Must … stop … flood … of … Cronin … posts …
Here, as always, is this week’s shipping list. Here, as always, is what I’m buying:
Batman #670
Crime Bible #1
Dynamo 5 #8
Special Forces #1
Daredevil Annual #1
X-Men Messiah Complex One-Shot (I zipped past this, but I’m getting it)
Mouse Guard #2
The Secret History Books Three and Four (again with two of the same title in a week?)
Wasteland #13 (another one I missed - man, the eyes are worse than I thought!)
Not a ton of books, but that means there’s more for you to recommend. If you’re looking for something, check out the El Cazador trade. No, it’s not a complete story, as CrossGen bit the dust before it could finish, but it’s Chuck Dixon and Steve Epting doing pirates, and it’s quite good.
So: what else should I buy?

Well, Dark Horse can’t seem to get Groo: Hell On Earth #1 onto the shelves, and we’re deep in the middle of the current arc of Supergirl and the Legion, so that leaves Action Comics #858, which, according to DC, is going to be the first Legion of Super-Heroes comic anybody’s seen since Crisis on Infinite Earths. It’s strange: if the Legion was so popular back in the ’80s, why has DC completely ignored and abandoned the franchise until now? It’s been over 20 years, after all; you’d think that they’d find *something* to do with the Legion in all that time.

Er… I was going to say the Daredevil Annual, but you’ve already got it on here. How about the DC Infinite Halloween special?

I’m going to go with Action #858, too. While Geoff Johns’ new Legion isn’t the original, it’s pretty darn close (if you pretend volume 4 never happened, at least). I’d say it’s definitely worth checking out.

Army of Darkness. It has 400% more Bruce Campbell then any other comic this month.

Another vote for Action #858.
Also, Jack of Fables.

Kinda surprising that you’re not trying Messiah Complex. The majority of the advance reviews I’ve read have been very strong and I think Brubaker, Carey, et al have done a good job of building to it. I’m more intrigued by this than I have been by the X-Men in a VERY long time.

Whoops! I will be getting the Messiah Complex one-shot. I just missed it. I’ll add it to the list.

Jack of Fables. Next to the Daredevil Annual it is the book I am most looking forward to this week.

try: Supernatural: origins # 6; Wasteland # 13, Ultimate Power # 8, and New Battlestar Galactica one-shot: Pegasus.

Without a doubt, the DC Halloween Special.
Just look at some of the things going on in that book.
A DnA RM story for one.

Tom: I don’t see Wasteland on the list. I will buy it if it comes out, of course, but do you have inside information I lack?

I would recommend Gon vol. 2. Not typical manga. Not really manga at all. It is the sty of a little dinosaur getting in to trouble in a big world. Beautifully illustrated and superbly paced. And, for only $5.99 it is a steal!

New X-Men #43 is Skottie Young’s final issue, so that gets my vote.

There’s a new Savage Dragon this week. That book is at a weird place right now since Larsen is just getting back on schedule again and the book is taking another change of direction. Plus other then Brian no one on this site ever reviews it.

I’d almost love to see you get Ultimate Power just for the scathing review. It would be a thing of beauty!
One vote for Jack of Fables. Sounds like a Halloween issue, which is an interesting concept in the Fables universe. Oh, and someone marries a duck.

Wasteland is on the list in the “Comics” section.
If you’ve got the money, my vote is definitely for the Completely Mad Don Martin. It’ll make you laugh and laugh. It’s also good for a game of sound effect scavenger hunt. Just make up a combination of letters (”phleebeeht” for example), and race your friends to see who can find the closest approximation in the text.

If you want to stick with the superhero fare, I’d recommend Action Comics #858, with the start of the “Superman And The Legion Of Super-Heroes” storyline and the debut of Gary Frank as the artist.
For something a little different, I highly recommend the trade for the mini-series Paris, by Andi Watson. It’s coming out (heh, no pun intended) from Amaze Ink/Slave Labor. It’s a very sweet lesbian love story set in Paris during the 1950’s, with a poor American art student falling for a bored British debutante. Perfect for someone who might like films like Roman Holiday.

Justice Society of America #10. Introduction of Kingdom Come Superman to the JSA. I think that’s enough reason right there.

Other than that Iron Fist TPB I have been meaning to get for a long time and have no excuse not to now that it’s in soft cover, I am extremely underwhelemed by this set of books. Not wanting to be the kind of person who posts “I have no interest in this topic”, though, I’ll reccomened Storeyville, as it was supposed to be a big influence on the likes of Chris Ware and Seth, and sounds interesting in its own right. Okay, Amazon reccomending it to me is the only reason I’ve ever heard of it, but it sounds like it could be worth picking up. Here’s that Amazon description (http://www.amazon.com/Frank-Santoro-Storeyville/dp/0978972279).
Beyond that, I’d love to see you review Shonen Jump. I tried once, and I got a splitting headache before I finished the damn thing. Although I did almsot find Naruto interesting by the end of its serial in there, and there was one strip I really liked. Anyway, I want to see if it gives you physical pain, and I also kind of want to see you piss off a different segment of the internerd than the one you usually incite.

Yeah, I haven’t pissed off manga fans, have I, Brad? If I see Shonen Jump, I might have to pick it up!

I’m picking up 2 comics this week; Mouse Guard which you are getting and HAUNTED MANSION, which you are not.
Haunted Mansion is one of those cute, fun, and just mindless entertaining comics in the back of the Previews. Most of the stories in each issue are self contained, while there is one continuing story about the history of the Mansion, but you can pick that up without reading any prior issue.
Haunted Mansion, in the spirit of All Hallow’s Eve. Pick it up!
