down of hero to villian in this poll. I'd bet the DC list is dominated by Bat-villians.

Thanos has been a more compelling character than Darkseid for quite some time now,in my opinion.The latter having been too often portrayed as a Superman style villain.As opposed to his classic distant tone.Thanos has been a nicely portrayed character with an interesting,fresh mindset.

Happy to see so many others appreciate Emma Frost.She's one of the most complex and conflicted X characters.And enjoyable both as a Hellfire Club villain and reluctant heroine.I love the inner side of her in how she can be selfish.Yet also torn by emotion and protective,or even regretful,about her students,feelings,or past.

I'm not surprised to see that Thanos managed to beat out Darkseid. He's a clear homage/knockoff, but Darkseid hasn't gotten to do much since the 80's, while Thanos was big news for a good while. Becoming God does wonders for one's reputation. Thanos also has the tragic element to his character, his unrequited love for Death, that Darkseid lacks.
