[...] I previously posted about Secret History #3, while plugging Secret History #2 earlier this year, and now with the whole first series under my belt I can stand back and admire the shadow-panorama author Pecau has crafted for the underside of civilization, carefully situating his plots in historical contexts with cameos from real live dead people. The first series takes us up through the end of World War I, via the many medieval and Renaissance religious wars, Newton, and Napoleon, footnoted just enough for curious readers to be able to find out more about the names, places, and notions dropped. As though to mimic a history of epistemology, “magic” in the series gradually gives way to a concept of randomness, or luck and chance, manipulated by arcane means–an almost scientific idea of harnessed chaos. Thanks to Greg Burgas at Comic Book Resources, who pens a thoughtful appreciation of this overlooked series. [...]

Thanks for your kind and detailed words about The Secret History, a series I find woefully underappreciated, and not just because I get a great deal of fun out of translating it. It's my personal favorite of the three Archaia titles I do.

And I don’t know why you were charged $3.99. Maybe you need to take it up with your retailer, because it’s clearly marked as $3.50.

Dammit, you are right!!!
Now I have to go back and ask for my 49¢, plus tax!
(Something tells me this isn't going to end well!)

"Wolverine calling Scott 'Slim'; what’s up with that"

I've seen Wolverine do that a number of times before. Granted, it was a little overplayed in this particular issue, but I tend to like it when an author throws that in. It makes me laugh thinking of how in X-Men #1 Cyclops' name was Slim Summers and what a terrible name that is.

The Ra's Batman crossover, while I did buy the first issue, doesn't intrigue me much either, Greg. A villain like Ra's... it's just that you know how it's going to end before it starts. Maybe something will happen like Talia Al Ghul dying, but I really don't give a damn. If you bring in a villain like Joker, than there's frequently no telling what he will do but, as it stands, Ra's Al Ghul seems to be too predictable a villain for an enticing crossover.

Brad: Yeah, that's not surprising that you listen to the blondes more than me. Oh well.

I was going to get Batman, but then I remembered it's that whole crossover thing, and unlike finding out if they're going to undo M-Day, I don't have much interest in Ra's al Ghul coming back. If I hear good things I'll buy the trade. But probably not.

Re: Action Comics

That's Geoff Johns in a nutshell, I think. He's capable of telling a good story so long as you kick his crutches away (ultra-violence and continuity porn)...but working at DC, especially with the current editorial slant the company has, means that he's going to keep leaning on both those suckers.

(I actually feel the same way about Mark Waid, only I think he's capable of telling a great story, not just a good one, and he doesn't use ultra-violence as a crutch. Just continuity porn.)

And another thing; the Comic Book Gal on G4 recommend Dynamo 5 this week, so I'm interested in picking up. Meaning that months of your praise is equal to a 30 second blurb from a blonde on a niche cable channel. I just felt like sharing that.

Also, Greg: No Batman? To be honest, I skipped it because I'm already lukewarm about Morrison's Batman, and making it part of a crossover involving R'as doesn't help matters any, even if I-Ching and even more obscure characters are showing up.

Autobiography, to me, is like any genre I'm not an avid fan of; it all depends on the execution. That even extends to specific people who specialize in it; I like some Harvey Pekar stories a lot, and some not at all. It also probably depends on my mood. I don't think fictions inherently suprerior or anything, but I also don't think a story is inherently better because it's real, either.

I wasn't grossed out by Daredevil, but I didn't think it was too great either. I'm getting pretty sick of villains turning into heroes because they've got nothing else to do while the old heroes have their planners full of entries that read "BEAT UP TONY STARK." So basically he's going to be some ethnic Punisher variant? What is this, 1993? Yawn.

Also it's been about half a century now that the cliche wherein stories about the ghetto are the primary lens for any black or Latino character. Can we please get some other kind of stories?

Especially since this guy shoe-horns pretty awkwardly into NYC minority and crime cultures. Black Tarantula is Brazilian. The Bronx is Puerto Rican and Dominican. Brazilians DON'T EVEN SPEAK SPANISH.

ps - I generally agree about autobiographies. Particularly about people who aren't especially accomplished. A bio of a Michelangelo, or Robert Moses, or Hitler even? Yeah, sure, bring it on. But a bio of a moderately successful writer or a chick with Aspergers syndrome or guy whose parents died when he was a kid? I KNOW people like that. I don't need to go looking for them in books.

"How to explain how “Resurrection Man” works.
Resurrection Man.
There, that’s all you need. The name. Hell, I’ve never read a Resurrection Man comic and I got it right away"

You forgot to add that he develops a new Super Power each time he Resurrects.

I AGREE
XAVIER LOOKED Totally "EVIL" and he had the Psychic Nosebleed bit going (so cliche now)

at that point I almost stopped reading (and no I didn't buy it; I read a friends copy).

As it was I didn't like it.
Wolverine calling Scott "Slim"; what's up with that.
Warren tell Logan that "hey back in the day we called Scott "Slim"---use that to push his buttons."
PLEASE! No. It doesn't work.
Or Wolverine not being able to lock a scent because of other chemicals in the air.
That seems just wrong too.
Hated it.

Action Comics. Nice, but I hate Time Travel.

Tom - thanks for the support. I really do wish I liked the book more! I'll try to get out to San Diego next year.

There's definitely more going on in True Story Swear to God than X-Men: Messiah Complex, Ajit. In terms of single issues, it's better than the X-Men book, too.

That's a good point, red-Ricky. My wife tends to ignore my comics hobby, but if someone is bugging you about it, it's a good book to show them. And I don't know why you were charged $3.99. Maybe you need to take it up with your retailer, because it's clearly marked as $3.50.

Re: Mutant manisfestations:

Most mutants manifest during puberty, but yes, some get their powers earlier (going back as far as Jamie Madrox's powers and Nightcrawler's demonic look showing at birth). According to a character in X-Factor a while back, these mutants are actually a different subspecies, but I'm guessing this is what happened in Messiah Complex.

(Could it be the reincarnation of Cable? Wouldn't be the first time he shows up as a baby and is then suddenly an adult.)

I agree that the structure of the story didn't quite work--but I think it might have with a more suitable artist, one who's faces actually portrayed the emotions that drive the story.

"Can anyone explain to me why we needed a full-page panel of her lying on rubble with her shirt barely covering her breasts?"

To show off her tits. The page after that is about her butt. That's how come she doesn't wear any clothes.

‘True Story Swear To God’ may not be your cup of tea; but it's definitely in the Top 5 comics I would recommend to guys who are looking for stuff their girlfriends/wifes can read, so that they can at least be more tolerant of this hobby of ours.

As far as Action Comic goes, I have two questions:

1- Why was I charged $3.99? Is that the usual price or are comic books going up again?

2- And finally... Are the stories told after Giffen's 5 year gap considered part of the history of the real Original Legion; or did that history stop with the Baxter relaunch? I'm confused. Specially because Karate Kid was killed before Crisis; so Superman would know. Plus, he doesn't get the Crisis/Multiverse "get out of hell" card... or does he?
