I actually like Gary Frank’s more-rendered stuff better than his old style. It’s unusual for me, since I usually recoil at more-rendered stuff, but I don’t think his is excessive. There’s something about it that gives a visceral tone to the characters, as opposed to the flatness that the Image-style rendering usually causes.

I got that homage to the All-Star Squadron/JSA/JLA crossover, too. This is my favorit Ross cover since the Marvel Family battle in Justice.

Thank you! That’s been bugging me too. Frank’s characters all have bulging eyes and grimaced smiles and all looked like they just SNAPPED. It’s detracted from my enjoyment of his first couple Action issues…

Holy cow, Robin’s legs are HUGE in that Jim Lee cover.

Love the Alex Ross JSA cover. It takes me back to the 5 part JLA/JSA/All-Star Squadron crossover I read when I was 11.

The Metal Man cover fails for me, because the number they’re forming isn’t clear. If Rouleau hadn’t stuck a robot/spaceship/whatever that thing is in the middle of the negative space, the number shape might have read better.

There are some nice looking covers this month. I was kind of worried when I didn’t see the new Justice League Unlimited, but pleased it got an honorable mention. I really like that book and am worried it’s going to get axed for Superfriends, or whatever that new thing is.

Quick picky fanboy question: The Amazon.com version of that first cover for “Superman: The Man of Steel – Volume 6″ has Lori Lemaris (is it Lori?) as solid green, with blue-green hair. Anybody know for sure if she’ll be flesh-toned in the final version, or if that’s just Amazon worrying that she looks too revealing?

Since you asked, I think Calafioreâ€™s the worst artist currently working at the big two. His art always looks â€œunnatural,â€ incredibly stiff with odd proportions and bizarrely squared-off heads.

I totally agree, although I think Phil Hester gives him a serious run for his money in that department. Calafiore’s ability to get high profile work consistently boggles my mind, especially since all his heroes’ costumes look like they’re filled with broken glass instead of flesh and blood.

I’d actually place that fine Legion of Superheroes cover by Alexander Serra in the Top Five. It’s intriguing (what’s with that huge smashed up statue of Martian Manhunter?!), and beyond that, really well-laid-out & -drawn. Each of the Legionnaires has his own body type and body language too. Very sweet.

As for some of those other Legionnaires: Count me among the people who can’t figure out the issue with Gary Frank’s Action art. I am really enjoying. Obviously his style’s evolved, and obviously you don’t like the grittier look. But it works for me; I really enjoy it.
