Fun With Flags

Reader Andrew Collins pointed this out (courtesy of a friend of his), and it’s a pretty amusing question, I think…

Why is Captain America wearing the Puerto Rican flag on his chest?

Because that new costume design wasn’t very well thought through.

It is a territory, after all.

It still sorta counts as America. It’s not like he’s wearing a Guatemalan flag.

Probably because the costume reeks of suck.

A more pertinent question would be: how can he sit down without crushing his nads?

The new Captain America has no balls.

Diversity!

Because Alex Ross is a shitty costume designer and used more chrome than most West Hollywood clubgoers.

The black’s ok, just go all the way and go the US Agent route if you’re going to do it.

This is the problem with the free market – out sourcing to other countries.

Aha! The new Cap isn’t Bucky at all! It’s The Battling Bantam!

It’s a clue to his real identity. The new Captain America is none other than Vibe from the Justice League Detroit!

How do we know he isn’t Captain Puerto Rico? Maybe everything so far has been misdirection on Marvel’s part so they can surprise us with this wonderful, completely original, new character.

Maybe everything so far has been misdirection on Marvel’s part so they can surprise us with this wonderful, completely original, new character.

They couldn’t risk it – that would break the internet into 1/16ths!

Because Marvel knows most Americans barely know their states, let alone start pondering about our president-voting-less, under-power-of-the-congress island’s flag to compare it to some short lived version of Captain America. B’sides, I’ve always thought Captain America’s costume is but a nibble away from being Puerto Rico’s flag, anyway.

FunkyGreenJerusalem: “They couldn’t risk it – that would break the internet into 1/16ths!”

And it would rape our childhoods.

Because he is pro-Statehood?

Actually, its a common mistake; but that’s really Esteban Rodriguez… Captain Aguadilla!

He was featured in that 1942 Comic entitled “The Captains of All the Americas!”

Come on people! I can’t believe that the only two persons who remember this story are Grant Morrison and myself.

hahahaha. Alex Ross is paid way too much.

it’s a frakkin conspiracy!

Now they might finally grant them statehood!

Maybe the new Cap is actually Tom Beland?

Mouhahahaha !!!

Simply because Alex Ross isn’t the guy you go see in order to have a kickass costume… Marvel, Marvel when will you learn.

I remember the X-Men design he did back in the day…

& Rich Jonhston just rumored that Ross will design the new Batman costume :(

Eyes bleeding in perspective !!!

Isn’t the White Tiger PR? Nobody’s heard from him in a while.

How long before we see the new Captain America ask a woman “Do you want a little Captain in you?”

[...] En Comics Should be Good se preguntan ¿Por qué carajos el Captain America tiene la bandera de Puerto Rico en el pecho? [...]

Maybe the new Cap is actually Tom Beland?

Upholding the nation’s great ideal of calling people pussies!

But Tom Beland probably knows what MySpace is.

“Do you think that A on his mask stands for Argentina?”

No, it stands for Agouti, a large rodent found in the Caribbean that makes a tasty dish!

“And it would rape our childhoods.”

Heck, it’d rape our gestations.

Because Puerto Rico’s the unofficial 51st State, of course!

All of you guys are wrong and it’s oh-so obvious—

Quesada said “Make it so!”

Captain Puerto Rico

That’s not an Alex Ross picture. Please remove heads from anuses.

Thanks.

Because the real Captain America, Steve Rogers, is about a decade away from Hal Jordan-like resurrection and vindication. The idiots running the title right now don’t know anything about the character or the ideals it stood for. It’s fitting that he has a territory’s flag on his chest.

I depends. Was he forged from the grit, iron and muscle of true American spirit, or did he float to Florida on a 56 Chevy with the doors glued shut?

The more interesting question to me is: why is he holding a gun? I don’t know of any other superheroes who have to use a gun. Disturbing…

It is not the Puerto Rico flag, it has the star and red and white stripes, it is shaped like a shield on his torso. That is still the American Kick your ASS Flag!!

Is this maybe Captain South America?

No because he is white…..

The basic design of his torso is exactly the same as his previous costume…

Also if you notice the STAR on his chest is straight up and down. The star on the flag is tilted to the left.

It’s the 51st state after all.

