COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

THE COVER GAME

This week’s game is as follows…

Find me a cover featuring Ice (Tora) without Guy Gardner or Fire on it…

Floating heads don’t count!

Here is an example (which you can’t use!)….

Guy Gardner by number 3– the first time I’ve ever gotten one of these!

(Sorry about skipping the html linkage. I haven’t had my morning coffee yet.)

oh look at that! Linkages are all automatic! Wonders never cease.

Beast and the Wasp would make interesting “amazing friends” for Spider-Man; Beast because the two of them would make a great bantering double-act, and the Wasp because she’d make a great Goldie Hawn-esque foil to their banter, with a few subtle jokes sprinkled in there to show that she’s smarter than she looks.

Really, there should be a Beast comic. There just should. “Beast and Wonder Man”.

“AMAZING FRIENDS”, huh?

Well… Spidey’s ALWAYS had some GREAT adventures when he’s teamed up with (fellow Ditko creation):
DOCTOR STRANGE.

SO DOC is definitely one.

The 2nd is a toughie… it would need to be someone to counterbalance the flippant Spidey & more stoic STRANGE.

But be a little more “grounded”, as DOC is other-worldly and Spidey has been shown to be VERY adaptable.

AND, it should probably be a female, to be fair, and to grab some girl-interest…

HELLCAT would be cool, but she’s too similar to Spidey & has too much of a mystical background these days to be of a good contrast.

KITTY PRYDE would be interesting.
She’s YOUNG and could be shown as being the least experienced (in battle… get your heads out of your pants).
But her intelligence would be a nice positive aspect for young girl viewers.

INVISIBLE WOMAN would be Great! But she’s too tied into the F.F.

Maybe just invent a NEW female character that is a mix of the Fisticuff-loving HELLCAT, the smart, but youthful KITTY (with her powers) AND SUE RICHARDS (strength of will and powers).

Like a “PHANTOM-GIRL” or something.
But, with a different name.
I don’t want there to be too much of a “Doctor Strange’s friends” vibe to it.

DOC should be the weird one.
Spidey the wild card.
The girl should be more “real”.

Hmm… or SHE-HULK.
THAT would work just fine!
She’s funny, has a STRENGTH power (to offset the gymnast Spidey & mystic Strange), is SMART, and could be a good role model for girls.
Yeah.
So, if you can’t invent a NEW character, use SHULKIE!

How’s that?

~P~
P-TOR

For Spidey’s friends I’d go with Human Torch and Kitty Pryde. That should give a nice mix of fun shenanigans and sexual tension.

And those two final entries for Comic Book Idol are ugly, poorly composed, and just bad drawing.

Have to agree with Sgt. Pepper. No snark, just negativity. Those two final contestants are very disappointing.

It’s funny, you think Ice would get a cover appearance at some point during her return storyline in Birds of Prey, but there’s not even a mention of her on any of them. I suppose this is a result of the fact that comics tend to have their covers revealed months in advance these days. That and the fact that the Secret Six are probably draw bigger attention than a Justice League member who’d been dead for 13 years. Anyhoo…

Cover Theme Challenege — Pointy-eared protagonists!

I agree that Kitty Pride and the Human Torch would be great for “Amazing Friends”. It would allow the show creators to use three groups worth of villians and side characters. Spidey and the Torch have a lot of history of being friends in the comics and Bendis is showing Kitty as a great foil for Spidey. Plus you’ve got a nice mix of powers.

I never knew that Guy played for U of M. I think he just became my favorite Green Lantern.

When I read “pick Spider-Man amazings friends” I was taken aback. It’s a really hard task. Not for the obvious reasons though. When it comes down to it Spider-Man has one great amazing friend and that is Johnny Storm the Human Torch. Maybe I’m stuck in the past, but who doesn’t remember the fun these two use to have? I agree Beast and Spider-Man would have good banter, but so did Johnny and Pete. So what makes this decision hard is who would be the counterbalance to these two? Frankly just the two of them is good enough, but if I had to go with a third… ooo… Black Cat. She’s still gaga over Spidey but Johnny likes her for obvious reasons and there you go you have an ongoing love triangle.

THE COVER GAME
Justice League Quarterly #7

I like the idea of Spider-Man teamed up with Black Cat and maybe the Human Torch. She would intensify this already great rivalry/friendship.

It’d be too horrible to team Spidey with Spider-Woman AND Arachne. It’d be the “gimick rip-off tagalongs”.

Pre-Annihilation Nova might be a good choice. Young tough-kid attitude, and a strong flying guy.

Or you could replace him with the 70’s Ms. Marvel. She’s add the same combat abilities, but have the Kree/alien story hook.

Nova would be a better for writing the team dynamic, Marvel for the story openings. You can’t have both, though, because they’re almost the same for powers.

How ’bout Ms. Marvel & Hawkeye? Hawkeye gives the bad-boy attitude and the ranged fighting.

GOT IT! Black Cat & Ultimate Kitty Pryde. They’d constantly be fighting for Parker’s affections.

