Those were the only ones that I did a Judging Books By Their Covers for each month, so it seemed only fair to stick by those.

Is it only Marvel comics ?

While not meaning to, I ended up being pretty even between DC and Marvel.

DC had a slight edge, though, as I think they have three of the best cover artists in the business working for them (well, in one of the cases, HAD one of the best cover artists in the business working for them).

Not to quibble, as itâ€™s fairly early yet (and that second cover is fantastic), but Iâ€™m curious as to what made those two covers particularly outstanding. I mean, I love Ringoâ€™s work and Simone Bianchiâ€™s fantastic, too, but both of those covers strike me as fairly static and not representative of their best stuff. Theyâ€™re basically pin-ups. This is not to say that theyâ€™re bad, just maybe a trifle dull.

Not too early! If you think a cover does not belong, then feel free to point it out!

Anyhow, the Spider-Man/FF one IS the last one on the list. But I think it is a strong cover, especially as to how it conveys a plot point of the book in a real simple manner, along with a cool drawing.

As for the Wolverine one, I disagree with the standout part. I think it is a good deal different from Bianchi's other Wolverine covers (and almost all his Batman covers).

Some similar Bianchi covers are the Green Lantern cover he did (which I thought was excellent, as well) and I guess those half-face ones he did, but those, I don't think were as striking as this Wolverine one.

And, anecdotally, I have heard random customers in the comic store remark on how much they were struck by the Wolverine cover.

That being said, I would agree that it isn't as good as the covers that follow.

It's funny that two of the first three are esecially portrait covers. Remember when Marvel made a big event out of doing portrait covers in the eighties and DC did the same in the ninties? Now they have become the industry standard.