I’m more pisses about the fact the he is carrying a gun. Cap uses his shield not a gun, even if it is a WW II era pistol.

That’s not an Alex Ross picture. Please remove heads from anuses.

Thanks.

Alex Ross designed the costume in question.

Captain America…able to steal hubcaps in a single bound!

Captian Obvious

This is assuredly a superhero from the United States. Who else would consider brandishing a handgun as a superpower?

Ross’s Captain America design is a retread of the one he did for the movie version Spider-Man. Rhymes with yuck.

when I was a wee comic book nerd Captain America didn’t use a handgun…. that’s just wierd as well.

Also Peurto Rico is still a territory and can be as patriotic toward America as anyone.

Better Question:

Why should adults debate this issue???

First Costume:

I think that the rippling pectorals and abs being used to show a flag rippling in teh wind is tacky.

I like the darker coloration though, I think it ads a sense of gravity to the character. Yeah it does look like the Puerto Rican flag. So what, its a good loking flag.

But a pistol? That just seems…wrong…somehow. And why a man again? Why not a girl? Or a group of people? Captain is a gender neutral rank

Now, in regards to Puerto Rico. Personally, and as a Citizen of the US and a Californian, I think it would be great if Puerto Rico entered the union. Perhaps the situation is more complex than it seems, but it appears that they would gain the right to vote in country wide elections, and still maintain their autonomy. Yes taxes suck, but its the price you pay.

As for ethinc, or patriotic pride in being Puerto Rican; look at Texans. Noone has to give up their cultural identity. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

I’ve seen similar designs like that modeled onto a shield. It just may need some refining, chill.

Puerto Rico = U.S.A. btw…

His name is “Captain America”, not “Captain United States”. Puerto Rico is in the Americas.

“Captain America…able to steal hubcaps in a single bound!”

So THAT’S where he got his shield from?

Of course the answer is – as noted – that he is doing no such thing: the stripe count differs, and as in so many other areas of the world around us, differences *matter*, especially in symbols of mass group identity such as flags. Words too, but that’s a whole bunch of other threads… ;-}

But “pretty” amusing? For me, at least, a mandatory criteria for that rating when evaluating funny questions about the real world is that they match that reality in their central theme. When the premise is built upon a glaring falsehood, it becomes a fictional story, and the evaluation criteria shift accordingly. Under those rules, it potentially could be pretty amusing, but there’s a heckuva lot of backstory I’d need about that world where symbols of identity are thought of generally as freely mutable (since only that mindset allows the question’s premise to stand). It could be a rollicking good funny story, too, but no, it’s not there yet.

See, the question makes me, instead, wonder if they noticed the similarities during the design process and took pains to ensure they weren’t identical?

It did make me go “heh” out loud, though, so there’s that. And it generated some “really” amusing comments, along with the obligatory rags on the new costume design(er) and current creative/editorial/management teams, so double bonus there.

That costume, though…I mean, it’s purty and shiny and noble when posing, but if that whole front doesn’t bend like cloth any sort of acrobatics are flatly impossible. He couldn’t successfully land from a head-first dive without breaking something, for creesus’ sake! And Cap tends to jump/dive/throw himself at people, IIRC…

I like tacos.

Is that a Puerto Rican trilobite on your belly or are you just happy to see me?

america goes all the way to the cape...

December 5, 2007 at 7:01 pm

duh

Because he didn’t have money to buy the other 49 stars! Because his chest isn’t big enough!
Because he likes rice and beans!
Because he is boricua ‘pa que tu lo sepas!
Because he doesn’t wants to pay federal taxes!
Because he knows Puerto Rico is looking for a new governor!
Because his grandmother is from Mayaguez, PR!
Al fin y al cabo, a quien le importa!!!
Who cares!!!

I’m not sold on the overall design as yet, but I’ll withhold finalizing my opinion until I see the costume in action.

mpanzera, maybe you should read a few more comics. Here are a few off the top of my head:

Punisher (most obvious)
Deadpool
Maverick
Solo

And thats just a few from Marvel, the list gets more extensive if you add other companies to the mix. If you say that these guys have other powers I’ll respond that being in shape to be at “peak human performance” is a pretty nifty power in itself, and that shield of his does a pretty good impersonation of near invulnerability.

