I must admit that ad confused the crap out of me a few weeks ago. I was having a couple beers and catching up on my comics. I don't even remember which one I was reading, but it was the first time I came across that ad. My name is Tom and I was trying to figure out who AJ was and why he had written a message in the middle of my comic. I don't even get high so I wanted to know why he thought I did. Did he confuse that with me being drunk?

Then I realized that I'm just dumb.

Yeah, that ad is really weird and poorly made. I like how they try to make it seem like someone under 40 talking by fucking up the grammer in the sentence. "Check you out at the party last night"?

Nobody talks like that on purpose.

I'm just glad I'm not the old one who looked at the ad and thought 'Ummmm, what?'
The only good thing about it from an advertising perspective was that it kept my attention for about a whole minute. Unfortunately it was a minute spent wondering exactly what the message was meant to be.

Lately though, the freakiest ad in comics is the ENORMOUS staring face of Madalyn McCann. A British little girl who's been (allegedly) kidnapped and taken to Spain or Portugal (it's entirely possible she could have already been murdered, or that while making a big media fuss her parents could actually be involved with the whole thing themselves. It's all a bit fishy). Why she's turning up in my monthly imported American comics I'm completely bemused. It's like it's turning into 'Where on earth is Madalyn Sandiego' or something.

The ad gives me the munchies, esp. when I then see the ubiquitous Old Spice inside cover ad of the girl licking the vanilla ice cream cone.

You guys don't get it? I thought it was pretty obvious.

AJ wrote the note to Ted because he took acid and realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

My advice?

Smoke some good stuff and then look at some of the one and two page splashes in Jack Kirby's Silver Star.

That shit is intense!

I can outgeek Cartoon All-Stars. In an episode of "The Powerpuff Girls, the evil chimp genius Mojo Jojo talked a group of kids into taking a drug which gave them superpowers. Once they were hooked, he tricked them into defeating the Powerpuff Girls. They finally realized their mistake, saved the day, and swore to lay off drugs.

It was all like a typical drug movie until the end when they were telling their class to just say no. One of the other kids asked what was the drugs were like. The former addicts all cheered, "They were AWESOME!"

My favorite don't do drugs/don't underage drink moment came during my senior year in high school.
We had some assembly and to kick it off they had clips of varius movies showing drug use. The problem was they had a scene from "Can't Hardly Wait" when the "geek" character is drunk, jumping up and down, saying he can't feel his legs, and generally looking to be haveing the time of his life. So, man does drinking look to be a lot of fun.

I also want to mention the Chapelle Show skit where Tyrone Biggins talked to the elementary school class and his message was basically, "I took drugs, and my favorite cartoons came out of the TV and we laughed and ate ice cream and cookies. It was terrible!"

But the main problem with these anti-drug ads is that the companies seem to think that kids read comics. It's been beaten to death how comics have become adult-oriented. When the older readers who have done their experimenting, continue to experiment(because really, Sinestro Corps is just that much cooler with a buzz, let alone any Kirby FF story), or have decided on their own to stay away from drugs, it just comes off as jive. But I'm sure the government gives Marvel and DC a nice subsidy, so I'm sure they will be around for a while.
