Just ran across this -- and I must concur with the comments here: you do fine, fine work. It was my EXTREME pleasure to talk to you and Gavin and we pored over the proof copy for the rest of the day.

Many thanks, for your kind write up and for the work you do encouraging young talents.

-Eric T.

PS. (As a Doom Patrol fan, you may be amused to note that Valentina Vostok -- formerly Negative Woman -- is the new White Queen in Checkmate. Heh.)

They haven’t ever been collected in a trade, have they?

They have not. Always seemed weird to me considering it's an X-men spinoff, especially when you consider who DID get trade collections from that era... I mean, the whole run of Champions? That's setting the bar pretty low. And as much as I loved those collections, no one was clamoring for Essential Tales of the Zombie or Son of Satan, either.

Although Englehart wrapped up some of those dangling Beast plotlines -- Brand, Roxxon, Patsy Walker -- in Avengers, and that run DID get collected in a trade called Serpent Crown.

In a perfect world Marvel would put out collections not only of that Beast run but also (separately) of the Inhumans and the Black Widow runs that preceded them, when the two series were co-headlining Amazing Adventures. I remember the Widow stories from Thomas and Colan as being really good. None of them are long enough for an Essential, but all three series -- Inhumans, Black Widow, Beast -- would each shake out into a nice little trade collection.

You're doing the work of the angels, there, Mr. Hatcher. I work in a counseling program for children and youth and I know how much these experiences and accomplishments must mean to your students.

And hey I fondly remember those Beast issues. They stopped just before I started buying Marvels, so I would find them only in the used book stores and was always delighted to snatch one up. Unfortunately then I traded them all away in one of the periodic purges of my collection. They haven't ever been collected in a trade, have they?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, whether you believe it or not: you, sir, are a superhero. And I got a special kick out of the reference to the QEW gang. Every once in a while I'm proud to know Quenton Shaw, and this is one of those times. ;-)

Also, I totally agree about the Amazing Adventures run featuring The Beast. I'm pretty sure that was Steve Englehart's first superhero comic, and you have to admit he hit the ground running!
