Judging (Marvel's January) Books By Their Covers

Marvel's January solicits have been up for quite awhile, and before we see NEXT month's this week, let's now make some prejudgments based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgments, don't we?).

Let's begin!
___________________________________________________

OH MAN!

Check it out!! You know how this series features zombie versions of Marvel characters?

Well, look at this!! The cover to this comic by Arthur Suydam is an homage to famous past Marvel cover, only it is featuring a ZOMBIE on the cover!!

Man, that's clever.

By the by, for the record, please note that I lay none of this really on Suydam's feet. What's he going to do - tell them to stop paying him to do these covers?
___________________________________________________

Remember the last time Wasp was turned into a creature?

That was such a silly idea.

Pretty cool Bagley cover.
___________________________________________________

Interesting cover, in that the cover design is quite clever on Horn's part, but the drawing of Ms. Marvel is one of the worst ones I've seen by Horn yet.

___________________________________________________

Do you think Moon Knight's gigantic hands will be explained in the comic?

Like maybe it's a dream?

Pretty darn weird-looking cover by Suydam, but I guess we should just be happy it is not a zombie homage, eh?
___________________________________________________

The cover layout by Greg Land is quite good, but everything else is spotty at best - iffy perspectives and an odd-looking physique for Ka-Zar.

___________________________________________________

I really like Juan Santacruz' drawing here of the Hulk and the Silver Surfer...

Here's my question, though - what, exactly, is happening on this cover?

Are they falling backwards?
___________________________________________________

A much nicer Leonard Kirk drawing of the Thing than last month's Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four.

This is a fun cover by Kirk.
___________________________________________________

Like the old Civil War covers, it's kind of hard to judge covers when they're following a specific theme like these Iron Fist covers.

That being said, this Kaare Andrews cover is cool-looking.
___________________________________________________

Very fun looking Gurihiru cover for this team-up cover.

Oh, and let me note how impressed I was by Marcelo Dichiara's artwork in the first issue of Iron Man/Power Pack. Good stuff.
___________________________________________________

While doing the Mythos comics, I think some of Paolo Rivera's innate design sense was sacrificed in favor of "draw famous Marvel characters realistically!," which often got some odd results.

Here, he has been given more freedom, and I think it is a very nice, strong cover.
___________________________________________________

Well, its a nice drawing by Ed McGuinness, I suppose.

It's just that we seem to have seen this particular homage a loooot.

Oh well.
___________________________________________________

I am totally loving the fluidity of this Juan Bobillo cover.

___________________________________________________

It often seems like Mike Deodato has in his mind certain effects, rather than actual cover ideas.

You know, like, "Hey, I should work on some 3-D-esque effects for my next cover"

That's not a BAD thing, by the by. Just something I've noticed with his covers.
___________________________________________________

Nice Lan Medina cover.

Just eerie enough - and the hands are prominent enough for it to not be lost on a casual glance.
___________________________________________________

Not a big fan of this Michael Turner cover, although I'll give him the Thing - that was an interesting approach he took as to how the Thing would age.

___________________________________________________

Uhmm...Francis Tsai?

Did you mean for it to look like Psylocke was stoned on the cover?

I mean, I dunno, that might have been unintentional, but boy is it weird.

Also, not for nothing, but when you do a "who will be on the new team?" cover, and you feature a character (the Rogue above Beak) who has never been in the book before, sorta kills the mystery aspect of it.
___________________________________________________

I get that, presumably, we're supposed to think, "Oh, something's wrong - Captain Marvel can no longer fly! He's screwed!"

And for that, Ed McGuinness does a nice job.

I just think it'd be funnier if he's halfway down before he's all, "Oh wait, I can FLY! DUH!"
___________________________________________________

Definitely an "America - FUCK YEAH!" cover from Alex Ross.

I view a lot of Ross covers as "FUCK YEAH!" type covers.

Like, "Standing all somber in front of a black background - FUCK YEAH!"
___________________________________________________

Steve Epting does a nicer job with his cover.

Is that an homage to something?
___________________________________________________

Hilarious Black Panther cover by Salvador Larocca.

It's also a useful tool for identifying morons - see how many people look at it and think that this is what Storm's actual new look is - far, far too many.

"Comprehension iz hard."
___________________________________________________

Yay! Taskmaster! Huzzah!

Decent enough Stefano Caselli cover.
___________________________________________________

Another nice, throwback cover by Ron Frenz for Spider-Girl.

___________________________________________________

Oh Anita Blake covers, why must you vex me so?

Ah well, Brett Booth is just giving them what they want, right?
___________________________________________________

Decent cover design for Zombie by Kyle Hotz.

