Snark Free Corner for 12/3
Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!
Enjoy!
ALL KINDS OF PILLS TO GIVE US ALL KINDS OF THRILLS
This feature is where we examine the first cover appearance of various comic book characters.
This week, it is the Archie gang!!
First off, here is the cover to Archie #1, which conveiniently enough, was the first cover appearance of all FOUR of the main Archie characters!

There is Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica.
The next character to appear on a cover might surprise you…it’s MISS GRUNDY, in early 1946.

Reggie is the next character to make a cover appearance, on this 1946 Pep cover…

Followed quickly by Pop Tate…

Then Mr. Weatherbee…

There was a decent-sized break with no new cover characters (concentrating, instead, on the main characters), until, in fairly short succession….
Professor Flutesnoot…

Mr. Lodge…

and Moose ..

Sabrina, interestingly enough, is the next one to get a cover…

Then there was another decent-sized break, before, quickly…
Dilton…

Big Ethel…

and Midge…

all got covers…
After awhile, Chuck and Nancy were introduced in the 70s…

COVER THEME GAME
As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.
In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.
Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

Find me a cover featuring a girl kissing Jughead!
Here is an example (which you can’t use! )….

Remember, only one cover per commenter!
Good luck!

Ha! I got a cover theme game! (But I’m pretty sure I’m cool point ineligible)

I think Gay Jarrick is quicker if we go by the current stories of Jay in JUSTICE SOCIETY. For a time, I think both of them were limited to the speed of sound.
For a while Jay was having up and down issues with being old and kinda/sorta/but not really part of the Speed Force.
And Quicksilver used spent all his energy being a bitch about some ATM issue…

My first cover theme game! Though, only because I’m up so early, I think.
Oranges, my man. Oranges.

Quicksilver vs Jay Garrick – Which universe, DC or Marvel?
Since there’s no speed force in the Marvel U, I would say Quicksilver due to the age difference. But in the DC u, I would give it to Jay based on experience.

pretty sure Quicksilver was only limited to @ 180 mph according to the Marvel Universe handbook…

I’m not intimately familiar with Garrick, but DC’s speedsters have always been faster than Marvel’s. Unless we’re talking about Ultimate Quicksilver.

I just had this bizarre image of Marvel doing an Amalgam with Archie Comics…
Just so we can see Big Moose as part of the Enforcers, and Juggernaut Jones as the unstoppable villain…

This is the first cover game I could actually get, but someone beat me to it.
Oranges. Yay.

Marvel did do a crossover with Archie… Using the Punisher.

Jay’s faster, but they both have their strengths. Pietro is more . . . well, more snotty anyway.

I literally don’t even get why half of those Archie covers are supposed to be funny. Being a witch compels you to buy everything you see on television? What? And what the hell is Archie doing to Veronica on that Weatherbee cover? It looks painful.

Before this blog, I never knew anyone actually read Archie comics or cared about them. I’m always bemused whenever posts on Archie comics surface. I don’t know why I’m sharing that (probably because I will never, ever, EVER get one of the Snark Free games, no matter how easy, without using the internet).

Apodaca and SuperActionGO!: I’m not getting the orange connection in the third cover, other than the color of the logo. Can you splain it to me? Unless the badly drawn guy is holding a whole bag of oranges in his hand, and we can’t see them because his hand is easily wider than his head.
Oops, that was a little snarky. Sorry.

Note the rules for Cover Theme Game.
It’s never something you could answer without some knowledge other than merely what’s on the covers themselves.
I just tossed in all the orange stuff because the two X-Force covers both had oranges, so I looked for an Archie cover that also had one, because it amused me.

The subject of “Who Is It?” sounds an awful lot like Rex Lindsey.

I always thought Veronica was a later edition to the Archie Mythos. Still damn early but not there at the beginning. Guess I was wrong.

Veronica was not an original cast member, no.
Only Archie, Betty and Jughead were.
The trio debuted in Pep Comics #22 (about half a year before Archie Comics #1 came out), and Veronica made her introduction in Pep Comics #26.
Oddly enough, while popular enough to get his own spin-off, Archie did not show up on the covers of Pep until he already appeared on the cover of his own spin-off magazine.

Kane said …
“And Quicksilver used spent all his energy being a bitch about some ATM issue…”
Because there is no real context there to help my comprehension, I’m not sure if you mean Automated Teller Machine or Ass-to-Mouth. Which did “Quicksilver spend all his energy being a bitch about?”
