I love the idea from that issue of Rick Jones using his new powers to manifest the golden age Marvel heroes.

The Black Knight beat the Kingpin?
That's staggering.

I always thought that Black Knight was a bit....well silly (I know most soopaheroes would look daft in reality but I'm refering to the Marvel Universe). Sort of King Arthury but in the modern era ... kind of a sloppy premise, too easy. He never looked right to me in the Avengers next to the main blokes like Cap and Co. Kind of like a Model T sitting on a Formula 1 grid....nostalgia value but he was never going to do the serious ass-whuppin'.
If I was falling from a skyscraper or being accosted by laser weilding super thugs and saw the Black Knight coming to my aid I'd be grateful, but something at the back of my mind would still be saying "oh Crap, why couldn't it be Thor" if you know what I mean. Being rescued by the Black Knight ain't gonna impress anybody, it has to be an immortal or other suitable A-Stringer or you couldn't have bragging rights at parties.....actually I just thought....I want She-Hulk to rescue me now (sigh)..or better yey squirrel girl! Still the Black Knight does have a magic sword.

My dream for my Black Knight pitch was to put him on the level where he'd make this kind of list.
It was surprisingly easy to put him in a position where I could see that happening.

Mr. Sinister?
Mr Sinister?.
No way. The others are okay (though I'm amused by the thought of Rick Jones being someone's favorite character), but Mr. Sinister seems like the acme of lame, ill-defined X-Men villain to me.

Which, I'm guessing, is why he's so beloved. The less defined he is, the more freedom the fan has to imagine him however they want to.
Also, I'm figuring that this thing got a lot of votes from pubescent kids. And, as we all know, nobody has any taste at 13.

Pete Milligan's Further adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix says otherwise on the 'Sinister is lame' argument.
Let's face it, the X-men's rogues gallery isn't huge and he's a whole lot better than Sublime, the U-men, Supreme pontiff, belasco, Stryfe, Arkon, Fenris, Cameron Hodge....need I go on?

No, he's not better than Sublime or the U-Men.
And the X-Men have one of the largest rogue's galleries of all:
Magneto
Mystique
Apocalypse
Juggernaut
Nimrod
The Hellfire Club
Sentinels
Sabretooth
Mojo
The Phalanx
The Brood
Cassandra Nova
The whole damn Brotherhood
Bigoted humans
I don't think I need to keep going...

Finally we see Black Knight! What the hell is wrong with those of you who didn't vote for Dane?!?
I'm shocked and amazed (is that redundant?) that Mr. Sinister beat Kingpin. Mind you, I like Mr. Sinister just fine (Gambit too), but I can't believe he beat out Kingpin.
Hell, I can think of about 20 villains I can't believe he beat out.

Arkon is a better character than Mr. Sinister

I'm still surprised Quiksilver had a series once, just look at how unpopular he is.

I was going to note my bamboozlement at Sinister getting any votes at all, but then that cover took me back to excitedly buying that issue when I was 12. In retrospect, yeah, he sucks, but when you're young and stupid...

I'm surprised Quicksilver cracked the top 100. His history is just such a mess and he has very rarely, if ever, been heroic or fun. Don't get me wrong, I like his current place and the use of him recently, but I would never think of him as one of my favorite characters.

Yay Quicksilver and Black Knight!!!
I mean, Quicksilver has been handled especially well by Peter David. I loved reading about hm when I was a kid. Me and my sisters would read the Vision and Scarlet Witch limited series when we were kids, and we always felt so bad for Pietro having a wife like Crystal.
And sure, I can see what you mean about the Black Knight not being one of the heavy hitters in Hulk or Cap's league, but he did spend a lot of time with the Avengers. He's a competant guy, who had some really neat stories like that whole Sersi/Procter thing.
I voted for him.

Woo hoo!
Somebody said they like the Gatherers story!
That makes two of us, then.

As far as useless, teenage tag-a-long characters go, I guess Rick Jones is one of the best. Still hard to believe he beat out Kingpin.

Make that 3 Chris. I thought the gatherers run rocked! Black Knight was my #2

I don't think some of you realize just how spooky Sinister was for a kid growing up in the late 80s early 90s.
I love Dane but I couldn't tell you why.

I was born in 85, so I think I qualify for that. I didn't find him spooky at all. He looked like a transvestite and his crew was populated with guys who had extra-long eyelashes and stuff.
So, do you like him because of how you felt about him at 10?

Glad to see Kingpin FINALLY up here, but I can't BELIEVE this great villain was beaten by the likes of Venom, Mr. Sinister and MODOK!

Finally! Rick Friggin Jones! Great character. Anyone who has hung out with Cap, Rom, and two versions of Captain Marvel, not to mention Hulk is awesome.
I also am happy for seeing the Black Knight and Kingpin here. Great characters.
Sinister....not so much.

I remember when I was reading X-Men at 10, 11 years old and thinking that Mr. Sinister was soooo cool and mysterious and the Goblyn Queen was soooo hot in that black outfit. Ah, the follies of youth...

I agree that the Goblyn Queen cemented within me a love of red heads that persists to this day.
I disagree that Mr Sinister was ever cool. I think he is a prime example of the problems of designing a character by committee. He started out somewhat mysterious and intriguing, then quickly became confusing and self-contradictory, then went to lame and silly before finally burning down falling over and sinking into the swamp.

Turner D Century? lol he was great, but he was in like one issue of Spider-woman before dying I think.

I, too, enjoyed the Gatherers story. Dane almost made my list based on that era of the Avengers alone (well, that and the Stern era).
And yes, Goblin Queen was one of several characters who helped cement my ongoing love affair with redheads.

It's kind of creeping me out how many people seem to have shaped their sexual fetishes around childhood superhero comics.

The Gatherer's Saga was where I first encountered Dane. His appearances in Thomas' and Stern's Avengers cemented my love of the character.
I still think writers have barely scratched the surface of his potential.
