I have a small press RPG on the market (not a mini-comic, but similiar marketplace) and wish that there was a way to politely share this information with the local gaming shoppes.

One of them wouldn't give up any of the shelf space they currently have devoted to 58 (I counted) D&D Third Ed PHBs, which were literally dominating one of their five display shelves. They said that they "didn't have room" to display anything that wasn't either WotC D&D or White Wolf. It didn't matter that we were D20. And, it certainly didn't matter that we were current, while the lion's share of their display area was pushing material that is 5 years out of date.

In comic book terms, this would have been similiar to walking into a comic store and seeing 5 rows of No Man's Land or Our Worlds at War displayed as if new, and being told that newer books would be brought in only once these had sold out.

Another said that he was willing to display the books in the store, and "if" he sold any he would then talk about how much we would owe him. Upon further questioning, he admitted that he wanted to keep 100% of the sale, plus charge us for carrying the book.

The third offered us an 80/20 deal. They would carry our books and keep 80%, giving us 20%. We took it, but I knew we were getting ripped off. When I was a manager of a comic book store we had an RPG section. And, like you said, the usual deal was 50/50.

Man, I sure could've used this when I was shopping my first comic around a few years back, rather than muddling through on my own. Still, I sold out of the entire run, and it only took 18 months...

Kevin Huizenga, consider yourself very very lucky to have a publishing deal with Drawn & Quarterly. Otherwise you'd NEVER get away with calling your book "Or Else", Mr. Attitude!

So can I buy this at your store?
