Greg,

I am a fellow comic reader going through recovery and I found your story rather inspirational.

I am in the begining of my recovery, I kicked hard drugs a few years ago (but they kept raising their ugly head every now and again) and now I am trying to live sober. I first started going to recovery in May after a DUI and stayed sober for a few weeks. Then got right back into pot (which was okay since I wasn't drinking or doing hard shit, in my mind) but that led me right to drinking and fighting (I have an Irish-man's temper) and hard drugs.

Deep depression set in as I felt shame. I was so weak. I couldn't go back to my home group because I was so embarrassed, I messed up. I was weak. Eventually, my fiance made me go (thank the lord), but I was still depressed. Then one night, I drank again and smoked pot. I just couldn't fucking deal with it. I didn't know what to do. I was a shit throwing, snot flying mess when I walked in the next day, but something had changed. I gave up and this seemed to work for me. Just do what people say and start listening; amazing how that works.

Since I got sober, I have been going crazy. CRAZY!!! Happy, sad, depressed, shameful angry and lonely, but I am getting better. One of the things that helped me get through this time is comics. Lots of comics. It helped me escape, to enjoy life again. I tracked the down demon in the bottle run of Michelline's Iron Man and have been enjoying it immensely.

So, I don't know what my point is, I am rambling a bit. I just wanted to let you know that this blog entry was so meaningful to me personally and I read it with a tear. Thanks for writing it, it means a lot to me.

The mid-to-late eighties--they blew the doors off my mind. If 1985-1988 hadn't happened, I might never have stayed with comics.

Alec, Abby, Anton, and Matt. Vanth, Oedi, Willow, and Syz. Christine, Brian, and Eppy...and Kevin, Edsel, and Mirth. Kilowog, Ch'p, and Katma. Beetle, Booster, and Guy. Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Casey Jones. Enchantress, Executioner, and Beta Ray Bill. Concrete, Bob the Alien, Homicide, and Mr. Monster. Reid Fleming, Flaming Carrot, Mr. Spook. Jaka Tavers and Lord Julius. Horatio and Judah, Norbert and Ham. Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, the Soft Master. PFC Ed Marks. Matt, Karen, Elektra, Stick...and Wilson Fisk. Luther, Rose, Octobriana. Evey, Finch, and the man in room V. Buddy, Studs, and Junior. Peter, MJ, Kraven, and Vermin. And The Jam!

Amazing Heroes. Comics Scene. Read Yourself RAW. Weirdo. Epic. Heavy Metal.

Oh, and those covers...
Bill Sienkewicz. Brian Bolland. Art Adams. John Bolton. Mike Golden. Frank Miller. The Dude. I could go on...

Hey Greg. I'm an ex-reader of With (I've graduated to Canadian Mennonite and Geez now,) who was reading this blog before I realized you wrote for both. Is there an e-mail I could send some questions to? I'm a pretty hardcore Anabaptist who's also a pretty hardcore comic book geek, and I wanted to ask some questions relating to that, but I can't find a less public way than this to ask them... Way too many Greg Hatcher's pop up when I google the name, and the only Greg Hatcher link I *know* refers to you has no way of getting in touch... Heck, even Withonline.com is failing me.

Thank you for your honesty, sir. I have been at rock bottom as well; it's good to hear from another survivor.

Respect and honor for your wise decisions.

But no Rocket Raccoon on the list, the 1983 breakout performance from none other than Mike Mignola hisself? Come now.

Right. And Cerebus was going strong, too. I also got back into comics that year.

But no mention of the 1986 Pozner / Hamilton Aquaman mini? Really now!

I did a whole column about Aquaman and mentioned that specific mini-series as my favorite version ever. I was trying to concentrate on stuff I hadn't mentioned here that often.

But yeah, I left a lot out. There was the Aquaman mini-series, there was Elektra: Assassin, there was Barr and Davis on Detective, there was the original MAZE Agency, there was even Star Brand and D.P. 7. It was just a magnificent couple of years for superhero and adventure comics. I don't think the level's ever been that high all the way across the industry again since the way it was in the mid-80's.

I had my rock bottom moment back in 2002, and it was comics that kept me going afterwards as well. It's interesting that one of the main series that I was putting my energy into was Ms Tree. I'd discovered it around that time and was able to get most of the issues.

Looking back, it's been comics that I turn to every time something traumatic has happened in my life.

I missed the '80's as well. It was mainly the '80's that revolutionized the comics industry.

Crisis on Infinite Earth did away with multiple earths and useless characters.

Writers like Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman paved the way for comics written for Mature Audience.

Jon Sable Freelance, Nexus, Grim Jack are being collected into trades and making a comeback into the 21st century.

Crisis on Infinite Earth did away with multiple earths and useless characters.

Writers like Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman paved the way for comics written for Mature Audience.

i loved DC's revamped Charlton books, too... The Question has become quite legendary, i guess, but nobody ever talks about Captain Atom, which i thought was a really great comic. i loved Blue Beetle, too, though it wasn't really remarkable per se.
