Top 100 Marvel Characters #91-95
Still more...
92. Black Bolt - 61 points (1 first place vote)

Here's why Ben Dillon chose Black Bolt...
I believe that Black Bolt is an incredibly interesting figure because he's both a tragic character, and an extremely powerful one.He has the power to destroy mountains, but not the means to control it. He rules an
entire race, but can never speak to them. It's hard to imagine the self-control
someone must have to live that way, knowing what one slip could do. In the end, he
comes across as extremely noble, as someone you strive to be.
93 (tie). Doop - 60 points (2 first place vote)

93 (tie). Rachel Grey/Summers - 60 points (1 first place vote)

93 (tie). Sentry - 60 points (2 first place vote)

96. Elektra (1 point for Skrull Elektra) - 58 points

If anyone wants to e-mail me reasons why you voted for these people, feel free to do so at bcronin@comicbookresources.com

Elektra ranking below... Doop? OK, I didn't see this one coming.

Forget Doop what about The Sentry And Rachel Grey/Summers? I mean dear god why would they be in anyone favourite character list, let alone at least 3 people's 1st place? I guess by this stage I'm happy to admit me and the people that voted don't see eye to eye.
Glad to see Black Bolt make it into the top 100 though

1 Point for Skrull Elektra? Awesome!

Sentry, yay! I had feared that he wouldn't make the list at all. If I had voted, he may well have been near the top.

clearly, the world is coming to an end.

There's people that like the Sentry? If they had just left him alone after the initial mini, I could see it. Maybe. But now? They might as well just make God a character, since it seems that Sentry can pretty much do anything. How boring.

Is Sentry a new character using an old name? I don't recognize him. Of course, I also don't know Doop. I guess I'll have to look him up on Wika.
I'm glad to see Rachel made the list, though. I liked her and hearing that she came back almost got me to start buying X-titles again.

I just read about Doop, X-Static, U-Go Girl, etc.
I now hate the 60 of you who voted for Doop, causing me to become curious and going to read all of that. Don't you realize that things learned cannot be un-learned?

The people who think the Sentry can do anything must not have He is powerful but he's also got the paranoid schizophrenia working against him... and the threat of the Void coming back the more he uses his powers.
A little surprised about the placing of Elektra though. Then again I never really cared for the character outside of a couple issues late in her most recent run.

Rant aside, I love Black Bolt. He was in my top ten, seven or eight I think. Great design, great powers and great story. I would like to see more with him alone. Maybe him in his own mini-series.

Wow, Elektra is number 95?! Talk about a backlash.
Marvel clearly has a severely inflated (and severely outdated) sense of who its hot characters are.
And Black Bolt? Always, always awesome. Even if Silent War tried really, really hard to make him suck.

Can someone explain what a Rachel Grey/Summers is in two sentences?

"Can someone explain what a Rachel Grey/Summers is in two sentences?"
I can do it in 4 words: Leftover 80's/90's X-crap.

She's Cyclops and Jean Grey's daughter from a distopian future in which the Sentinels have killed off most of the mutants.
Not to be confused with all their other kids from the future, like Cable -- oh hell, go ahead and confuse them.

Daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey from an alternate future. Has powers like her mother. Came here from the future awhile back.
Used to call herself Rachel Summers, but starting using her mother's last name after her mother died and her father started dating Emma Frost (which Rachel was none too pleased with).

Ha! I'm definitely going to lord Doop tying Rachel over some people.
I never understood the fascination some people had with that character.

"That character" being Rachel. Doop is easy to understand.

Cool to see Black Bolt and Doop show up. I like both a lot, though I'll cop to forgetting all about Doop when making my list.
Rachel Summers is okay, though I haven't read X-Men since she still sported the rat tail and skintight red leather outfit...
Sentry? Meh...not a fan of Jenkins' pet character.
And Elektra ranking 95th? That surprised me at first, but when I thought about, since Miller revived her Marvel has done jack with her that has been interesting, so I can see people not really caring. The whole Skrull twist was probably the best thing to happen to the character in nearly 20 years...

