Top 100 DC Characters #56-60
Still more...
56. Superboy (Conner Kent) - 128 points (2 first place votes)

Here is why Michael Smith picked him...
Why did I vote for Superboy as my #1? Honestly it was Superboy(The Kid, Kon-el, Conner Kent.) that brought me back into comics after many years of having been away. What did I like about him? Kon was one of the very few superheros that actually reveled in his identity, he was very young, boastful, brash, and cocky. All these things made him amusing and endearing in my eyes.
I have been very happy to watch him evolve over the years since he has been introduced. From Hawaii, to Cadmus, Young Justice and the Teen Titans I have followed him through it all (though the less said about his time as a super in Suicide Slum the better.).
He kind of grew up along with me, which why it was so sad to see him go in the recent Infinite Crisis. I certainly keep hope out that DC will reverse this current intolerable state of affairs. Despite that setback, or perhaps because of it, nothing will stop me from going back to my comic collection and perusing my favorite Kon stories over and over again.
57. Sandman (Wesley Dodds) - 125 points (3 first place votes)

58. Supergirl (Kara) - 124 points (2 first place votes)

59. Wildcat (Ted Grant) - 118 points (4 first place votes)

60. Brainiac Five (83 (1) original, 21 (1) first reboot, 7 second reboot) - 111 points (2 first place votes)

Surprised Brainiac 5 registered so low (though I forgot about him for my list...and maybe that's the point).

Well, of the 5 of my DC picks that didn't make the top 10--I siad I wa smost surprised by Sandman (Wes Dodds) not making it--well here he is at #57. I didn't pick him because of SMT, but due to Roy Thomas. OF course I did buy SMT--it was the last comic I bought on a regular basis.
Wildcat got consideration for my list as well.

I'm gonna be the one to say it -
Brainiac 5 was that high? Really?
I don't get the Legion at all.

Oh lord, Wesley Dodds! How did I possibly forget Wesley Dodds?! What a wonderful series that was. Dian Belmont was a great supporting character too.

Brainiac 5 is an exceptional character. It's a bit sad that he ranked this low but its good to see that at least 111 people rate the guy.

Brainiac 5 was that high? Really?
Why should that be surprising? He's easily the most compelling and fascinating character in the Legion: Reed Richards' intellect without the cuddly-wuddly family aspect, the ultimate expression in comics of scientist-as-hero. He's the biggest gun on the team, the most powerful, the potentially-scariest, and he doesn't have any superpowers. He's Batman with different motivations, Dr. Doom if Doom were a good guy.
People talk about Mon-El and the founding three all the time when they talk about the Legion, but for my money, the one absolutely necessary character for the Legion is Brainy. The Legion has shown through its publishing history that it can do quite well without any character on the team and still be entertaining except for Brainy. He's the glue of the concept.

Huh. Okay. I've only read a few Legion comics, and in most of them he just seems like a stereotypical "smart leader" guy. But like I said, I've never really found the appeal in the Legion. So it might just be me.