Why shouldn’t Captain America have a firearm? He is after all a “Super Soldier” and soldiers carry firearms. Always seemed kind of silly to call him a super soldier and then he never carried a firearm of any sort.

“But Captain America is above that!” While Cap has always been somewhat MacGuyver-seque in how he deals with certain problems (as are most soldiers) sometimes a firearm is the appropriate tool for the job at hand. Besides, I would figure that any Captain America would understand the APPROPRIATE use of firearms.

Because WE RULEEE!!!

ARRIBA PUERTO RICO PUNETA!! YA NOS APODERAMOS DEL CAPITAN AMERICA!!! HAHAHAHA!!!

estamos donde quiera! :-D

Yes we are every where!!!
PUERTO RICO rules!!!

Puerto RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRricooo!!!!! eso essss!!!

Greatest Sigers ….best X-mas in the world ..and now a super hero !!! yay

my bad in the last comment … I wrote GREATEST SIGERS…. its suppose to read like this … GREATEST SINGERS IN THE WORLD!!

He’s not – count the stripes. 5 on the PR flag; 7 on Capn Ameria’s chest.

Is it an Iron Man Cap suit? All fleximetal or rigid foreskin or what ever he calls it? Prolly a Cap variant of the spider suit that didn’t stay on the real hero very long (I did like the recent Initiative comic featuring the suits). It’ll be here, we’ll bitch, it’ll go away.

I CAN FORETELL THE FUTURE!!!

“And why a man again? Why not a girl?”

I like how that question *almost* sounded serious. Besides, we already have American Maid from the Tick’s comics.

Captain America is a man.
Superman is white.
Batman is gay.

Thats the way the world works.

Rico… Suave……..

It’s a cartoon character…. based on a comic book…. Get a life…

It still sorta counts as America. It’s not like he’s wearing a Guatemalan flag
Si, pero Guatemala es en Las Americas.

W00t, State 51! Captain America’s going 1 at a time. Next up, Captain America: Florida Edition :P

^_^\m/

It is because the Marvel editorial staff is lazy, and they think we are stupid.

The new Captain American was born in East LA.

It is because the Marvel editorial staff is lazy, and they think we are stupid.

MEANWHILE… In the real world….

No they aren’t and no they don’t.

let me take a moment to educate the masses – 1) if you look closely @ the Puerto Rican flag, notice that the star only points up when it’s held/waved horizontally…
3) Puerto Rico isn;ta 3) there are only 5 stripes – 3 red and 2 white, the uniform has 4 white and 3 red…. 4) the biggest change on the uniform is the US Agent-esque look that has been adopted for his new series – the flag design has always been the same!!! 4) the last time i checked, he was a superSOLDIER – SOLDIERS CARRY GUNS!!!!!! i don’t really know who was STUPID enough to make this such a big deal, but seriously?!?!?!?!?

sorry about that – what i meant to say that Puerto Rico isn’t a state – it’s still a territory!!! (for those that don’t take the time to keep up w/ current affairs…) I am a Puerto Rican American male and would think it to be pretty cool that the new Cap was a boricua, but just b/c the outfit slightly resembles the flag, that doesn’t mean that he IS in fact a Rican….

[...] i had NO IDEA that captain america was puerto rican.  (link) [...]

When he confronts a bad guy, he says, “Who you tryin’ to get crazy with S-A? Don’t you know I’m loco?”

/insane in the brain

Okay, honestly, I still don’t get it…

The layout of the torso is nearly identical to his old costume. Blue on the upper part, vertical white and red strips on the lower part. There was no problem with his previous costume…

The layout of the torso is nearly identical to his old costume. Blue on the upper part, vertical white and red strips on the lower part. There was no problem with his previous costume…

It is fairly similar, except the one notable change – the blue triangle going down the middle of the red stripe – makes it look similar to the Puerto Rican flag.

The old costume did not have the blue triangle going down the middle of the red stripe, so it did not evoke the Puerto Rican flag.