So it looks like only 4 out of my Top 10 placed in the Top 100 so far, with only 5 to go.
Thanos and Galactus did pretty well, of course. Howard the Duck squeaked into the Top 50, and Squirrel Girl came pretty close. But it's not looking so good for Shang-Chi, the Ameridroid, Hannibal King, Fin Fang Foom and It, the Living Colossus. And no Uatu the Watcher? Seriously?

Shang-Chi? I'm sure he has the potential to be as good as any other character, I mean look at Iron Fist whose Mr. Cool now thanks to Brubaker. But I can't ever remember seeing him in ANY Marvel comic, guest appearance or otherwise (besides the one his in now).
Actually I can't even remember the last time I actually saw an Asian male character (as a hero) in a comic, or at least one who was significant in some way...That transforming (alien) guy from New X-men and Sunfire is the last I remember.
Of course I don't read that much comics...

I had Shang-Chi around #4 or so. That was a wonderful comic with one of the best supporting casts ever.
I didn't have Black Bolt even in my top twenty, but will always remember his introduction scene (and the sequence of events leading up to it) as one of the greatest character intros ever. I first read it in a Marvel's Greatest Comics double issue that reprinted FF 44 and 45 that ended with his entrance, smashing through a wall after the other Inhumans had appeared one by one, a dramatic cliff-hanger. When I was fifteen and Vancouver first got a comic book store, FF 46 was the first "old" issue of any title that I desperately had to have.
But my real reason for posting this is to ask, what's with that image of Elektra?? Is she wearing a cup, or this some sort of a residual Skrull thing or what? I know I'm way out of touch, but seriously, what's happening down there?
and what's a Doop?

A camera operator, an advisor, a friend, a lover, a limitless pocket of space, and above all, an awesome character from Peter Milligan and Mike Allred's X-Force/X-Statix comic of the early 2000's.

Shang Chi is in the one issue of Marvel Knights(4) I own. Teaming up with Daredevil, um well at least having coffee with Daredevil, Dagger,
and Black Widow?. I assume he does something cool in the issue before or possibly in the issue after.
I also tried to think of some asian heros to add to your list and only came up with Silver Samurai to add.

Fourthworlder asked: "What's a Doop?"
Theno answers: "Don't ask. It's too late for me, save yourself. The stupidity, it burns!!"
And, this is coming from someone who loved Milliar's runs on Animal Man, Shade, Extremist, and even Enigma.

If there's anything that Milligan's run on X-Statix WASN'T, it's stupid. Wacky, self-referential, silly... all these could apply. But not stupid.
Seriously, stop typing. You're so completely wrong, the keys on your keyboard dread every single time that you press them.

I've never read X-Statix, but do know that the line between stupid and silly / wacky can be very thin and pretty much purely subjective.

October 24, 2007 at 8:21 pm
I love most Milligan stuff (except his X-Men) and I'd say X-Statix is up there with his best stuff. He and Allred really gelled together.
I'm glad Doop made the cut.
And Black Bolt would be in my top 25 characters, so I'm rather glad to see him.

Unless, of course, you use the actual definition of the word stupid, which is what I'm doing. And that book was certainly not unintelligent, in plot, character, or style. Of course, it was satirical and parodic. That's where the silliness comes into play. Maybe the fact that it didn't take itself totally seriously is what turns people off. That's fine. But that doesn't speak to the intelligence level of the book.

I don't think anyone would fault you for that. It was far from his best work.

Master of Kung Fu, Shang Chi's Title, was brilliant - as fourthworlder wrote, great cast. He'd have made my list if we'd gone to 15.
Unfortunately, the conflict in Master of Kung Fu revolves around the fact that Shang Chi is the son of Fu Manchu. Since Fu Manchi is a licensed character, as is major supporting player Denis Nayland Smith, Marvel apparently cannot issue an Essential MoKF.
It's a shame. Those comics really are essential.
