A bit of blog housekeeping

Okay, as you may or may not know, we get a whole pile of spam at this here blog. Tons of it. It is probably actually a GOOD thing, as it is usually a sign that you have a goodly amount of traffic, bust still...over 2,500 spam comments just YESTERDAY alone!! And because of that, we have a good spam blocker, but one that apparently occasionally catches a legitimate comment here and there. I will gladly bring your comments back, but wading through 5,000 comments (50 per page) is just too much darn work when I find perhaps three good comments per 1,000 spam comments (less, usually). So here's what we'll do. If you make a comment and it doesn't show up on the site, send me an e-mail right away (bcronin@comicbookresources.com). That way I will know WHEN your comment was made. With that information, I can actually find your needle in the spam haystack.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

The only time I had one fall into the spam blocker was when I posted a link. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Multiple hyperlinks usually get a post moderated, this is true.

But it won't be tagged as spam, usually.

If a post is moderated, that's actually much better, as only about 5-10 posts get moderated a day, so I can bring them back quite easily.

Jeez, I didn't realize just how much spam you get. Thanks for taking the time to make the blog nice and clean.

It's weird. Before the last upgrade, we all (well, everyone with posting privs) could searchthough/empty the spam filter. And now we can't, and Conin's stuck with all the work.

What about one of those texty-image doolollies? I forget what they're called (obviously). You know, where they have a weird image and you have to type in the text that appears in the image to post? Anyway, another blog I frequent just uses the same text over and over again in slightly different images and that cuts down spam a lot.

I just think it sucks that you have to wade through spam just to have your blog the way you want it. Stupid, stupid, spammers!

Right, but if you recall, that way we could only search the last 150 spam comments.

With the amount we get, that isn't enough - so I switched to the new one, which lets me search through all the spam comments over the last 15 days.

So while this is a bit more tedious, I prefer it to the old way, which was less tedious, but missed more good comments.

Let me echo the thanks for going through all that tedium!

I think the current system works well enough. Six good comments stuck per 2,000 spam comments is good, I think.

Not worth inconveniencing EVERYone over it.

Agreed. Damn spammers!!!

I respect the fact that you've come up with your own solution to your missing comment dilemma and that you don't wish to inconvenience your readers at all, but I'm going to belabor the point with just one additional post in case you'd like another solution for later on. :)

CAPTCHA is the word I was trying to think of. So basically there would be one additional field everyone would have to fill out in order to post but it would be the exact same thing every time (like "CSBG" instead of "d20"). So that's no more inconvenient than entering a name and e-mail every time.

Since you're the one with the blog, I'm sure you already know about this sort of thing. And maybe implementing the thing would be more time and energy than it's worth. But I just thought I'd post again since I remembered this thing I read a couple months ago and thought it might make your blogging life easier.

Wow, that's alot of spam. Thank you for this continued service! Easily my favourite blog on the web.
