I actually don't have a problem with Batman wearing armor. He's gotta guard sometimes, right? And how about in the event of an explosion?

The Azbats armor was just stupid. And ugly.

The Russian wasn't a cross-dresser, his head was grafted onto a woman's body. And that was in the story after 'Welcome Back Frank' ('Army of One'? not sure).

I agree with Dale. That was the period where I slowly but surely moved away from the straight heroes, buying basically just Vertigos and back issues. I stuck with the FF and a few others out of nostalgia more than anything, until the whole Heroes Reborn thing. Then I lost interest fast and have never really gone back.

Come now, Spider-Man wore an armored costume for like 9 pages of one issue. Even he remarked how stupid it was.

I was working in a comic shop around that time (91-94) and my god was that an abysmal period for mainstream comics. It was an era high on gimmicks, multiple covers, holographic covers, and storylines practically devoid of substance. Superman was killed, Batman's back was broken, Hal Jordan snapped and became a mass murderer,and Spiderman and Daredevil were given armored costumes. The only saving grace for me comics wise was Sandman, Ennis's run on Hellblazer, Eightball, and Hate. There were other runs that were good too but these are the titles that stick out as being superior examples of the medium amongst a sea of drek. And it was an especially good period for the black and white indies.

Well, it wasn't Batman, it was Azrael acting as Bats after Bruce had his back broken. And since he's not the badass Bruce is, he needed armour. (That and the years of subconscious conditioning. Whatever).
Buthey, someone thought Spider-Man needed armor... how's THAT for not making sense?

I was like 10 when the AzBats costume appeared. I maintain that both AzBats and Azrael were totally awesome, although I haven't seen either of them since I was about 13.

Ah, the 90s. The best of times, the worst of times. I started collecting back then too, and like everyone else, got excited over chromium and holofoil. Oh my...I even have multiple (unopened) copies of Liefeld's X-Force #1.
Interesting fact abt Joe Q too. I loved that AzBats costume. Wasn't practical at all, but that doesn't matter - as long as it looks cool.