Commenter Dave says it is an homage to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie poster. That's interesting!
___________________________________________________

So wait, can their powers hurt each other, or what?

Either way, decent Billy Tan cover.

By the by, Paco Diaz is now going by Paco Diaz Luque. Anyone know why?
___________________________________________________

Eric Nguyen pulls off "people reflected in a monster's eyes" a lot better than Greg Horn did.

___________________________________________________

This Nic Klein cover has got to be an homage to something, right?

Because otherwise, what an odd layout decision.

Did Reggie Hudlin come up with Tom Foster? If so, people should give him credit for that. It's a fine idea.
___________________________________________________

Decent Jimmy Cheung Warbound.

When will Korg meet Thor!??!!?

___________________________________________________

Is this, like, a protest by Suydam?

"If I ain't drawing zombie homages, I don't know WHAT to do with the characters on the covers!"
___________________________________________________

Interesting Simone Bianchi cover.

Not really GOOD, but interesting!!

The poses seem off, the claws seem too big, but it at least stands out from other covers!
___________________________________________________

Is this a NEW drawing by John Romita, Jr.?

If so, then WOW!!

If he really drew this in his OLD style, that's impressive as all heck.

If it is just an old drawing he did, never mind.
___________________________________________________

I like how sharp Beast's ear looks on this David Finch cover.

And if this is not a cover detail, how funny is it to have Wolverine JUST off panel?
___________________________________________________

NO WAY! Ultimate Sinister is back!!

Awesome!!

He is my favorite character ever!!

That artist is Larocca? Really - seems like an odd cover for him.
___________________________________________________

I don't think I want to know what source Greg Land used for that Invisible Woman drawing...

___________________________________________________

Clever idea, and, of course, nice execution of the idea by the great Stuart Immonen.

___________________________________________________

I like the intensity and the dynamism of this Madureira cover.

___________________________________________________

It took them long enough to do an Ultimate War Machine!!!

Where's my Ultimate Deathcry?!!?

Get Robert Kirkman on it immediately!!

It IS a neat cover by Ferry, by the by.
___________________________________________________

Something seems to be a bit off on this Cary Nord cover.

Maybe some of the Hulk's mass should be mushed a bit?
___________________________________________________

What an AMAZING job Marko Djurdjevic did on Sue Storm on this cover. That's just brilliant.

But his Thing is a bit...off.

Still, that Sue drawing is wonderful - to be life-like, while still maintaining dynamic character work with her face? Awesome.
___________________________________________________

Chris Weston Kaare Andrews also does a nice job with facial expression on this cover.

And it transforms what would be a totally boring cover into quite an interesting one.
___________________________________________________

Pretty cool Tony Harris cover for this "Before the Bite" storyline.

___________________________________________________

Good cover by Shawn Moll.

Definitely stands out.
___________________________________________________

Nothing much to say about Olivetti's cover here.

I don't like it, really, but it isn't awful, either.
___________________________________________________

Very nice Bradstreet cover.

All I ask from him is to mix things up a bit each month, and he did so.

Not even a LOT, just like, have the Punisher point a gun rather than be standing there listlessly.
___________________________________________________

I love the old school cover layout Gulacy is using for this Penance cover.

Good stuff.
___________________________________________________

What is Echo doing on this New Avengers Annual?

Is that actually accurate? Is that a good starting pose for martial arts or something?

Otherwise, neat Cheung cover.
___________________________________________________

A strong David Finch cover.

When he gets more fluid with his artwork, it really works a lot better.
___________________________________________________

Very nice Nic Klein cover.

He and Djurdjevic really nail that "odd perspectives" approach well.
___________________________________________________

HONORABLE MENTIONS!!
___________________________________________________

Very nice Jimmy Cheung cover.

He credits Byrne, though. When did Byrne do this same type of cover? During his run with Roger Stern?
___________________________________________________

Very nice Adi Granov Nova cover.

I like it when Granov mixes things up nicely.
___________________________________________________

I love how eerie this Patrick Scherberger Francis Tsai cover is.

___________________________________________________

I'll admit - I'm a bit biased towards cool Tommy Lee Edwards artwork.

There's probably not THAT much to this cover, but boy, do I like me some Edwards art.
___________________________________________________

I loves me some Gerald Parel, too.

This is, what, the cover to Iron Man #1? I know this image looks familiar...
___________________________________________________

Another strong Skottie Young cover for Deadpool.

___________________________________________________

Salvador Larocca manages to pull off something that is quite difficult - make the movie-style Spider-Man outfit look cool in a drawing.

