Beyond! gets my vote too; I picked up the hardcover cheap, used and breezed through it, but thoroughly enjoyed it. A fun, eclectic mix of characters, and it made me willing to buy a Gravity ongoing if they ever did one (and Beyond was my first exposure to the character).

I had heard that Harris left Starman because they cloned Jack and in the process, removed his tattoos. Harris was pissed enough to walk. Could just be a good old fashioned urban legend though.

There's a Japanese cultural idea that Americans have a hard time grasping: that any form of purely escapist entertainment is acceptable, so long as your behavior in daily life conforms to Japan's fairly exacting standards of politeness. It's assumed everyone has at least a little steam to blow off, and some people have a lot of steam. Watching people do outrageous things that no one could ever do in reality is a pretty decent way of blowing off steam.

(This said, a lot of the stuff you see in Previews and the like is acquiring a bad reputation, even in Japan. There have been some anti-otaku books written lately, some conventions chased out of their venues because pornographic material will be sold there, and a growing feeling that the escapism promised in a lot of manga and its attendant culture is wildly unhealthy. I've heard some rumblings about legislation from the government but have yet to see anything come of that.)

So, basically: judging an entire culture by the nerdy things it sells to nerds is not a great idea.

Man, the Japs are really, really weird people judging by their manga and tentacle porn. Uh well at least they going above and beyond when it comes to sexuality, which is weird since they seem like such a reserved and polite people/culture.

I love Oni and I love Sam Kieth, but WTF? Do they seriously believe they'll have the next three issues of Inner Bimbo out in time to have #5 come out in January? Or even February? Heck, I'd be stunned if it came out by March.

I don't really care about late books, but it does start to bug me when publishers continue with schedules that are clearly unrealistic. (Perhaps I'm wrong, the entire series is complete, it'll ship like clockwork. I'll believe that when I see it.)

I flipped through the pages of the Beyond! hardcover when it came out. A lot of people were raving about it but it looked awful imo it due to the horrible way the art was inked.

Yeah I've got to agree with the Michael Turner cover (it seems to be a recurring theme each month, ha ha), it is terrible, much like the rest of them. I never understand why publishers get a "name" to do a cover and then have completely different art inside. If people buy it just solely for the cover then I think they must enjoy throwing money away.

Also Beyond! gets my recommendation. I really enjoyed it seeing as the cast is just basically a group of randomers.

I slagged off the second Whiteout mini-series the other week on this very blog, because well... it's fucking terrible, and detracts from the goodness of the original.
It's a fucking good guys Vs bad guys action flick, and not a very entertaining one.

Why have the 'Killing Joke' Joker action figure? So that your Batgirl action figure can dodge the bullet and beat him up, of course.

You know, Rob, I didn't really feel all that negative while I was writing this. Maybe that speaks to the general crappiness of comics? I don't know, there's quite a lot that looks good, but when that Witchblade manga exists, I must say negative things!

I tried counting how many negative things you had to say and lost count due to depression, but it was around thirty.

G.I. Joe is a great book. Honestly the best the series has been since it's early Devil's Due issues by Blaylock and Seeley. I really like what Powers and Bear are doing with their WWIII storyline.

The Hack/Slash cover- as little from column A and a little from column B. The series has never been afraid to throw in the occasional bits of titillation with Cassie (see the gratuitous panty shot on the cover of regular series #1), but it also does a great job of parodying the cliches of slasher flicks, which include a lot of the sexual elements to the movies, such as surviving virgins, slumber parties, teen sex, etc.

I don't know if Empowered was the best graphic novel of the year, but I thought it was damn good. Volume 2 that just came out was a nice addition to the story and I'm already psyched about volume 3 because of a couple new storylines introduced in volume 2. For a series that began as a series of strips parodying superhero comics, Empowered has really come into its own with a good mix of humor and depth.

Not sure you'll like the Young Avengers happenings.. Brubaker's only doing the first issue for the mini-series, each has a different writer that focuses on a different character. Brubaker's is about Patriot, Brian Reed does the second one about Hulkling and Captain Marvel, and I don't remember any others but they were announced at one of the conventions.

In a Wordballoon interview a few weeks ago Heinberg basically said his second season won't be happening since he can't clear his schedule for any comics work anytime soon, or maybe ever agan. My recollection is him saying the Wonder Woman situation made him realize he can't do in-continuity stuff on a schedule and has to do separate mini-series and the like if he does decide to do anymore comics, and that he gave Marvel the go-ahead to do whatever with the team. But I heard it quite a while ago and might be off on the details.

Prankster: Nope, I have no opinion. Che obviously means a lot to many people, and I know he did very good things for some people and very bad things as well. We just always hear about how he's such a hero. A "well-researched" biography from a self-proclaimed "radical" publisher does not fill me with confidence that it be anything more than a paean to Che's saintliness. The real man, I imagine, is far more interesting, but far less perfect. I don't really have an opinion because I don't know enough about the specifics of Che's life to really know who's telling the truth about him. But he's not perfect, I know that, yet most of the propaganda we hear about him would suggest that he is.

Thanks for the info, Jason!

Shark-Man #1 -- Yeah, it's a reprint. More info here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=11287

FF -- Yeah, that cover IS horrible, isn't it? Normally I like Turner, but his FF covers have left a lot to be desired.

Young Avengers -- Supposedly, Heinberg is still working on a story arc (another 12 issue "season") to the book, but I haven't heard anything about it in a while.

Laika -- One of my reviewers at the site I work at absolutely loved it, saying the book made her "teary-eyed." More here: http://www.playbackstl.com/content/view/6724/167/

My Inner Bimbo -- Not sure what the deal is with the new co-credit, but considering Keith is also working on "Batman/Lobo: Deadly Serious," I imagine that's why #2 has never come out. Why they're still soliciting it is beyond me.

FF — Yeah, that cover IS horrible, isn’t it? Normally I like Turner, but his FF covers have left a lot to be desired.
