As an aside...

Have y'all seen the latest anti-drug ad that Marvel and DC are running in their books (sometimes in prominent spots, like the inside back cover)?
It is so remarkably bad, even for an anti-drug ad, which are usually inherently awful. It's a fake video game review by a fifteen-year-old named Ted. Okay, so here's where it gets confusing. I do not know if Ted is supposed to be the kid who is doing drugs, or if the concerned friend of the drug user just happened to use Ted's review to make his point.
In any event, a concerned friend has drawn a picture of a joint and placed it in the picture of Ted from the video game magazine. He has also drawn a copious amount of smoke coming from the joint. Meanwhile, he also writes, "Tom [in big, bold letters], Check you out at the party last night. Not the friend I went with. We need to talk. - AJ"
So...huh?
Okay, let's say he meant to write "Ted" instead of "Tom," is that really an effective way of getting your point across? And if it WASN'T supposed to be Ted, then how does it make ANY sense?!? Who tears out a page from a video game magazine, writes some stuff on it and hands it to a friend and expects that to be an effective way to talk to a friend about their drug use? Not only an effective way, but a way that is SO good that it is even the subject of its OWN AD!!!

Yeah I noticed that a couple of weeks ago. It is pretty bizarre. I think the others are much better and funnier such as the one with the dog asking to be taken for a walk and the druggie telling him to "walk himself". Or the one with the loser who says "I smoke pot to impress the ladies" or something like that.
My favourite is the one where it is an advertisement for a computer game or something (it could very well be the one you are talking about) and it has like giant spiders or insect robots. I got myself excited thinking that this was a cool new game released soon, but then I saw it was a drug ad and it was just the druggie's warped mind. I was disappointed I have to say.

Yes, anti-drug ads that make drugs seem cool are usually very ineffective.
Case in point, Cartoon All-Stars. Anyone remember that? That cartoon where some kid smokes dope (or maybe crack, I can't remember) and then all his favorite cartoon characters (Muppet Babies, TMNT, Slimer, Smurfs, I think Bugs Bunny, ALF, few others) come to life to tell him what a loser he is. But the message is essentially "Take drugs, mind get's warped, cartoon become real" which seems rather awesome to me.
You know, for someone who lives a straight edge lifestyle I'm remarkably very tolerant of drugs, alchol, and tobacco.

Those anti-drug ads are invariably awful. The message always seems to be: it's not cool to do drugs, because people who do drugs only do it to be cool, so if you do it you won't be cool... not exactly clear.
the one that really stuck out for me was that one with the kid divided down the middle, and on oneside he's a geeky looking punk with green hair, and on the other he's a tanned jock; with the tagline be yourself, not who others want you to be" (or something to that effect). I mean, what the hell are they trying to say with that one? Which side is meant to be the "real" one? Bearing in mind that this is an ad in a comic book, so most of the readers are surely most likely to identify with the geeky side... but in that case are they saying the healthy looking jock does drugs? And that the green haired punk doesn't?

The thing is, whenever I read or see an anti-drug ad, I'm instinctively aware of the fact that it's from the government, who have perpetrated so many damned lies on the subject that they can't even be trusted when talking about the actual dangers of marijuana use.

I love the one TV ad where the girl is smoking pot and suddenly the dog starts talking to her about not doing pot. They played that in a movie theatre before the film and somebody yelled out, "Yeah, my dog talks to me when I'm getting high too!"
Classic.

I remember Cartoon All-Stars. I didn't care about the anti-drug message; I just thought it was cool to see this ultimate cartoon crossover. God what a nerd.
As for the ad in this month's comics, yeah, I agree they don't make any sense. I can't imagine if somebody was looking at that stoned. They'd never be able to figure it out.
I don't think Ted/Tom are meant to be the same guy. I think the point is that the friend just grabbed a random magazine ad (for "Gamer of the Week") and defaced it to give his friend the message that he embarrassed himself. It would have been clearer had they chosen two completely dissimilar names.

