Wait... Wait... Wait... "Deadpool holds a slot that no one else does in the Marvel U. Cable too."

Ok, I kinda like Deadpool and Cable... Good things HAVE been done with them... But, the above statement is false...

I'll focus on the claim that Cable "holds as slot that no else does in the Marvel U."

Cable is a child of an X-men who has arrived from the future... (like Rachel Summers). He has a sketchy history (like Wolverine). He has white hair (Like Magneto), one of his eyes glows, (like Longshot) and is a cyborg (like Forge). He came from the future (like Rachel Summers and Bishop) with an agenda. He carries big guns in spite of being a mutant (like Bishop). He is willing to use lethal force (like Wolverine) in the pursuit of whatever obsessive quest he's currently on (like Punisher)

It seems Cable occupies a number of slots that are held by other Marvel characters.

You know what would be cool? If he had a flaming head (like Ghost Rider) and was green (like Hulk) Then Cable would be infinitely cooler than he is... (which is infinitely cool already!)

Oh, and blanketedly dismissing Deadpool (or Cable) is sad and doesn’t make you ‘cool’.

I thought we went over this whole thing of assuming what the other person's motivations are.

Let me catch you up to speed, if you missed it:

Doing it is lame. You don't know what they think. Stop it.

The "You're just saying that to be cool!" one is really the lamest, too.

Deadpool is absolutely not underrated. That character gets plenty of attention and praise and has been present in the Marvel Universe for a good few years now.

I think he's overrated, actually.

Does the first Spymaster count as a mercenary? If so, he'd be number one on my personal list, at least as portrayed in the Micheline/Layton runs of Iron Man. Despite having no superpowers, he was depicted as a major threat to both Iron Man, the super-hero, and Tony Stark, the industrialist (a few Spymaster stories center on him trying to assasinate Stark or sabotage his company). Plus, he a constant source of amusing wisecracks.

As much as I like Deadpool, part of me will always view him as a Spymaster rip-off.

Can't argue with the top 4...I'd put Foreigner in there, though he's really straight up as an assassin, but he's just awesome and one of Peter David's greatest characters and gets no love these days.

Marc Hazzard from the New-U gets an honorable mention in my book. I mean, the title of thi book is MERC. What else do you need?

Dictionary.com has several definitions for mercenary. All include "someone working for money", most have the military version. By that defination, even the Avengers are mrecs. They get a decent paycheck! But I understand the intent of this article was focusing on the military viewpoint, so let's go with that one.

For the debate, PM/IF qualify as mercs just as much as Wing/Knight do. W/K started as Nightwing Investigations - a pair of PIs. PM/IF were the original Heroes for HIRE. If you think of PIs as scouts & spies, or as covert intel agents for hire, then PM/IF are clearly a combo of infantry and elite guard. All are aspects od military roles, so both pairs qualify as mercs.

Seeing the totle of the column, I felt PM/IF were a shoe-in for #1. Then I saw that it was limited to currently active mercs. Even still, don't you feel tha tthey deserve an honorary spot?

That Taskmaster LS was a lot of fun. Honestly, I like that costume a thousand times better than the original skull with eyes. While a cool look in the eighties, it just never really did anything for me after the LS came out.

Yay Deadpool! Definitely Rob Liefeld's best creation, and home to Joe Kelly and Fabian Nicieza's best writing. Arguably also Gail Simone's best. Truly, Wade is one of Marvel's most underrated characters, so I'm glad he got some love here.

What? You couldn’t find a good Taskmaster cover with the OG badass costume and yet you pick the uber-craptastic Jason in a Hoodie Taskmaster look?

Shame…..
I don't like that costume, either, Du, but if I'm going by Taskmaster as a MERCENARY, that's the costume he wears when he's working as a mercenary, right?

Not sure I'd classify Misty and Colleen as mercenaries in the purest sense -- they work for hire, yes, but mostly as detectives or bounty hunters rather than as armed combatants. But I love 'em, so any list they're on is a list I like. Silver Sable, too.

Paladin has always been one of my favorite Marvel villains. Although I wish he'd print up business cards with a chess knight and the tagline, "Have Gun, Will Travel" on them. Then he'd be totally awesome.

No Colonel Slaughter? No Donald Pierce? No Cable? No Maverick? No Corsiar and the Starjammers? (okay they're star pirates but they're also mercs right?)

And are Bullseye and Elektra mercs or specifically assassins because I've heard them defined as both.

Mark Hazard's giant forehead creeps me out. I think that alone should disqualify him. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Silver Sable, as I do for most of the secondary characters who popped up in the Spider-Man comics when I was five years old. I first started to like Paladin when he was showing up in Grunewadld's Cap, and I have to shamefully admit that I've liked Deadpool since he first got stomped by X-Force, although I have an inherent bias to wise assed, agile super characters. Probably Spider-Man imprinting on me at such an early age.