Nicely done.
___________________________________________________

This Eric Canete cover JUST missed for me.

Still, he's designed the heck out of these Mandarin covers.
___________________________________________________

TOP FIVE!!
___________________________________________________

5. Tan Eng Huat's art in this Surfer mini-series has been excellent - so much so that I was all, "Why not just let HIM draw the darn cover?!?"

But then I saw Paul Pope's cover...

Never mind!!
___________________________________________________

4. Marko Djurdjevic's odd perspectives really light up his covers.

This Thunderbolts cover is a good example of this effect.
___________________________________________________

3. Djurdjevic is back again with this smartly designed Daredevil cover.

Clever covers are neat.
___________________________________________________

2. Brilliant Breitweiser cover.

Get this man on a prominent book, Marvel!!!
___________________________________________________

1. Practically a note perfect cover from Farel Dalrymple and Paul Hornschemeier.

The amount of story they manage to plug into this cover without making it incoherent is stunning.

Well, that's it for me this month! Feel free to share YOUR prejudices (and your Top Fives)!

I'm pretty sure the cover for The Twelve #1 is actually Kaare Andrews. Also, surprised you didn't mention The Zombie cover as a fairly clear homage to the poster for the original Texas Chainsaw massacre.

For some reason that Thunderbolts cover should have the caption "The last thing a Domino's pizza ever sees"

The Exiles cover would be better if Marvel didn't already spoil the roster with the new "Bullpen Bulletins" or whatever it is their putting in the back pages now. But hey, what are you going to do? By their very nature cover previews are spoilers.

the drawing of Ms. Marvel is one of the worst ones I’ve seen by Horn yet.

Somewhere, Daryl Hannah is crying.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not into the Omega covers. Don't do anything for me at all.

That Epting Cap cover looks like nothing so much as an "homage" to The Rocketeer.

One thing I can say about all of these, though, is that they all fail the test of making me want to pick up the comics and buy them. Not a single image here grabs me, so it's another month without Marvels for yours truly.

I don't know ... Am I the only one that doesn't like Paul Pope? I understand his grasp on the craft but I just think his style looks messy and bored.

I love how eerie this Patrick Scherberger cover is.

Are you SURE that's Sherbereger? That does not look like his style AT ALL.

Give me the "America, Fuck Yeah!" cover of Captain America. Cap could use some positive energy in his title.

Are you SURE that’s Sherbereger? That does not look like his style AT ALL.

Agreed. That was the credit, and I thought he was just trying out a new style - but you're right, it is Francis Tsai. Thanks!

Decent Captain America covers, but I don't like that new outfit. As a friend of mine who's Hispanic pointed out- why is Captain America wearing the Puerto Rican flag on his chest?

Just in case you don't know...

That She-Hulk cover is an homage to an old 1980's house-ad for the HULK's book.

The Captain America costume is designed in such a way as to have his ORIGINAL triangular shield design on his chest.

That cover with Hulk and Silver Surfer?

They're coming straight down at you. Look out!

That cover with Hulk and Silver Surfer?

They’re coming straight down at you. Look out!

Aha!

You appear to be right, Dan!

Thanks!

Something strange about the Suydam Iron man zombie cover. The armor pieces actually have a decomposing zombie body inside them already, including the torso. So what is the arm lifting the attached to then?

Man, what a bunch of dark, cluttered, messy, ugly covers!

The Omega cover is pretty incoherent if you haven't been reading it: plus, it just isn't very interesting.

I'm betting Wolverine is on the cover to X-Factor. It looks like they're doing a quadtych thing with the X-Men covers for January.

Did Reggie Hudlin come up with Tom Foster?

Maybe, maybe not. He first appeared in Hudlin's Black Panther #23, and it was widely suspected that he was being set up as Bill's replacement, but he was just an unnamed nephew in that issue. He didn't get the name "Tom Foster" until Incredible Hulk #107, six months later, and I don't think he ever appeared in BP in the interim.

So it could be that Hudlin came up with the character, failed to name him or ever use him again, and then let Pak and McDuffie take over the guy. Or it could be that somebody else came up with the idea of Tom, and Hudlin was given the job of working him into a script.

Ugh! I'm sorry, but that Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #35 cover is hideous. It looks like Venom possessed the Blob, or maybe like Spider-Man is getting attacked by a really ugly Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon.

Cap/Chosen: Invisible Woman looks horrible. She's way too pointy.

Black Panther: Isn't that "Thundercats" symbol great! Totally appropriate for the title character.