Actually, I guess the point is that we're meant to believe the un-defaced ad was what was originally in the very comic we're holding, until the anonymous friend defaced it. Crap. Guess I can't CGC it now.

The Cartoon All-Stars thing WAS awesome, but the kid in the cartoon never actually smoked any of the drugs himself. He wasn't hallucinating any of the things he saw, he actually was interacting with those characters.

I remember seeing that ad a few weeks back and being just as confused.I think I stred at that think for like five minutes trying to figure it out.Oh well, I guess if government propaganda is this confusing I'm not gonna worry about it when they start in with the ones about paying or taxes or joining the army or whatever it is

I also want to mention the Chapelle Show skit where Tyrone Biggins talked to the elementary school class and his message was basically, "I took drugs, and my favorite cartoons came out of the TV and we laughed and ate ice cream and cookies. It was terrible!"
But the main problem with these anti-drug ads is that the companies seem to think that kids read comics. It's been beaten to death how comics have become adult-oriented. When the older readers who have done their experimenting, continue to experiment(because really, Sinestro Corps is just that much cooler with a buzz, let alone any Kirby FF story), or have decided on their own to stay away from drugs, it just comes off as jive. But I'm sure the government gives Marvel and DC a nice subsidy, so I'm sure they will be around for a while.

My favorite don't do drugs/don't underage drink moment came during my senior year in high school.
We had some assembly and to kick it off they had clips of varius movies showing drug use. The problem was they had a scene from "Can't Hardly Wait" when the "geek" character is drunk, jumping up and down, saying he can't feel his legs, and generally looking to be haveing the time of his life. So, man does drinking look to be a lot of fun.

I can outgeek Cartoon All-Stars. In an episode of "The Powerpuff Girls, the evil chimp genius Mojo Jojo talked a group of kids into taking a drug which gave them superpowers. Once they were hooked, he tricked them into defeating the Powerpuff Girls. They finally realized their mistake, saved the day, and swore to lay off drugs.
It was all like a typical drug movie until the end when they were telling their class to just say no. One of the other kids asked what was the drugs were like. The former addicts all cheered, "They were AWESOME!"

My advice?
Smoke some good stuff and then look at some of the one and two page splashes in Jack Kirby's Silver Star.
That shit is intense!

You guys don't get it? I thought it was pretty obvious.
AJ wrote the note to Ted because he took acid and realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

About the only thing I took from that ad was "Man, a game with mechanical bugs fighting each other sounds really damn cool."

Wow, Annoyed Grunt, that was like, awesome, beautiful.
I really really get like into what you were saying there, like even on a spiritual level even.
Is there like maybe some more of that meatloaf?

The ad gives me the munchies, esp. when I then see the ubiquitous Old Spice inside cover ad of the girl licking the vanilla ice cream cone.

I'm just glad I'm not the old one who looked at the ad and thought 'Ummmm, what?'
The only good thing about it from an advertising perspective was that it kept my attention for about a whole minute. Unfortunately it was a minute spent wondering exactly what the message was meant to be.
Lately though, the freakiest ad in comics is the ENORMOUS staring face of Madalyn McCann. A British little girl who's been (allegedly) kidnapped and taken to Spain or Portugal (it's entirely possible she could have already been murdered, or that while making a big media fuss her parents could actually be involved with the whole thing themselves. It's all a bit fishy). Why she's turning up in my monthly imported American comics I'm completely bemused. It's like it's turning into 'Where on earth is Madalyn Sandiego' or something.

Yeah, that ad is really weird and poorly made. I like how they try to make it seem like someone under 40 talking by fucking up the grammer in the sentence. "Check you out at the party last night"?
Nobody talks like that on purpose.

I must admit that ad confused the crap out of me a few weeks ago. I was having a couple beers and catching up on my comics. I don't even remember which one I was reading, but it was the first time I came across that ad. My name is Tom and I was trying to figure out who AJ was and why he had written a message in the middle of my comic. I don't even get high so I wanted to know why he thought I did. Did he confuse that with me being drunk?
Then I realized that I'm just dumb.
