The two biggest surprises for me thus far: Black Panther is that low on the list (especially with four first-place votes), and Nova — freakin’ NOVA? — is that high.

Nova — freakin’ NOVA? — is that high.
There’s bound to be at least one character on each list that makes somebody go “really?” I agree with you, Nova is that one so far for me on the Marvel list. I know he had fans, but I guess Annihilation has done wonders for reviving interest in him…

It’s so sad that Jameson could only come in 48th. he’s really one of Marvel’s top 5 or so.

Nova has definitely been my “Him?” character so far on this list, but Iron Fist is a close second. Granted, if I was doing a “Top Ten Marvel Characters Right Now” list Iron Fist would be in there. But as a 20+ year reader he doesn’t beat out those childhood favorites. And I’m surprised he beat Luke Cage.

When I was a kid, comics were a bite-sized treat. The stories that I had that went beyond one issue (or in some half or a quarter of an issue) were an Outsider / Teen Titans crossover where Dick Greyson yells at Batman, “I’m not going to lose this just because you like to be in charge” and an earlier Spiderman / Nova crossover murder mystery.
When he showed up in New Warriors as Kid Nova, I was one of the people saying that you shouldn’t add “Kid” to the front of the name unless it is a new guy with similiar powers. To me, this was like bringing Barry back and calling him Kid Flash. Except worse because there was no Wally using the name.

If this poll was done before Annhiliation I don’t think Nova would have placed so high, let alone place. You can tie a lot of rankings to recent books or stories (Madrox, Nova) or one highly-beloved run (Ulatimate Spider-Man).
Whats also interesting are the placing of characters like Thanos, who save for standing around and not doing much in Annhiliation, hasn’t done anything substantial in years.

X-Men left to rank: Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Cyclops. I highly doubt we’ll see anyone else. We’ve already had the big guns: Rogue, Gambit, Jean Grey, Storm, Iceman, Kitty Pryde and Beast. Unless Magneto makes an appearance I guess. Interesting to see certain characters rise up and fall depending on stories.
Last year in the top 50 X-Men poll Rogue placed much higher (her exposure in Carey’s book was at a peak) and Jean Grey was also higher (the longer she’s dead and the more cracks the editors make about her “revolving door of life” the more her popularity will decline).
Obviously Madrox and Deadpool had a recent popularity boost due to their books.
The big guns we’re still waiting for: Thor, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, The Thing, Daredevil and Hulk. With the 3 big X-Men left, thats eleven more characters. Who are the other four I’m missing?
Wanda? Doom? Ghost Rider? Elektra?

So, Spider-Man, Captain America, Thing, Daredevil, and Professor X are the top 5?

Gambit is a big gun ahead of characters like Banshee, Havok & Polaris? I don’t think so!

Actually I think Thing is off the list, it’ll be Spider-Man, Cap, DD, X and Doom.

I’m guessing… Spider-Man, Captain America, Doctor Doom, The Thing and Daredevil.
Really surprising some of the characters who never made it all…I’d love to see which characters managed to just miss the top 50.
And where on earth is Sleepwalker?!

“Obviously Madrox and Deadpool had a recent popularity boost due to their books.”
I disagree; the reason Deadpool keeps having a book is because he has a strong vocal cult following, especially on the Internet.

Well, Nova was the “Spider-Man” for those who were kids on the ’70s (like me). And since most super-hero readers today were kids on the 70s, it’s no surprise the character is popular.
I really liked the guy when I was young – and he got a good series now (and it was about time after so many failures!).
Best,

That’s my guess too, though I’m shocked that there’s been no Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, Ghost Rider, Elektra, or Moon Knight. And what’s with Dazzler not making the list?! Or my cult favorite- Longshot?
I mean, really, Nova?! Adam Warlock?!

The ones I miss most on the list are Hercules,Loki,& Valkyrie.
Herc because he makes whatever comic he’s in that much more fun to read.
Loki because he’s such a great foil for Thor. The interpersonal relationship between the Brothers, and their Father Odin,is something very neat when it’s well player on(like in Loki’s mini series or Son of Asgard.)
Valkyrie because of consistent high quality she tends to exude.Save her one shot, which wasn’t terribly thought out, she’s a positive in just about every book she’s taken adequate part in.
I might have considered casting for Union Jack or even Spitfire if the Marvel field weren’t so full of good characters.I quite liked Jack’s mini and very much enjoyed the classic Invaders series. But I knew neither would make it.
I’m a tad surprised Spider-Woman(Jessica Drew)didn’t make it,actually.

Longshot has always been a favorite of mine as well, and made my list. I think it has a lot to do with Art Adams’ art.
Herc would have made my 11-20.

The biggest surprise to me was Adam Warlock even being on the list, and specially ranking ahead of Rogue, Iceman, The Human Torch, etc. I’m not that surprised by Nova and Madrox being that high, due to their recent popularity.
I also find interesting that, while being #2 on the top 50 X-men, Rogue was only the 10th here, and she didn’t even made the top 10 if you count Magneto as an X-man. I’m thinking that she got much more votes on the X-men one due to Mike Carey’s run, which made her an awesome character again, but is not being read by many people who do not follow X-men usually.

Most surprised at the absence of Spider-Woman and Elektra. Also thought Moon Knight and Ghost Rider would show up.
And it’s weird that Deadpool ranked so high when Cable didn’t make the list at all. I’d have thought Cable was the more popular (I guess that he was long, long ago).
I also thought Wolvie would make the top 5. Even if people are sick of him now, he was so great back in the day…
Final five:
1.Spidey
2.Daredevil
3.Cap
4.Thing
5.Doom
No Professor X either. Poor Chuck.

I just realised there is no MODOK on the list! How can that be?? Is he in the Top5 or really not that popular??

Captain America getting offed probably means a huge boost.
Spiderman is just great.
Can’t believe Black Bolt didn’t get in. Even more unwilling to believe that Prof X isn’t in. Also, boo for no Sentry.
I think one of the DDs might not make it.

Ok… Spidey is one, Captain America is two, im guessing Daredevil and Doctor Doom. Where is the Red Skull in all of this… Or the classic villains Doc Oc and Sandman… Venom/Scorpion… Goblin. There are a lot of holes but I guess the best way to make the list is to start from #1 and go down rather than #50 up. I wonder where Optimus Prime would rank if admitted to this list.

Gambit did fairly well for a 90′s character that hasn’t been written worth a damn for a decade.

I don’t understand you folks here. Cyclops at 10, yet Galactus tied with Colossus at 31???