Warbound 2: Thor met Korg waaaaay back in (I think) JIM83.

New X-Men 46: Wow. Psychic armor. Is it me, or are powers getting less & less original. I know we've been going at it for 70 years, but still...

MA S-M 35: Venom is getting more hulk-like with every passing year. Not so good.

Clabe & Deadpool 49: It has a distinct Frazetta feel to it. I like it a lot. Then again, I'm fretty biased towards Frazetta, so I can really get into an artist that digs him too.

Uncanny X-MEn 494: Funniest Brian's comment:
"I like how sharp Beast’s ear looks on this David Finch cover"

Ms. Marvel 23: people reflected in a monster’s eyes aren't supposed to look deformed ?!!
The same for Avengers: Initiative 9 & Taskmaster shield.

The Twelve 1: nice job with facial expression on this cover, yeah you clearly understand that Electro is doing it loud & that the other characters stopped breathing ;)

Joshua Strasburg: I don't like Pope's style too.

Marvel, please stop rendering Spider-Man with a gigantic head! PLEEEEEEEEASE !!

Failing to see what's wrong with Daryl Hannah in the Ms. Marvel cover.

I don't LIKE the cover...I think it's awful...but I don't see what's wrong with her.

But, assuming you're right and there's something weird about it I'm not picking up, isn't it funny how Horn and Land are now messing up even tracing?!

"Uhmm…Francis Tsai?

Did you mean for it to look like Psylocke was stoned on the cover?"

Haha, no! Also, regarding who was on the cover - in this case I was given a specific list of people to include.

C'mon Brian. That Paul Pope Silver Surfer is hideous! The only thing its got going for it is Kirby Krackle.

Haha, no! Also, regarding who was on the cover - in this case I was given a specific list of people to include.

Oh yeah, Francis, looking at my comment, it looked like I was "blaming" you for the characters on the cover.

That was definitely not my intention, as clearly, that was an editorial decision, not yours.

Sorry for being unclear.

C’mon Brian. That Paul Pope Silver Surfer is hideous! The only thing its got going for it is Kirby Krackle.

Nope. It's also really cool-looking.

See how this goes?

The Exiles cover would be better if Marvel didn’t already spoil the roster with the new “Bullpen Bulletins” or whatever it is their putting in the back pages now. But hey, what are you going to do? By their very nature cover previews are spoilers.

To be fair, Adam, when these covers were originally solicited, the roster had not yet been spoiled.

That She-Hulk cover is an homage to an old 1980’s house-ad for the HULK’s book.

I didn't know when I first saw it, but your comment has jogged my memory! :)

That is a pretty obscure homage there!

Maybe, maybe not. He first appeared in Hudlin’s Black Panther #23, and it was widely suspected that he was being set up as Bill’s replacement, but he was just an unnamed nephew in that issue. He didn’t get the name “Tom Foster” until Incredible Hulk #107, six months later, and I don’t think he ever appeared in BP in the interim.

So it could be that Hudlin came up with the character, failed to name him or ever use him again, and then let Pak and McDuffie take over the guy. Or it could be that somebody else came up with the idea of Tom, and Hudlin was given the job of working him into a script.

It seemed like Hudlin to me, but I am curious if anyone else knows for sure.

Ugh! I’m sorry, but that Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #35 cover is hideous. It looks like Venom possessed the Blob, or maybe like Spider-Man is getting attacked by a really ugly Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon.

I like Venom as a big ol' monster-looking dude! :)

Warbound 2: Thor met Korg waaaaay back in (I think) JIM83.

Right, that's why I was wondering when he'll meet Thor to get his revenge.

It'd be pretty weird otherwise to wonder when Korg would meet Thor, no? :)

Failing to see what’s wrong with Daryl Hannah in the Ms. Marvel cover.

I don't like the way Horn uses models for Marvel, but here, he's not even using the SAME model as previous issues, so it looks worse than normal.

And I still think the Pope Surfer looks super sweet.

My top five (FWIW)

Not a great month for covers, in my opinion, but one artist was at the top of his game...

5 Exiles Then and Now - very peculiar groupshot, almost bland but strangely intriguing, nonetheless (especially stoned Psyclocke :) )

4 Foolkiller 4 - the sheer oddity of the situation sells it to me

3 Th'underbolts 119 - weird maltese cross thing going on but Djurdevic does the T'bolts so well.

2 Ultimate X-Men 90 - nice colours, nice angle, very cool.

1 Black Panther 34 - Brilliant! Storm as Cleopatra Jones - that's just flippin' genius!

Yes, well done, Salvador Larocca, the rest of the artists were caught napping!