For Spider-Man: How about, oh, Colossus and Zatanna?

(Nobody ever said “Marvel only”.)

Abbey Cable on the second clue (and probably wrong)

Oops. Someone already picked that one.

Spidey’s Amazing Friends – my candidates:

Male – Dr. Strange, Luke Cage, Booster Gold (If not limited to Marvel), Flash.

Female – Kitty Pryde, Spider-Woman (I was thinking Drew, but any of them could work), She-Hulk, Marvel Girl, Squirrel Girl, Wonder Girl (if not limited to Marvel).

Cover theme game: All 3 covers feature characters from fictional countries? Latveria, Atlantis and I bet SW characters are from fictional places…

Spider-Man’s Amazing Friends? I would find this annoying in comics, but I think it could work in a cartoon: Deadpool. That could make for some great situations in a cartoon. I’m surprised no one said this before.

Now, as for another amazing friend; someone who can have fun (you’d have to on a team of Spider-Man and Deadpool) but is also forward and straight-laced to add to the team dynamic. So I’m going to have to go with… She-Hulk? Maybe Kitty Pryde? Either way, that’s a pretty ridiculous team, but it could make for an entertaining cartoon.

While I find it hard to think about the Amazing Friends outside of Iceman and Firestar, a team-up which I would keep in tact if I had my way, I think the point of the game is to mix it up a little.

Black Cat and Johnny Storm were mentioned above, but they’ve both had their time teaming with Spidey. I think that the flighty banter with them wouldn’t be anything new, and while it would be fun, I don’t think it would be compelling. Beast is an interesting choice, but again, aside from trading one-liners, I don’t see the appeal.

But thinking about the Human Torch brings me right to my first choice; Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman. I think that she’s a strong personality with some interesting character facets that would reflect interestingly with Spider-man’s life. I think that post-Civil War, She could use a break from adventuring with the FF and try some hero-ing without her husband around, and I think that Spidey could bring out a little joie-de-vie from her as well. Plus, the occasional Peter/Franklin scene would never hurt my enthusiasm either.

That leaves the much more difficult third choice to round it off. I wouldn’t want anyone too “bouncy”, as Pete will fill that roll, or someone too stoic, as I’d like to see Sue be the one to open up a little in this run. With Spidey representing the Avengers and Sue the FF, I think that would leave me with someone from the X-verse to really cover the Marvel world. And with that, I’d pick my personal favorite character: Cannonball. He’s a flyer, and he packs a punch. I think that he teamed up well with Spider-Man in the past (Marvel Team-Up #149, X-Force #4), and that he’ll bring a more versatile approach to the team.
It’s a little different, sure, but I’d read it.

Cover Theme Game: the covers feature characters with ‘Rider’ in their names. Dark Rider from MTU; Rich Rider on NW and Nomi Sunrider on Star Wars.

I like Sue Storm but not the Cannonball pick. How about Sue and someone that Sue wouldn’t get along with from the X-Men. Hmm… not too many that Spidey would get along with that Sue wouldn’t. Maybe Black Cat would be a good choice (although not an X-Men)– a street level hero that doesn’t always play by the rules and has a lot of past history with Spidey but not Sue.

Provided the “Amazing Friends” don’t have to be male and female? Luke Cage and Iron Fist all the way. Think about it. Best show ever.

Eh, the world’s a crazy place when the two finalists were the guys who couldn’t even get the script right last time out :(

The Thing and the Human Torch would be great pals for Spidey to hang out with. Luke Cage and Iron Fist would be cool too.

Spidey’s Amazing Friends:

Namorita was the first character to pop into my head, probably because of the cover challenge. Is she still alive? If not, Valkyrie.

For the guy, I’ll go with Falcon. No real reason, I just like how the two characters look together.

Actually, there’s no way we’ll see Falcon & Valkyrie in the same story anytime soon. I think Spidey could brige their seemingly incompatible frames of reference.

Cover Theme Game: the covers feature characters with ‘Rider’ in their names. Dark Rider from MTU; Rich Rider on NW and Nomi Sunrider on Star Wars.

Correct-a-mundo!

Spider-Man and his amazing friends, Howard the Duck and Galactus.

I’m not wrong.

I kinda like Rocky and Bullwinkle as amazing friends…

But if you want Marvel characters, I’d go with Squirrel Girl and The Punisher.

Weird. I just brought up Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends over on The Absorbascon, and now I see them over here.

Like Scott MacIver, I have a tough time picking two Amazing Friends who aren’t Iceman & Firestar. How about Captain America & Namor the Sub-Mariner? Nice variety of powers & the leader, the smartass & the hothead would make for some nice character dynamics.

I thought the mystery character was Cyborg until clue #4. I forgot that Guy Gardner was from Baltimore.

Eh, the world’s a crazy place when the two finalists were the guys who couldn’t even get the script right last time out :(

Seconded.

That said, I like the first option better.

Justice League Quarterly 11 has Ice & no Fire or Guy-

oops, scratch my Cover Game…I didn’t see the Fire stipulation.