[...] captain america’s new logo is the costa rican flag? Out of all the things that stand out about Captain America, it is probably most obviously that he is Captain America. Regardless of America being his most defining feature, his new costume sports the Puerto Rican flag. While this may be an oversight due to ill-educated cartoonists, and while Puerto Rico may in fact be an American territory, the  designers may have some explaining to do in the near future… [...]

“It is because the Marvel editorial staff is lazy, and they think we are stupid.

OK, then ‘splain why no one over at Marvel seems to know how the American flag should be hung? I refer you to this and this.

It is because the Marvel editorial staff is lazy, and they think we are stupid.

MEANWHILE… In the real world….

No they aren’t and no they don’t.

Well then why is it that they can’t seem to figure out how the American flag is displayed? It was screwed up and hung wrong in Ultimates 2 #13, and again in Avengers a The Initiative #6? Isn’t anyone over at Marvel professional enough to find out the proper way to hang a flag?

He was born and raise in Puerto Rico, and became a Latin American hero for USA. Resides in Orlando…!!

wow… Puerto Rico isn’t a territory… its a commonwealth. and they are two different things. for being PR… your kinda stupid!

“your” not too bright either.

OK, then ‘splain why no one over at Marvel seems to know how the American flag should be hung? I refer you to this and this.

Sooooo…. Correct me if I misunderstand your agrument. It boils down to..

Knowing how the American flag ALONE is the most important factor in distinguishing intelligence and respect for your audience…

You have a valid point in there somewhere. You wanna back up and try for some better phrasing, thar, Chief?

I want to be Captain America!
Throw a round shield in America!
Fight the Red Skull in America!
For a small serum in AmerIca!

^ that’s a reference to Westside Story. NICE!!! someone knows their ethnically enhanced movies

re: the stripes:

Aren’t there three red stripes on both NuCap’s chest and on the PR flag? The white stripes on each side could just be a framing device, to let the red stand out more than against the blue/black…

…or it could be reference to Jack and Meg. Whee!

And yah, certain responses to this thread show why Marvel would never make a Captain Wider Americas. ^_^

People, hobviously this is because Joe Quesada is Puerto Rican, and as he proved with One More Day, the Marvel Universe is all about living out his own personal adolescent fantasies.

you guys are funny, i mean…really, tho, it’s not that serious. you guys REALLY think that they’d fuck up on captain america like that….think about it people…dumb asses

This is one ugly costume. this is by the same guy who designed a ton of great Kingdom Come costumes?

Last time I check America doesn’t stand for just USA, nor the term of one being American means a USA citizen. For all the ignorants here, America is the whole Continent in which not USA is located but also P.R., Chile, Argentina, ect. So why can’t Capt. American wear the P.R. flag?

P.S.
Also the term latin american & hispanic being a race apart from the white is some nonsense tag given by the fu**ing fatass and ignorants northern Americans (excluding Canadians. Just because our speaking languages derived from the LATIN doesn’t mean that we are a different race. Since the race White belongs to all those who inhabite the American Continent(North, Central ans South) and most europeans.

Is just that the Usa didn’t found a original demonym for themselves so they try to use the term American as if they were the only ones. What a pity they are, northern american.

Hey, Im Captain Puerto Rico. Im coming soon. So don’t worry.
I’m comin to save you all.

Tienes la bandera de Puerto Rico porque el lo mejor! No te pongas tan celoso Americanos!!!

He hangs out in P.R and eats roast pork and alcapurias when he is not saving the world. Secret vacation spot for the Avengers? hmmmmmm I knew that was Thor at Plaza las Americas mall in San Juan. The cops were questioning him about the hammer.

He proabably got that uniform from a souvernir shop in P.R. He might have had to much Don Q rum with Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Tony Stark said hey I got you a new uniform. Cap was so drunk he did not notice and went out to save the world with a Captain Puerto Rico uniform on. Tony pulled a fast one on Cap. If cap was in the real world he would ware a U.S Army uniform. Alex Ross is a shitty uniform designer. Cap needs a better uniform.

He has an M1911a1 I dont care what flag that is, the pistol is American enough

I always thought he was Captain Liberia. The A stands for Africa. That’s why he carries a shield

I honestly don’t see wat’s soooo wrong about it. Big woop he’s captain America and is wearing the Puerto Rican flag. The flag doen’t change who he is….how he acts does.
