Here are the POINT totals for the top four...
1. 2507 points
2. 1316 points
3. 1275 points
4. 1091 points
As you can see, the race for second place got a lot more interesting than one would expect...

Okay, now I'm interested in DC again. Is Bats that much more popular than Supes?

Hmm. "The race ... " suggests a Flash in the top three. Did Wally give Kal-El a run for his money?
Hey Brian, I've been thinking about you and this poll over the past couple weeks — how much work it must've been to tally all the results, but how much fun it must've been as well — and how, as much as I've enjoyed guessing along about rankings, you're probably having an even bigger blast knowing who comes next and listening to everyone try to handicap the races. It's kinda like — gee, I dunno — being one of the few accountants at PriceWaterhouse who know the names inside the Academy Award envelopes before everyone else. (For comics geeks, at least.)
Also, aren't you pleased as punch to think that major movers & shakers at DC & Marvel are also playing along and guessing the results too? I bet CSBG is a real water-cooler topic these days. Congrats!
(Also, an aside "thanks!" to fellow poster Danar for his interpretive numbers-crunching after the fact, which has also been fun to read.)
I'd love to read an entry by you after it's all over, any sort of redux observations you're inclined to give. But my more fervent request is this: Will you make this an annual event? These stats are a blast, yet they'll really have some heft if we can chart popularity annually for a few years.

What Rebis said, totally. I've had an awful lot of fun over these past few weeks.

Wow. I knew the top of the list was going to be high, but that's really high. We're talking about almost 300 points between #4 and Joker, another 180 points between #3 and #4, and 1200 points higher for #1.
#1 got over 12% of all the points of the top 50.
#1 got 8% of all the possible points for DC ballots!
#1 is as popular as #2 and #3 put together.
#1 through #5 combined are as popular as #6 (Nightwing) through #21 (AnimalMan/Hawkman) combined. Or #20 (Lex Luthor) through #50 (Huntress) combined.
#1 through #5 combined received 35% of all the points of the top 50 and 22% of all possible points for DC ballots.
The top 50 characters received only 65% of the possible poitns for DC ballots (leaving 35% for people with 143 points or lower.

Oh, and one more stat for you. Marvel has 264 1st places already registered. DC has only 210. That leaves 50%-60% of the 1st place votes left. Some will be for characters that didn't make the top 50 (like both of my top picks), but I'm sure the rest account for the high scores of the top 4.

Danar, I've loved all the stats you cooked up. Maybe when this is all over you give us a percentage of people who used the term "everyman" in the explanation of their #1 choice. If I never read that word again it'll be too soon. Heck, I even used it. In the negative, mind you ...

Brian, did I read somewhere earlier you might also post a list of all the votes? I'm sure everyone would like to see how all their favorites ranked.

Yeah. I'm starting to become mildly obsessed with where Ghost Rider placed. The sad part is, I don't even like him.
Seriously...as someone else suggested, it'd be really neat to see the totals for Nos. 51-60, at least.

Holy giant point gap!
Batman is that popular!

Assuming, of course, that it's Batman.

What? no Lois Lane I turn black for my stories or Jimmy I cross dress for mine??
my money is on
4. Wally West/Barry Allen tie
3. Lois Lane
2. Superman/Clark Kent
1. Batman

I all depends on whether Cronin counted votes for B'wanna Beast and Freedom Beast as separate characters or not.

Hey, Ninjawookie, Barry Allen already placed. Plus, there's no way Lois Lane would be in the top five and Hal Jordan wouldn't make top 50. It'll be:
4 - Wally West
3 - Hal Jordan
2 - Supes
1 - Michael Keaton

Actually #1 will be Christian Bale.
And #2 and 3 are so close in points that it really could go either way. Not even the best psychohistorian can predict something that's within 5 or so votes.
Also, Brian- you're such a tease

The way the list is released, Chris, folks would not appreciate truly how close #2 and #3 are, so I figured I'd spotlight it beforehand.
But yes, it is a bit of a tease.

but you couldn't do it for Marvel too?
and actually the next silly stats i'm working on is the number of #1 votes people got and who the highest ranked character without a single #1 vote was.

It's gotta be Bats in the primo slot. It should be Supes, but it'll be the Bat. *sigh*

I am going to assume that Superman (my #1) and Batman (my #6) are safely within the top four, but really doubt my other picks Cliff Steele (my #4), Hourman (Rex) (my #5), Mister Freeze (my #7), and Crazy Jane (my #9) made it in. Martian Manhunter (my #3), Jay Garrick Flash (my #2) and Booster Gold (my #8) already got in.
However, I wouldn't doubt Harley Quinn (my #10) still has a good chance for the top four.

Voting for Superman is like voting for U.S. Steel.

Batman had almost as much votes as #2 and #3? Wow, i was expecting him to win with some ease, but not that much.

If OMAC came in with a surprise win, I might actually weep for joy.
If Superman didn't make the list, I might actually weep for joy. (I don't hate Superman, I just think he's usually kind of boring.)
Either way, I haven't bothered stocking up on Kleenex.
On another note, I'm surprised that no Fables characters made it - everyone (including me) seems to love that book - but did anyone but me vote for any of them? (I had Bigby at 4 and Snow at 8.)

Superman's boring, Tyson? What comics have you read with him in them?

September 27, 2007 at 8:46 am
Wow. I really hope that Superman doesn't get kicked out of the top 2. I already think it is nuts that some of those characters beat Wonder Woman, but honestly, how can you argue with Superman and Batman as 1 and 2 (in whichever order)? Especially because I think that Hal Jordan (outside of the New Frontier) is by far the most boring Green Lantern anc current Justice Leaguer.

No surprise that Batman is that popular.
And considering the tease, no surprise Wally West on the top 2.
