Help me buy my comics this week!
- by Greg Burgas
- in General
It's a pretty big week, as the third week often is. But it's even bigger, as three new series debut and some books that rarely come out arrive. It's a Thanksgiving miracle!
Here is the shipping list. My shopping list is below.Â
Grendel: Behold the Devil #1 (Yay! New Grendel stuff!)
Scream #1 (Peter David and Bart Sears. You judge which is the draw.)
Umbrella Academy #3
Zero Killer #3
Catwoman #73
Checkmate #20
Ex Machina #32
The Programme #5
Gødland #20
Hawaiian Dick #1 (I'll love to see if this is going to stick to a monthly schedule.)
Incredible Hulk #111 (I'm going to check out the aftermath a bit to see what happens.)
New X-Men #44 (Part of the crossover. Sigh.)
She-Hulk #23
Left on Mission #5
Lone Ranger #10
Rex Libris #9 (Yay! New Rex Libris!)
The Goon: Chinatown and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker HC (I'm not a huge fan of the Goon, but this looked neat.)
Peruse the list and tell me what I should be buying. I'm sure many people are going to recommend Groo or The Spirit, both of which I'm on the fence about. Perhaps if the call is overwhelming I'll check them out. So hit me with your choices!

Okay. You're already considering Groo and the Spirit, and you got Action last week and it didn't do it for you. Of the comics I'm getting, that leaves only Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century #8, which seems to promise a date between Bouncing Boy and Triplicate Girl. The cover certainly looks cheerful enough. And, don't forget: a little cheaper than the rest of the comics on the stand.

I'm surprised, no amazed to realise that Captain America 32 isn't on your list. Even if you trade wait for it it is surely good enough to buy floppies as well?

The only book I'm picking up that's not on your list is The Boys #12, and if you're not picking it up now, it's almost certainly because it's just not your cup of tea.

If you are waiting for the trade on Captain America, there is a trade shipping. Get it!

Why not pick up Hellblazer #238? Diggle's been off to a decent start, and Danijel Zezelj's work on Desolation Jones has been pretty impressive so far, so it'll be interesting to see how he handles this one.

Definitely Captain America #32.
Other than that, curious about Angel: After the Fall.

T-bolts: Breaking Point.
It's Gage writing Moonstone and Songbird. What can go wrong?
And you'll want to stick with Incredible Hulk, I think.
The idea of a Hercules/Cho buddy book, where they're on the run because of Mighty Avenger Ares and trying to destroy SHIELD written by Pak and FVL...
if that doesn't sound great, then I don't know what does.
And really, no booing a crossover that's got Brubaker, Carey, PAD, and Kyle/Yost writing it
That's probably the best line up on a crossover even close to this size that I've ever seen.

interesting stories with less well known characters. I believe thios issue is the endo f a story arc, but I think you might be able to follow it anyways.

Kurt Busiek's back on Conan #46. I wandered away from the title during Tim Truman's run, but I swooped back in when I saw Busiek was back last issue. It's the last part of a 4 part story that started way back in some issue I never read--but don't let that turn you off immediately. I picked up part 3 and followed right along. Conan is interesting in that I know the mythos well enough to follow along after being dropped in the middle of a story. However, the story needs to be written in such a way that I'm invested enough to be interested. Since I know how a Conan story goes, I can dismiss a marginal story because I know all the beats that will be hit. Busiek is great at mixing the familiar and the novel to create compelling stories. He does it in Astro City, and he does it with Conan. This is his last effort on Conan for the foreseeable future; it would be well worth appreciating his craft one last time.

A Spirit Archives and a Fourth World Omnibus in the same week. *Sigh*. Oh well, I'll just have to go without food for a while ...

Yeah Greg, it's the book Marvel wants everyone talking about, why the heck wouldn't you get it?

Since you've already tried The Spirit, might I recommend something a little more lighthearted in Simpsons Comics #136.
Its better than the TV show and without all the forced guest voices.

Invincible!
Or maybe Walking Dead.
Something Kirkman-flavored.

"It’s Gage writing Moonstone and Songbird. What can go wrong?"
Hmmm, well Songbird might turn into a literal songbird. But other than that...?

Oh sweet Heaven, new Rex Libris! It is about time.
You have all my books already, so I don't really have a suggestion for you, so I agree with DubipR, vote Simpsons.

No love for the Umbrella Academy? It's brilliant--sort of what might happen if Edward Gorey or Charles Addams wrote a superhero comic.

Umbrella Academy is already on his pull list. And I think he said he reads Invincible through the trades.
I've got nothing to add. Cooke's run on Spirit is almost over (and honestly I rather he work on other stuff. Not that the Spirit is bad but Cooke should be doing his own thing). I might pick up some of those Batman crossover books but the prelude by Morrison didn't excite me. There's Angel: After the Fall which follows up the last season of Angel (ala the new Buffy series). But I'm not expecting that to be as good.
How about Sonic the Hedgehog #182? Seriously 182 issues of Sonic the Hedgehog. Someone has to be reading it.

Sonic? Yeah, somebody's reading it, but a large portion of them also draw furry erotica on DeviantArt.
(Actually from what I've heard from a few people, at some point in the past few years, the writing began resembling a deranged furry's attempt to ape Grant Morrison, so that might be worth reading if only for the laughs.)

Dan (other dan): Actually, the Conan story you're referring to is the last of a 6 part flashback story.
Dark horse will probably collect all in a tpb one day.

Wait?
The Iron Man Annual comes out?
That for the win. The interviews with Gage have made it sound really fun.

Don't sigh!
New X-Men is the best of the X books!

It's also the one not solicited for Feb and the one that I think it least likely for Alonso to keep, judging from past patterns.
Alternatively, the kids might get moved to Bru's Uncanny or Carey's X-Men: Legacy but who knows.

I second the Conan. Gotta have the Goon HC as well.
