Help me buy my comics this week!
- by Greg Burgas
- in General
And lo, the wheel comes around again. So let's look at some festive comics!
The shipping list, as you may know, is here. Below, behold my shopping list:
Grendel: Behold the Devil #2
Rex Mundi #9
The Scream #2
The Umbrella Academy #4
Catwoman #74
Checkmate #21
Ex Machina #33
The Programme #6
The Circle #2
Special Forces #2
Iron Fist #11
Incredible Hulk #112
New X-Men #45
She-Hulk #24
The Order #6
The Long Count #1
Robotika: For a Few Rubles More #1
Some New Kind of Slaughter #1
Batman Vampire TPB
Munden's Bar TPB
The Sleepy Truth GN
Man, that's a lot of comics. December is always a big month, but these are just regular books - I'm not buying anything holiday-related! Anyway, give me your choices in the comments. It's always fun to check out reader-recommended books!
[Edit: A. David Lewis was insistent that his new book, Some New Kind of Slaughter, was coming out this week, so I went back and checked. Diamond has two different lists, and the Archaia books weren't on the one I linked to. So I added them, because I know I'm getting them all. Thanks to the enthusiastic Mr. Lewis for pointing it out!]

I am definitely getting....
Avengers Classic #7
Captain American: The Chosen #5
Marvel Adventures: Avengers #19
Mighty Avengers #6
I don't know why, but a lot of Avengers-related books seem to come out the same week every month. Then again, Mighty Avengers is sooooooooo late, who knows when it was originally intended to come out?
Anyway, no idea if I'll pick up anything else. I need to take an actual glance at stuff on the shelves before I'll purchase it. I saw a Doctor Who Classics listed, but if it reprints stuff that's already gotten the reprint treatment that I have (I think "The Iron Legion" story arc has been reprinted at least five times in various places) then i'll skip on it.

Birds of Prey 113 is Sean McKeever's first issue (not to say that Bedard hasn't done an AWESOME, AWESOME job with the fill ins).
Any reason why you wouldn't try it?

You're getting way more books than I am. (Go Greg!) The only thing I'm getting that you're not is Birds of Prey.

I'm picking up Mighty Avengers 6. What frightens me is that Tony Stark is going to step out undamaged from inside "Cheesecake Ultron", after Sentry practically smashed her into puddle of goo.
Umbrella Academy should good, too.

This week I'm getting: Grendel, Birds of prey, Checkmate, Countdown, Detective, Programme, Superman, Special Forces, Iron Fist, Marvel holiday Special, New X Men, and The Order. I might get What if, just for the Priest and Brubaker story.
Get Birds of Prey or The Marvel Holiday Special

Action Philosophers vol 3 Giant Size Thing is coming out. If, like me, you've not been able to get all the single issues, this is the way to go. Fun for all!

There's Ex Machina # 33 and Hellblazer tpb: Bloodlines (I believe it may be the last few issues not reprinted of Garth Ennis' run on that title).

Tom - it's not all of the uncollected Ennis stories. It has, in fact, been quite difficult to figure out exactly which uncollected Ennis stories it will have; the original announcement would have left just one two-issue Ennis story uncollected (plus there's one more in 'Rare Cuts'). But subsequent announcements have had less and less stories listed. At this point, it looks like it's just 'Royal Blood' (the four part Jack the Ripper story) and the three part story about the female demon who gives birth to an angel's scion, which people often claim as the origin of Preacher, despite Ennis's denial.
So I've been curious as to what, exactly, will wind up in that trade. Maybe they're counting on having just enough stories to get one more Ennis trade? [Either way, i have the issues, and will just sell them off as I get the trades.]

Avengers Classic #7
Again, for the art. Art Adams, King Kirby and Mike Avon Oeming make the pretty pictures.

I'd go with Birds of Prey too. Seems like a lot of people are suggesting that though. So hmmm an additional suggestion would be Madame Mirage #4. I've been enjoying it thus far and the last issue was the best one yet.

Tom: I don't see Ex Machina on the list. If it shows up, I will buy it. I also have the Hellblazer issues that are collected (I know there's confusion over what's collected, but I'm fairly confident I own all the Ennis issues).
Other Dan - I would certainly recommend the Action Philosophers! trade. I already have the issues, though.

Add Birds of Prey and you should be good. I am glad to see that you are on the Umbrella Academy's Roller Coaster of love!
You might want to add: Justice League of America #16 and Shadowpact #20 (the art has been great).

Some New Kind of Slaughter is NOT on the list, sir. I have pre-ordered it, so if it comes out, I will get it, but it's not there. Is it coming out or not?

Hey Sean,
Have you noticed that Vertigo has yet to reprint the remainder of Jamie Delano's Hellblazer run (23-25 issues) and none of Phil Jenkins' run?
That's not including the 1-2 issues stories by various, and 4-parter by Eddie Campbell.

This week, I'm not going to (tediously and predictably) recommend you pick up the two issues of 2000AD shipping this week, which finish off the current storylines. Instead, why not try out the new downloadable version of the next issue? Quite a corker it is too: the traditional, 100 page end of year special with all new stories.
Can't quite figure out if the first one's free or not but you can get it from here from Wednesday.

I was going to say the Munden's Bar trade, but I see you have that listed already, so I'm going to say that Birds Of Prey is your best bet too.

Since you didn't review or pick up my Simpsons recommendation last month, I'll recommend it again.
